Suggestion: Spencer knows how to turn a shipping container into a living space. You have an extra container. Create a reinforced concrete vault near the house and underground, add insulation, electrical, plumbing & furnishings and turn it into your family storm shelter.

I work at a nuclear power plant. After Fukushima, the NRC mandated that certain pieces of equipment need to be on site and maintained, including big portable generators, pumps, hoses, and fittings that can be used to get water to the reactors during a beyond design basis event. They also built a tornado proof building to keep it all housed in. The building has concrete walls poured two feet thick, big steel swing doors, with heavy duty roll up doors inside of those steel doors. That build is no kidding tornado proof. Something like that probably is not in your budget, but retaining wall blocks might be.

It honestly wouldn't even need to be completely buried. Maybe dig 6' down, pour concrete slab, drop the container in, and pour concrete to just below frost line. Then use combination of concrete blocks, rebar and sheet steel to create a permanent form to then fill with concrete.

The tile work looks awesome Spencer. I agree about the tornadoes. A shelter is definitely warranted along with an early warning weather monitor. Consider an ICF shelter large enough for bunks to ride out storms. They can be built to withstand anything. Oh yeah, and buy some snake boots for walking. Snakes will usually bite low because that's where they are. You'll still be scared, but it will save you on a hospital bill. Safety is everything.

@@sandrasherritt9708Actually, no. It is not the strength of the building but how securely it is attached to the ground. A tornado would toss the shipping containers like sticks. When a tornado pulls up a house, the only thing left are secured foundations and/or plumbing that has been buried. A storm shelter is built into the ground (basically a lined hole) for that very reason.

Ahhh the music during the shower take-down. It was a moment for those of us all baffled by how long you…o gosh. Your son’s adorable cuteness just warmed my heart and I completely forgot what I was saying. You two should make more, why not?

Great job on the tiling, Spencer. I don't think there is anything you can't do. My husband is the same way! And yes your next project needs to be a shelter! The weather pattern has changed so through out the world. The storms are worse then they ever were. But you need to be safe from the storms, tornados, wind. You can replace your house, but not your family! On the brighter side, love the home you have built for yourselves!

My husband did critter control for years. We live in Florida. And he used to put moth balls around the perimeter of the house and property. Snakes do NOT like the smell of it. Trust me it works.

Really love how Spencer goes about his to do list and understands that with time and patience everything turns out just as they planned. I can't imagine the look of Kenzie watching as the outdoor shower is dismantled either joy or the parting of old ways. Maybe if you ask real nicely Kenzie Spencer will come up with a root cellar storm shelter combo. I wonder how you both are coping with the storms the last few weeks have been crazy but it is spring and that happens just stay safe and give those kids hugs and kisses 💋 be careful and stay safe my friends God love ❤ ya both.

The root cellar/storm shelter combo is an excellent idea, which is also a motivator in getting a garden growing and a canning station of some sort may also come into play in the fall.

I look forward to your videos each week and loved this one! Just that one part where Cam is smiling at Spencer, what a beautiful face, he's so cute and Beau is just as cute! Storm shelter sounds like an excellent idea! I have a friend in Tennessee, and they're constantly having tornado warnings; that has to be the scariest thing. And those darn snakes!!! I really hope that the lady telling you to plant garlic is right; you need something to get them away from the house. Hope you got through that storm and the house looks so beautiful and Spencer has done such a wonderful job with everything. I don't want to think about a time when you're not on here, so please build that storm shelter or garage or whatever, so we can keep enjoying sharing your life with you all. Thank you!! (from Sandi)

So Spencer...is an underground storm shelter your next project? If so...please take care in planning where it will go...so it will have easy and immediate access for your beautiful family, but won't be in the way when you buy a couple more containers to expand your home size...can you say man cave and crafts room for Kenz and the kids?...or maybe more bedrooms and baths for the next kiddies? Also, have you given thought to drilling a well so you would have a "sure thing" water supply? Absolutely love your channel!!!

I absolutely LOVE all of the work ya’ll have done in building your home, it’s beautiful!! You guys are such perfectionist that you don’t hesitate to redo something that doesn’t suit you. An in-ground shelter is a great idea but keep in mind that snakes live in the ground. Make something very solid with no way for a snake to get inside and room to store the food you will eventually can for later use. You two have a beautiful family 💕 Thank you so much for sharing your lives with us, I almost feel that you are part of my family. God Bless you always

Looks great!!! We spent 3 years ago in Missouri for a drop in the ground concrete shelter for $1800. We rented a track hoe and dug the hole to dig to spec and put pea gravel down in the bottom. They came and dropped it in and then we had a friend come over and scrape the dirt in around it with his tractor and blade. We saved about $600 by doing the extra work. Otherwise it would of cost about $2500. It is totally worth the cost and really not that expensive if you shop around. Ours is big enough for 8 to 10 people.

Please be careful and I highly recommend following Ryan Hall Ya’ll on RU-vid for superb weather information, especially when it comes to severe weather/tornadoes etc. He and his team of weather spotters/storm chasers are the best out there with accurate reporting and he gives a heads up when to seek shelter from life threatening events.
