You have to put the round plate. In the slits in the middle of the wind shield. For the fire tabs to work and cook right.

Do not believe everything you see on the internet. Example number 1,695,789,987,765! Product was used incorrectly and hopefully everyone is intelligent enough to do their own research. I abstain from making negative comments, because doing so is on par with this review. I strongly feel you should use the the product correctly before you talk poop. I know the internet is just for fun and I'm showing my ass right now, but come on man!

You had the tablets in the wrong place the disc that the tablet sits on goes in the slots part way up the side so it is closer to the pot and boil quicker try that
@fathergoose4784

It looks like the circular tablet plate is almost supposed to be inserted into the slots that are in the center of all 3 sides?? If so, that would bring the flame closer and possibly warm up the liquid quicker....

That's what it's for... These stoves often don't come with directions but obviously they should Also there are a lot of stoves that assemble with tabs but it's WAY WAY WAY better to get one with hinges. I wouldn't have noticed the different construction but someone pointed it out to me. Lixada has highly reviewed cheaper ones with hinges on Amazon ($15-25 without or with alcohol burner) or AliExpress ($8-15 w/o or w burner)

For tablet use, the holding base should be placed on the slots in middle of wind shield panel so that flame is closer to the pot. Thanks for honest review.

You said you were using 91% alcohol. I take that to mean isopropyl alcohol. Methanol (denatured alcohol) and yellow bottle HEET work better in that style burner.

I read somewhere that high proof Everclear with a little water added (I don't know the ratio) works well and burns very clean. Of course, this raises the cost and the higher proof (190, I think) stuff isn't available everywhere, so it isn't very practical, but I thought it was interesting.

@bobinmontana777
@bobinmontana777 5 лет назад
Aaron, try the evernew pot/titanium alcohol stove combo. More expensive, but very nice and light. The stove can accommodate the alcohol stove, esbit tablets, or burn wood. The stove performs like a gas burner with it's jets, not a yellow, sooty flame like your esbit. As a side note, I also recently tried a esbit titanium folding stand. Using a expedition research tablet and a Toaks titanium windscreen it boiled a cup of water in under 8 minutes. It was 40 degrees and windy at the time.

Great review as always. 👍🏻👍🏻 A friend gave me that alcohol stove a while back because he likes that type of cooking method. I used it with another type of system (an Emberlit, not sure which one). I bought the Ultralight Pot Stand for the alcohol burner simply because of its size. It fit into the pouch with my mess kit. The size made it affordable to me. And, of course, the fact that the stove was free 😉 When I’m in the wilds, I prefer systems that don’t have finite resources (gas, alcohol, tablets, etc). I’d rather use wood burning cooking systems. But it’s always nice to have something easy and fast available too.

Definitely the round tray needs to be snapped in where you lip in the alcohol stove. I have both the Esbit pocket folder and the flat triangular screen/stove you tested. With fuel tabs expect a light boil rather than rolling boil. Tabs get me scalding hot water in about 5-8 minutes. I don't need a rolling boil with any fuel normally except in dead of winter perhaps. I do like the screen/ stove to hold my Trangia but also wondered why stamped steel was over $10. Both stoves can be twig, or tea light, stoves in a pinch especially the thicker folder.

I bought an Esbit Alcohol Burner when they first came out -- thinking they were made in Germany. I was disappointed. They were Chinese. The main difference with Trangia is that instead of uniformly- sized holes on the rim, the Esbit has smaller and larger holes. I guess that's enough of a design difference for not getting sued for copyright infringement. IDK. Esbit's only improvement was adding a flip-over wire handle to the Simmer Ring. About a year later, I found a pair of Chinese knock-offs of the Esbit -- down to the 6 dashed lines on the bottom -- on Amazon or eBay at 2/$10. I bought a couple. Gave one away, the other has the gauze from the wick sticking out from inside the bottom, but it works. My next buy was a Trangia 25 w/ real Trangia burner. Trangias are better and still made in Sweden. I have 2 Trangia civilian-sized burners, 2 M-40 Swedish Army burners [bigger] -- one's a Trangia and one from Svea, the Esbit burner and the Chinese knock-off. OBTW, You would have had better luck with the Esbit hexamine tab if you'd put the support disc in the slits and had the fire at its intended height below the pot.

For people used to buying mass produced equipment made by people in a third world country, paying for things made by cottage industries in a first world country can seem prohibitively expensive. I'd suggest trying to make the stove yourself and I think you'll quickly realise that $25 is a small miracle, and you'd probably stop complaining so much.

Agree too much for the stove. The best Esbit kit is the 5 pc. trail kit. Two cups for heating, cube plate,alcohol burner and stand. For the same $50. or so a much better deal. Plus the kit works together to be very efficient and will decrease your heating times.. No need for additional wind screen. Stable, too. I also use a 6 in. alum. pie dish as a double boiler over a heating pot so as my water boils it also heats my beans or whatever. This will become your new favorite Esbit equipment. Very lightweight as a kit w/2 pots and bag. I never carry alcohol in the burner. Instead, two esbit cubes fit nicely inside. Also, use Heet in the yellow bottle instead of 91 %. More efficient, The bottles can be refilled and are bomb proof. Long neck makes them perfect for filling the stove and unbreakable/no leaking ever. For the addition space needed compared to the 3 pc set...well worth it.
@jameswoodard4304
@jameswoodard4304 5 лет назад
My only problem with the alcohol burners is how inefficient they are. The amount of alcohol it takes to boil water (especially in the mountains) means it is not good for multi-day trips. Also, I'm pretty sure there are some more generic windscreen/stands on the market that are significantly cheaper.

@walkerone9833
@walkerone9833 5 лет назад
Yes, the Esbit 5 pc Trekker set. No need for additional wind screen. Totally different than than the 3 pc he showed. For the $50 he paid the 5 pc has 2 pots (use one as a lid), pot stand, cube plate (sets cube at correct height) and burner. The pots are sized to fit perfectly onto the pot stand. Extremely stable unlike what was shown. I carry 2 cubes in the burner (cubes don't leak). A lot of efficiency in a 4 x 6 inch package with incl. stuff sack. Much more flexible and still very light. If you HAD TO you could even use sticks for a wood fire in the pot stand. Esbit cubes have never been meant to "cook" over...just warm or boil water. Personally, whenever I use cubes i use a aluminum foil wind screen which folded will nest in the kit and have many other uses, too. But as a system this is the best multi heat system out there imo. Always use denatured alcohol or Heet in the yellow bottle. No need then to buy a separate fuel bottle. Alcohol is the best four season heating fuel.

No, it is NOT a great system. The stove is designed so that a pot or cup placed directly on the stove will snuff out the flame. It will not work without a stand. Yes, it is waaaaaaay over priced. Just punch some holes in a cat food can and use folded aluminum foil as a wind block.

@K Silver Unfortunately. Everclear is pretty much illegal to buy over here because the alcohol content is so high. Most people buy "T-Rõd" in Sweden. It's an alcohol mixture that's been dyed red. It also has some additives that'll make you throw up attempt to drink it..
@FuttFel
@FuttFel 5 лет назад
@K Silver Hey I appreciate it! But I'm afraid that's not possible. I live in Sweden. "T-Röd" is fine for its intended purpose, but it would be interesting to find the 190-proof Everclear anyways, if only to have it on the bar shelf as a collectors item since we have nothing like it over here. It would be hilarious at parties, but only in smalllll amounts.

When you use tablets, the pot is too far from the flame (the windscreen/stand is too tall for this}, that's why it takes so long. A standard Esbit solid fuel stove (the folding one) would work much better, as the pot sits lower, closer to the flame.
