Ben Alsop, Curator of the Citi Money Gallery, found a love note inscribed on the back of a coin in the British Museum. The inscription was simple: ‘From Fred to Nellie, France 1916’. There was no additional information to identify who this couple might be.
This is the tale of how Ben used a blog post to hunt down Fred and Nellie and uncover a 100-year-old love story.

I want to thank you all for doing things like this. I love all types of museums and really wish that I had more opportunities to go when I was a kid. Now I’m pretty restricted in my mobility. My dreams of being a historian are well past. Although I will say that seeing all the little nooks in the bookcase behind him are really really peaking my curiosity. Is there field of study to become a curator of curious cubbyholes, nooks and other sorts of crawl spaces and secret openings found in museums... and other places, that hold our past?

so much more personal than just another standard coin.. Ive found a couple of the bent into an S shape type love tokens, (William 3rd sixpences) A relatively common find for a metal detectorist, I wish I could tell who, when and why it was given!

This is fantastic! I just found a victorian love token made from a 1872 us half dime. It had to have it. I love the idea that a dime was turned into something that someone would have held dear. I know nothing of the history of the person who once owned this token but thats part of the beauty.

Most Great War records were destroyed in the Blitz of WW2. About a third survive. Details from the photo can lead to unit records.

Love this stuff but please, don't include this music in videos. Instead of focusing on the curator, it'distracts me to try to identify it. At first it sounded like an person banging on a xylophone playing the same note over n over. If you're going to add music, always ask yourself will this distract from the speaker.

Born and living in the States all my life, I do not know what the Latin inscription is around the border of Fred's message - the "motto," if you will, on that side of a shilling coin. Might that have significance for a Doughboy in France just after marrying?

What is quite strange is that Ben is the spitting image of a Nick Allsop (two Ls) I knew (sadly, he died) and his daughter, Clare. It's uncanny. I know that both Nick and his wife had previous marriages and I wonder if there's a relation.

Such a wasted opportunity not to get the background story from the donor back in 1966: information that can never be recovered. There must have been many Fred and Nellies, we'll never know which used this coin, or what their story was.
