This song was released in 1979. Freddie wrote it as a tribute to Elvis. The genre is rockabilly, an early form of 1950's rock and roll.

The beauty of Queen was that they had four different types of people on the band and all of them participated in making the songs and bringing in ideas for good songs... This resulted in Queen never having a distinct sound or a specific style... These boys started the whole thrash metal sound too... And had these grease fifties Elvis sounds too. They were extremely versatile and nothing was off limits.

This. Rockabilly. Queen also did "Man on the Prowl", a totally ignored equally fun song, also rockabilly, to my ear even better than Crazy Little Thing but that's just my ear. Very Eddie Cochranesque. Where is the tragic Eddie Cochran? All over RU-vid, if one looks and so worth one's time, pretty big catalogue for a short-lived young guy with big talent. And Stray Cats, yes yes yes 👍🏻.

Get used to Queen being constantly " different" they have done songs spanning across several types of genres, but you always know it's them when you hear it because they are very distinct in their sound overall. This was Freddie's tribute to Elvis. I'm sure that if Freddie came back he'd be very vocal about his opinions on our modern technologically advanced music, then get his bros back together for one song and send us straight back to the 70s and 80s. He'd also be instrumental in shaping how this new generation of children relates to music and possibly inspire a whole new age of classic music and rock. There's actually a band out there today doing exactly that. 4 guys started a band a few years ago immortalizing Led Zepplins classic sound right down to the vocal patterns of one Robert Plant, they have gained a lot of mixed attention for this and scattered opinions; but they took their influences and ran with it, becoming a modern day 70s rock band that sounds great and pretty on the nose to what you'd typically get from rock bands of this era ( band name: Greta Van Fleet, take that as a request if you want but I was bringing them up to explain my point, I definitely think they are up your ally though based on past reactions😉). Regardless of that though, I think we'd all love to have the real rock legends back. If Freddie came back I'd throw away my all savings if it meant getting to meet him just once ( sure, I'd be broke and homeless afterward but.. at least I met Freddie 😂).

Although I’m a huge fan of Led Zepp (they’re my all time favourite band), I don’t really like Greta Van Fleet. The first time I heard them I was like “wow, that’s impressive, they sound exactly like Led Zepp)… but that’s actually the problem. They sound like a copycat Led Zepp, but without the X factor that made LZ so good. It’s a pale imitation, is what I’m saying. I’d like them a lot more if they took that inspiration, but made it their own- more like Wolfmother, which was absolutely heavily inspired by 70s rock, but who made their own music still, rather than just being a copy of a specific band.

To be honest, I'm a sound engineer most musicians would sell their granny for the chance to record on the older gear, a lot of the plug ins used by digital workstations are digital replicas of older classic equipment trying to emulate the analogue sound. The difference you can hear is possibly more down to the expectations they were mastered to - the average persons listening devices have become so much more improved than they were in the 70's and 80's, so at the time they were mastered to sound ok on the worst possible scenario - mono radio and tv. Another factor could be the added compression automatically added by digital music platforms to try to ensure a consistency in all tracks the site. This track and many others were produced by Reinhold Mack at Musicland Studios, Munich, Germany, a producer who also worked with Electric Light Orchestra - Listen to either Queen or E.L.O. on vinyl through good speakers at the right volume... its something special! (Then listen to Pink Floyd - The Wall from start to finish... it's a concept album and a journey never really meant to be taken as individual songs). Loving both your channels btw 👏

Great post, many thanks for this. The craftsmanship is gone. There are indie artists still honoring craftsmanship but in the mainstream industry, it's all cheap and easy and essentially copycat, it's aural fraud, aural deception, nothing is real, anybody can do it and that's the prevailing attitude. And man, it sounds it. Sound quality, performance passion, all across the board there's a serious cultural loss. To get anywhere used to call for reasonably broad exposure to music genres and eras, talent, drive, some charisma, ability to connect, many many things. Given the depth of craftsmanship, passion, and dedication Freddie Mercury had, it's hard to picture him working comfortably within the low-low standards of now. I wish I could credit this but can't recall who said it - that most music today is exactly like Kleenex, utterly disposable, unmemorable, one paper-thin thing after another, throwaway sound. There's real truth in that.
@nanner3200
@nanner3200 2 года назад
To be honest I only understood about 2/3 of what you're saying (not a musical tech type person....but I did live through vinyl, 8-track, cassette etc) Today's artists might sell their granny but how many of today's artists would even be a thing without all the electronics available today? Meaning you needed real talent back then.
@swcoder
@swcoder 2 года назад
I agree with all of this, and while modern musicians crave the older sound, I think a musician from back then could get more of the modern sound. They knew how to get all they could with what they had, instead of trying to sound like something it's not, they'd figure out how they could make it the best at what it was. A key difference in modern musicians. Look what synth did to the early '80s, it basically created a new genre.
@briancrankshaw3814
@briancrankshaw3814 2 года назад
@@swcoder oh absolutely, you have to sculpt the sound on both older and newer equipment, although modern equipment now comes with a whole load of presets whereas producers of the past had to know how every piece of equipment works and how it would affect the recording

