How should I love all those people out there in the great, wide world? Well, the apostle says that we should do it as we “have opportunity.” When something arises. When you see the beat-up guy between Jerusalem and Jericho. When you have a chance to do something for a fellow, make sure to do it. But to whom should we make a point of it? To those of the household of faith. To our fellow Christians. Especially to them.

I grew up in a narcissistic family upbringing. I am in my mid 30s and only now in my life is Jesus showing me what true love really is and means. Thank you, Lord Christ.

@@jakebarnes3054it's undoubtedly a part of why I'm still unmarried at 34. Failure to launch due to time wasted at college was most relevant until i was 27, but after that it's a mixture of the trust issue already mentioned as well as the rational fear of infidelity and divorce, and not to be trifled with, the disappointing rarity of qualified bachelorettes. You made me take inventory of the main reasons. I realized that having retreated inward in response to abuse makes it difficult to risk allowing people to hurt me now. It's not like it's a quaking fear, it's more that i live according to a habit i developed as a defense mechanism

I have always thought loving my neighbor means hoping the best for them, which is hoping for their eternal salvation. The level of action this translates into varies. When I have malicious thoughts towards others I know I need to check myself.....or say an imprecatory prayer as the case may be.

@@tomhitchcock8195 How are imprecatory prayers loving to the one you're cursing and wishing destruction and condemnation on?
@DaDitka
@DaDitka 4 дня назад
@scottlundquist5850 Because our first priority is to see God's will done on earth as it is in heaven (see the Lord's Prayer). Our first priority is for God's holiness, righteousness, and goodness. When a person has crossed the line and given a reprobate mind (Romans 1 and 2 Timothy 3), there is nothing left but to pray for his destruction so his evil will not destroy and ruin the good, thereby thwarting the Lord's Prayer. I will not care about the salvation of a person more than that person. If that person wants to spit in my face and in God's hands, swear at me with 666 f-bombs and innuendo, and tells me to get lost, I will do what he wants and leave him be. I have not been called to pull weeds. I've been called to harvest wheat. And let's remember- according to the world's definition of love, "you do you" and "live and let live," and "I did it my way." While I reject that definition of love, I also have no problem with forcing such a person to play by their rules and abide by their standards. If they wish to be left alone so they can do what they will, then I'm happy to show them the love they think is legitimate and leave them be.

CS Lewis sometimes described this as "disordered loves". I think the two who disappear into the fog you mentioned at the end would make good characters in a Great Divorce sequel.

Love is the primary purpose of our function/function of our purpose(God is love and we are created in His image - thus to love is to be like Him)and thus* doing so is sabotaged to make it more difficult- for some more than others- when it’s not really that hard(to do). I know the context is arguing against a nonsensical universal love of all people, but this point really deserves some nuance before everyone that agrees with you turns into CS Lewis critiquing Psalm 119:118. The point of the gospel text is not hatred when compared to love for Christ but that nothing should get in the way of love for Christ, including the real antagonism that can occur in the closest relationships when two people serve two different masters. The disassociation and estrangment of a man in a homosexual marriage by a brother/sister/mother/father for example cannot be defined as an act of love proper for the individual as it is an act of judgement and rejection. We just try to reframe it to look like we're being faithful to a super-abundant standard of love rather than calling it what it is: rejection, disapproval, and, in a sense of the word, hatred. You may love the person all you like in the sense of wishing them well, but it's stupid not to recognize that it looks like you hate them. The same can be said for self-defense. I cannot love the theoritical gunman who's threatening my family while I'm shooting him dead. If such a man exists, I would justly hate him, because the love that I have for my family requires it. It's more than comparison: it's treasuring and valuing Christ with a zeal that consumes everything it touches.
@scottlundquist5850
@scottlundquist5850 8 дней назад
Well said. In my book (and I suspect yours as well), "love...in the sense of wishing them well" is not true love. Once you've rejected them, divided from them, shunned them, expelled them, you have objectively crossed over from love to hate, at least in your actions, even if you do wish that they would come to repentance, even if you do still feel love for them in your heart. How's that for nuance?

What they have is for good people to love evil and that would make them not good anymore because God does not love evil. The devil goes about like a roaring lying lion seeking whom he may devour. Chose loving all things or love God. The question is how to feel about those that lie about God?

@msanborn3729 11 дней назад
You’re correct. Written by various men under the direction of the Holy Spirit. The Bible is Gods word, written by men of faith. The amount of scrutiny the Bible has faced over thousands of years, is a pretty good indicator that it wasn’t man’s PERSONAL opinion. Even if you don’t agree, we are glad you’re here, because at least you’re here in God’s word! Even if you don’t agree with it, you can’t really argue that having a biblical worldview is a bad thing. I would love to challenge you to read the Bible and then come back and give us your views. Here’s a piece of advice that holds true for any book, if you haven’t read it and don’t really know much about it, you shouldn’t have an opinion. Once you read it, and you form an opinion after that, then you can substantiate your beliefs, to a point.

@@msanborn3729 The number one cause of atheism is reading the bible. Read the old testament and come back and tell me it is not a bad thing. As to your, or a, god, there is nothing supernatural in this world, zero. Every single argument for a god can be boiled down to the 'god of the gaps' fallacy. A god only begins where your knowledge ends. All that said, in this time of an alliance between the extreme left and islamists, I find myself aligned with the christian right.
