Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my favorite films, and in this video I examine how it makes the point that love is worth the risk of pain.

The Idea of Success is Corrupted | Nightcrawler: • Our Idea of Success is...
I have an Eternal Sunshine edit on my edits channel: • Rock and a Hard Place
Thank you again for everyone who supported my last video. It is very much appreciated :)

The support on this video has been super crazy, thank you all so much for watching. If you enjoyed this and want to see more, I recently made a video about our idea of success being corrupted expressed through the movie Nightcrawler: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fWSXnhO7dvc.html

I saw the ending as them accepting that the relationship will end but it's still worth experiencing again. Just because it ends doesn't mean the relationship wasn't successful. “Better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.”

I watched this movie with my first boyfriend and it's still my favorite to this day. I love the theme of it being better to love and lose than to never love at all. The pain of breakups is crushing, but it also helps us grow and learn about ourselves and eventually find a way to love all over again.

Well done video on one of my favorite movies ever, Schloetz. I don’t think Clem’s “meet me in Montauk” hints at a supernatural connection, though. I think the Lacuna procedure is simply imperfect. Remember the buffoonery happening in Joel’s apartment as his memories were being erased? Stan and Mary were high/drunk, and Patrick complicated/distracted the procedure as well. There was a phone call in the Lacuna office that Mary answered about a woman requesting yet another procedure. A hint at the imperfection of the erasures. Clem’s voice is just a representation of Joel’s struggle to hold on to his memories of Clem.

I recently broke up with my girlfriend. This film is a life belt for me, your video as well. It's funny how I want to do the procedure but when you mention "They aren't erasing the bad memories, they are erasing and the good ones". It's devastating experience. 'Remember me' scene always gets me emotionally accompanied with 'Maybe we can'. I love you Julia

I hear that, I think something that helped me was realizing actions were different than words. She always said she loved me, but never acted like it. In the end, who lost more? I lost someone who didn’t care enough to work it out with me, and she lost someone who genuinely loved her.

Many people watch this movie as a result of a breakup I was one and I think that it can be helpful but often your feelings of loss at that time can negatively influence the take away from this movie. It’s very much a hopeful message that to really experience life you must open yourself up in ways that won’t be easy or free from harm.

Love this video. I belive people who really understand this movie, really understand it with every fiber of their being. All parts of life are about risk, but love seems to be one of those parts where no matter how much you try to prepare for, to plan it out, to keep just enough walls up for, it still has the power to rip you apart in the most beautiful way possible. It's one of the most rewarding yet messy human experiences and that's why we choose it every time, burns and bruises included. That's why joel and clem chose each other all over again. Amazing commentary and perspective

This movie is very beautifuly written... really proves that when you go for it, it's the most beautiful thing you'll ever experience... even with the risk of breaking up, or not working for whatever reason... Of certian cirumstances... it hurts, you get scarred and it's the most painful thing you'll ever go through... Even with the struggles, I still truly believe that we're so connected, the idea and reality that we're meant to be... There's one in the comment mentioning "Remember me" and "maybe we can"... it hits me so hard and I feel so familiar with the toughts... It makes me believe that even with soulmates parting... there's always ways that we find each other and get back.. and know exactly how to avoid "pitfalls" as you express it in the video, Schloetz. But also how you learn so much more about yourself that you improve, how much your eyes open up.. and even if you don't like certain things about a person you deeply love... you start to appreciate them more because it's who they really are. Our minds is so powerful and so is our fears and feelings. We protect but also want the best and jealousy is a one hell of a thing.. but most important things of all, is trust. And that's what really matters, honestly, to me atleast. I've never believed in it, never thought I'd ever think of it... but, I remember you asking me to marry you. and I said yes. To be with you together forever, I said yes. To never leave you, I answered I would not. To grow old and die together... and I said yes to that with not a shred of doubt. I remember so vividly.. and I have never had any doubt about us. Ever. I still don't today.. I love you my darling, Shaina.

It may be that there's supposed to be something supernatural in them knowing when to go to montauk, but clem does say to patrick on the phone that she wants to go to montauk and joel might've unconsciously heard it. The reason clem started to freak out and call patrick to say that and eventually go to montauk the day after joels procedure was probably brought on by patrick trying all that. It's sort of ironic that the creepy guy trying to use her past to get with her would inadvertently cause them to get back together.