Until you've seen a QUEEN Concert with Freddie Mercury... you just don't know the POWER they all had over us fans! I attended FIVE of their concerts and between the amazingly poetic lyrics in each song, their sound & lights being second to none, their costumes being simply jaw-dropping AND Freddie prowling the Stage in his flamboyant majesty and allowing each and every one of us Fans to sing along with him... note for note... those incredibly sound-deafening arenas were nothing less than a PURELY MAGICAL MUSICAL & VISUAL HEAVEN for that entire time that both Freddie and The Boys had all our goosebumps poppin' from the back of our necks to the length of our legs the entire evening!!! There simply will never be another Freddie Mercury!!! GOD SAVE QUEEN WITH BRIAN MAY & ROGER TAYLOR!!!

As far as "Crazy Little Thing Called Love"! Freddie wrote this song in a matter of minutes in his bathtub! Yet, it is by far one of his and Queen's more "catchy" Pop/Rockabilly songs ever recorded!! I have been a Fan of Queen since their first Album in the early 70's. Nobody here in The States had even heard of them! In fact, it took a few more albums before the "trendy" Americans would ever finally catch on to Queen's amazing sound. Too bad, that both Freddie and The Boys were WAY ahead of their time for the lagging American music trends at the time. I remember hearing "Crazy" on the radio for the first time... which was released FAR in advance of, what would be later announced as, their forthcoming New Release Album, "The Game"! I'm like... WHAT?!?!?!? They are releasing a lost Elvis Presley song from his archives?!??? THAT is really strange!!! Of course, my Mom was a huge Elvis fan... which caused me to be a big fan of his on the side at the time, but... still?!?? I kept listening to the song and it was SO DANG GOOD and CATCHY, I couldn't stop listening... and THEN IT HIT ME! Brian's guitar solo!!!!!! WOW! THIS WASN'T ELVIS AT ALL!!!!! THIS WAS THAT NEW QUEEN SONG I HAD HEARD WAS SECRETLY GOING TO HIT THE AIRWAYS SOON!!!!! I had only belonged to ONE Rock Band Membership Club... and it was QUEEN'S International Fan Club back then!!! As soon as I knew it was Queen, I began searching and calling to see how I could own the single or the upcoming album!!!! Just like Queen's music AND why I love their music so much, though! EVERY one of their songs is so different. They never got stuck in a rut of sounding the same... even on the same Album! QUEEN: THE GREATEST ROCK BAND OF ALL TIME. PERIOD.

This was Queen's first #1 hit in the US. About the "old artist in the modern day" thing: Freddie was always someone who was up to date with music, always open to the newest artists & trends, going with the time. And Queen always went with the times, which was one of the reasons for them staying successful. Queen in the 90s sounded as modern & contemporary as Queen in the 70s. Another artist who was always in his time or even more often ahead of his time was David Bowie. He was a true visionary (in the late 90s he predicted today's internet) who was from the 60s to his last album before his death 2016 has always on the forefront of new music. He would be a perfect example of your idea of an old artist who's up to date with the music of today.

Thanks for reacting to Queen and Freddie! This is a tribute to Elvis. Story goes Freddie wrote it in 10 min in the bath. He was in the bath at a hotel and got inspired and called out to his roady to bring him his guitar.

Queen...I was 15 when live aid happened over here in the UK. And I knew I was watching something special. They are unlike anything..Fred and queen are just themselves. If anything sounds like them they are just biting their vibe.. What other band did complete soundtrack to two major movies that have both become cult classic. And one..well highlander has a epic soundtrack. The other is flash Gordon one and that needs no selling..... If you two have never heard flash by queen, oh my god...😎 I guarantee minds will be blown.... Much luv guys...🤘🤘

Love you two's reactions. Speaking to what Lex said at the end. Check out Gary Numan, Are Friends Electric, or Cars, or M E. Then play his newer stuff like Ruin. He was kind of forget about and broke and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails helped him revamped his sound because he influenced so many later artists.

Following up on James, This was recorded two years after Elvis died. the first time that I heard this, I thought That it actually was Elvis. I was eleven years old in the winter of 1980, soon to turn 12. And I was just learning about rock n roll then, too

Someone may have said this already (I looked and didn't see it) but Freddie wrote this song in 10 minutes. He was in the tub in his Munich hotel and got inspired. Shouted for his guitar and wrote the whole song. It's a tribute to/inspired by Elvis.

I was born in '61 and I *hate* the sound of autotune, so yeah you're right. This song was a deliberate throwback to the style of the '50s which is why it made you think of Elvis.
