there is some old official art from Daisuke that depicts Axl as an acoustic guitar player, this fits with his kind and polite personality, and it contrasts with I-No's loud and heavy rock music

And specifically, Axl couldn't go back to his timeline or else the one GG takes place in would no longer exist and everyone would cease to be beyond Axl. SPOILERS FOR STRIVE'S STORY UNDER: During the events of Xrd's story, Axl learns that he could return to his girlfriend whenever he wanted, but everyone would stop existing and chooses to keep everyone else alive instead of going back to his GF, Megumi. The only way Axl could return to his time without the current timeline collapsing is if he swapped places with his GF, which would just keep him away even longer. I-no is Megumi from the current timeline and has the exact same ID as Axl, so after I-no is defeated in Strive's story, I-no swaps with Megumi so that Axl can finally have his partner.