Firstly, out of the hundreds (thousands?) of movies I’ve seen in my 50+ years on this Earth, this is my 2nd favorite of all time. Secondly, regarding the supernatural aspect, I don’t think that’s the case. They’re in his head and he’s cognizant of what’s going on, so when Joel or Clem say something that’s different than the actual memory, it’s Joel’s consciousness saying that. I think when Clem tells him to meet her in Montauk, it’s Joel saying that (likely his subconscious). Maybe he thinks there’s a chance that Clem will be there, but more likely he knows that’s where they met and he thinks that being there will trigger a memory of Clem and then he can try to find her again once he remembers her. Lastly, I just wanna say that I think this movie has one of the most beautiful endings ever and no matter how many times I watch the movie (30+ I’m sure) I can’t hold back the tears. These 2 people have pretty much the most irrefutable evidence possible that things aren’t gonna work out (imagine having your past self tell you that it didn’t work and all the reasons why), and yet they like each other enough to say damn the evidence, let’s give this a go.

I think this is a great summary of the movie. But in my opinion there is a more important topic the movie deals with. I read a coment online that said:"each time you watch the movie, you notice something new." And the last time, I watched the movie, I noticed how joe frantically tries to hide Clementine in his mind palace during the erasing process. There is even a line proceeding this, where he realises what he has done and concludes that altough he cant save his memories, he atleast has to save "her" or his "love" for her, so that he can start the relationship over. There is even a discussion between him and "mind palace clementine" (his projection of her) in which it is made clear that reminding clementine would have been his responsibility from the beginning. Wheter he is doing it for her (bc she might have used the service naively bc she was relaying on him) or bc he doesnt want to let go, is not clear, maybe both. The movie concludes that love is not erasable by simple "memory loss" aslong as you dont want to let go. In a more realistic sense, I wonder if "memory loss" is intended as a metapher for "time".Truthfully, I deeply believe that the main topic the movie beatifully deals with is break up and rekindling. My conspiracy is that Joe actually achieved something through his efforts against the memory vanishing (and so did Clementine...) My tellsign is Joes melancholic trip the next day on which he coinicidentally meets clementine. Mutatis mutandis the intuitive Clementine is going more crazy from day to day after the procedure and seems to still grasp a whole lot of her experiences. She also only now dyies her hair blue i think(?). But that might also be bc of the staff guys encroachment. Anyhow, its nice to imagine that clementine's experience of the memory wiping was similarily as lucid and that she tried equally as much. I hope you read this and understand where Im coming from. No critic intended.

When your lips tremble to express you didn't mean what you said and that those words are just out of anger that wasn't even anger but just sadness. A deep sadness which has been with you because you never felt loved enough and when you finally did. It didn't work and it broke everything. It didn't work will be a long way when you realise it didn't even start. Is it still worth it? Is it?

I don’t like Eternal sunshine mainly bc of the fact that Joel, & vice versa Clementine, never really claimed to try to improve on the very reasons that made the relationship fall in the first place (at the end of the movie). It leans into the ending being up to interpretation. But based on the very things we saw in the movie, it’s very unlikely that they’ll change for the better. The movie depicts all of Clem’s flaws as “quirky” like every other manic pixie dream girl millennial at the time. And Joel has the same low-self esteem confidence of shinji from eva. It suggests that it’s gotten slightly better near the end, but not enough to ensure confidence in the relationship ( to me specifically). In a pessimistic viewpoint, I see it as almost gross & dysfunctional in a way. “Time is cyclical” but do relationships have to be the same way? (Get it? A family cycles of abuse joke mixed with the nieztche’s thought experiment) Don’t get me wrong, love is indeed worth the risk. But these are far from the perfect example of a a healthy, loving relationship.

@Schloetz
@Schloetz Год назад
That's an interesting perspective, though I disagree. While not outright stated, the two of them are at least conscious of the problems of the past and have the ability to improve upon their relationship in the future. Additionally, I don't think that Clem's personality traits are meant to be taken as quirky or stock manic pixie especially considering their conversation in the bookstore when Clem says "too many guys think I'm a concept, or I complete them, or I'm gonna make them alive, but I'm just a fucked up girl who's looking for my own peace of mind. Don't assign me yours." In a way it directly calls out the idea of a MPDG. Also, it's Clem's lack of self control and Joel's low self-esteem that leads to the downfall of their relationship, so I don't think these traits are meant to be seen in a quirky sort of way. I also don't think that they are the perfect example of a healthy, loving relationship, and I don't think the movie thinks of them that way either. We see what about them makes them dysfunctional and how that leads to their breakup. Ultimately the hope lies in them learning from the past and doing better next time around. I appreciate you giving your thoughts :)

This film is one I hate to watch, but love it every time. It honestly kinda hurts and makes me miss having this kind of love in my life. Though, I think it more represents how relationships end than begin. It's the passionate, fun relationship you have as a young adult and maybe spend years in, loving the memories, but wanting to purge them at the same time.

I remember a line from a Steve Martin movie - I think it was "The Lonely Guy" ? - "If you're not willing to risk any pain, you'll never feel any joy." I've been struggling with that sentiment for too many years now..... (-_-)

Life is full of that kind of back and forth, a sense of yin and yang. It's the classic "there is not light without darkness." Unfortunately, it's something that is sometimes hard to accept as a part of the universe, but we must continue forward despite it

This movie hit me so badly. we mostly talk shits about ex and how much we hate them, but if i imagine the memories will be gone, i’d say please keep them. This movie portrayed that so well.

