The film is set 1970s Soviet Union, the era of stagnation, and centers around students who have no idea that the country they were born in will soon cease to exist. Meanwhile, the main characters, Sergei, Lyuda, and their mutual friend Stepan are carefree studying at the Institute. Sergei begins touchingly courting the kind and trusting Lyuda, and they begin a beautiful romance. However, soon, a newcomer appears in the group - spectacular girl Katya, and Sergei begins to flirt with her. Learning of this, Lyuda accuses Sergei of betrayal. Stepan, secretly in love with Lyuda, begins to help her with her studies, showing affection. They spend more and more time together.
