Very rare early film from 1962, by Richard Williams - this is either his second or third film after The Little Island, the same year as A Lecture On Man.
Narrated by veteran UK comedy actor Kenneth Williams.
Print provided and projected by Carrie Odum. Audio transfer by Jerry Beck.
Filmed off a projector screen by Garrett Gilchrist.
There are two men, Squidgy Bod, who is unkempt and uncoordinated, but whom everyone loves; and Thermus Fortitude, who does everything right, but whom dogs, horses and kids hate. The only one who loves Thermus is his stuffed alligator named Charlie. Thermus follows a regimine guaranteed to make him loveable, and it works. Everybody loves him, except his stuffed alligator named Charlie. In a fit of pique, Thermus tosses Charlie out the window, where he lands on top of Squidgy. What's the moral of the story? Watch the film to find out ...
A very early, very odd and quirky entry from Richard Williams, later the winner of over 250 international awards including 3 British Academy Awards, 3 Oscars and an Emmy. His films include "The Thief and the Cobbler," "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," and "A Christmas Carol," as well as "Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure." He also did titles and other sequences for the films "The Return of the Pink Panther," "The Charge of the Light Brigade," "What's New Pussycat?" "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," "Prudence and the Pill," "Casino Royale," "The Return of the Pink Panther" and "Murder on the Orient Express."

I remember seeing this one night on TV when I was a kid (in the 60s). It was a filler after a full-length movie. Today, for some reason, I thought of it in the shower... "when it comes to love, no one really has it good, especially stuffed alligators named Charlie." I remembered "Squidgy Bod and Thermos Fortitude." So, I Googled it... and lo... here it is. Sheeeshhhhhh.... after all these years, I am not sure why it made such an impression on me as a kid! But I am really glad I found it. :)

"Nobody loved him, except his stuffed alligator, Charlie." They don't make 'em like they used to.

The moral was so deep XD - but, if you think about it, it can have a bit more sense (even if it's very simple): if we'd treat this movie as a metaphor, and Charlie would be simply the inner side of Thermus (and/or the inner side of a regular human being), we'd get a simple conclusion that we'd never be really happy with ourselves - if we'd do everything right according to us, then we'd be loved only by ourselves; if we'd do everything to be loved by the other people, then we'd be loved by everybody but ourselves, and that would lead us to giving up with our inner side, which was never really liked by the other people.

I have searched for this film for 30- 40 years. It was shown together with Ingmar Bergmans film "Viskningar och rop" in swedish cinemas in the early seventies. I know now why I didn´t find it. All the time I thought is was about a crocodile. It wasn´t.

I've never forgotten Squidgy Bod. Its been with me since I was at boarding school in the 60s. Every now and again, the names, Squidgy Bod and Thermos Fortitude pop into my head... (I wonder what they're doing...?) They were unforgettable for their quirky invention and especially for the brilliant versatile voice of Kenneth Williams which was the hook to the wonderfully quirky cartoon. I looked it up by chance. So glad to see it again. Like others here, I am amazed why it pops into my head from nowhere. I think its because myself and other boys at my school loved those names... Squidgy Bod and Thermos Fortitude and our attempt to imitate the languid vocals of Kenneth Williams.

was this remade? I remember it a clip being on n Bob Godfrey's show The Do It Yourself Film Animation Show and the drawings were rather different. what an extraordinarily bizarre little short - strangely moving in its way. thanks so much sharing this - I've been looking for this since those days, thirty, forty years...

Pretty much the same for me, I have had fond memories of this since I saw it some 30 odd years ago. All I could recall was that 'Squidgy Bod' did everything wrong and that everybody loved him. I had thought it was called 'The Legend of Squidgy Bod'. Seeing it now makes me wonder like yourself what the hell made such a huge impression on me. I think I would have preferred not to have found it and have it remain as a fond but distant memory. As it is I found it a great dissapointment. :(