This movie has been so special to me ever since i can remember, it was my moms fav movie so i used to watch it a lot when i was little, and even tho i didnt know the first thing about relationships i still found so much comfort in it. I feel like it made me grow into a very romantic person, and while i think heartbreaks are prob twice as hard on me, love is such a joy, its so worth it.

This video is beautiful, thank you :) Ive always related to this movie so much since Ive seen it. I watched it one time on a very late night drive from my childhood home to a new place, it was a big scary transitory period watching everything I knew packed up in boxes. In that home horrible things happened but I also grew up, it was a new and empty sad thing. Something that inexpicably made me fall in love with the world all over again, as I have so many times. On the drive it was raining and the tarmac was slicked, it was like that scene were Joel is driving when the credits play at the start. I watched the movie because my best friend and someone I was also in love with at the time loved it and I really wanted to be connected and grounded to them. All the movies I had downloaded related to them in some way, Ive listened to so many of their songs and so many of their films, my art and how I see art and beauty shifted so deeply into this like.. soft melancholy. But it was also full of loneliness and pain. Ive hung onto this movie for so long becuase it has helped me process so many feelings, heartbreak and fear, love and inspiration. This person i was in love with and I recently fell out and chances are I will never see them again and they'll never read this, although some bit of me sort of hopes they do. They treated me badly but I loved them, I will always in the way you love a distant thing. Watching them shrink away in my mind is terrifying and I think Im holding onto this movie so I dont lose them, even though I know they are gone and I dont have feelings for them anymore. I wanted to badly to be as close as clementine and joel are in the movie and I really really thought they did too but, things wouldnt have worked for many reasons. I gave so much of myself to them and they werent present. It hurts a lot to yearn for something so long and for it to fade away. I love them though. They changed me. It was worth all this sadness I think in some way.. not to say it hasnt hurt me a lot, I wish I wast hurting but... I really was happy with them and I wouldnt trade that for anything. Maybe it would hurt less to not have those memories but also.. like you said in the video I would have lost the good ones too, and love is always worth it, its worth it to love without remorse. Im in a new relationship now and scared. I dont want to lose them. I dont want the same thing to happen. Im holding onto this film again but in a more hopeful way now. It feels weird having someone love me and be present, its scary. I actually relate to clementine now. Getting bored, being impulsive, a lot of it comes from fear of losing them. knowing that fear is real and just that... it can co exist with me. That I can enjoy this and love them regardless of what happens is great. i think one of the kinds of a good relationship should be one that makes u excited about life, makes u feel really there and able to exist and even if thats without each other down the line you shared in something fabulous together. I just love this movie. It reminds me of why I want to make art, why I do make art. It makes me want to take risks. Theyre worth it. To love is to say, you and I will say goodbye someday, but until then lets laugh as much as we can, i really want to laugh with you. And thats life. I hope maybe someday I come back to this video with new perspective and get to fall in love with the world alllll over again. Ty for this moment

My theory is that Clem got the same message about Montague from her memory of Joel when she was erasing him. Maybe she too was regretting it when she got to the beautiful memories they had together; Montague is the place they first met, so it's the place they both may think of to meet again.

writes comment that will likely never be read by anyone to say that I don't think that love is joyful only because there is a risk of misery. I'd say that love and misery are intertwined, and any romantically-aligned true love such as this will always include both, no matter the outcome. You might be risking *extra* misery, sure, but your path to the end of your relationship will always include a fairly balanced mixture of misery and joy.

This film is Jim Carrey's only very serious role, I only saw this film , few days ago. Mostly known for being a comic actor , who at times has been funny but also annoying in some of his films. I wish we got to see Jim Carrey do more serious films. He has now retired from acting, and is 62 years old as of 2024

Me too. 😅 i initially watched it in theatres because of Jim Carreys hair. 😂😂😂 I was in high school, and I was like, "oh shit, Jim Carrey grew his hair out?!" Then, afterwards, i immediately became an Arthouse film fan. Like, I needed to watch it again. It made me think, kept you on your toes, and made you cry. A high school boy crying in a film. Without any shame. Masterpiece. A true ground-breaking, criminally underrated Masterpiece. 😢

Goddd dude this is fucking amazing. You deserve more attention!!! I keep coming back to this video to watch it again and again for the conclusion. It was an amazing movie and all of us "heart" people loved it. I was married for 30 years, and there were many beautiful things and many stupid and ugly things. We parted ways a while back, our karma was at an end the marriage was definitely over. I still call Barb my life partner, and we even talk from time to time, and I will help her a little. Just like the movie I do not regret our relationship and would probably do the whole thing all over.
