Re-twist shouldn't hurt. The stylist is twisting too hard and your locs will eventually break. Been there, done that. Also, we still have to be mindful of our language, for language reflect our perspection of the world. The my locs are 'neat' vs freeform, is yet again divisive language in the natural hair community. When simply put, one is groomed, manipulated to appear a certain way while freeform locs are in the hair's natural state without manipulation. Both are beautiful.

If you feel pain when getting a retest, the person is twisting your hair too tightly! It will cause you to have bald spots

It's crazy because folks really worry about people with faux locs or the "dreads" vs "locs" arguement. If the idea is to get folks COMFORTABLE with themselves those things shouldn't even be part of the conversation.

I needed this, I started my loc journey a month ago. I had been wanting to loc my hair for years just to go through that experience. I got so much backlash in the beginning oh you don’t want to do that to your hair take soo long now and oh that’s not professional. Just a lot of bs, eventually I just stopped caring about what others thought and went for it. I love my starter locs they are beautiful!

I freeform my locs. I don't get the roots re-twisted. I just separate the locs. No pain. However, I love all kinds of locs. Also, I'm originally from Philly. Odunde is fire! I've seen so many inspirational hairstyles and fashion there.

this video is about black hair acceptance. Our hair is different whether its loose or locked, so for us locks arent just a hairstyle its a way of having healthy hair with our unique texture. white people hair naturally falls straight and will grow long. it doesnt tangle easily and is much more suited to being loose and is also globally accepted. most other races have straight hair by far and large, our hair is unique because its naturally incredibly kinky.. anyone without access to a comb will form matted hair, but our hair due to its texture undeniably looks much better and kempt in the style than other races. also our hair locks neatly without having to over manipulate it. people with straight hair literally have to damage their hair and rip it to form somewhat neat looking locks. and dont bother arguing with me cause Im a loctician of 14 years , Ive had plenty of white clients. we still looks better in them and we can do more styles and various size of locs. we revolutionized locs. we even created interlocking and sisterlocks/microlocks. those innovations came from black people. and we are not talking about culture we are talking about texture acceptance in a world where straight hair is the norm and black hair is not. so nothing racist about it. our hair experience is completely unique compared to white people who are the standard in society . whites dont have to be involved in everything. aint no black people in lord of the rings.

As a Jamaican who has been growing my locs for almost 20yrs, I can assure you that the word “dread” has nothing to do with being dreadful. “Dread”, natty dread, rasta or natty is a friendly term that is used to refer to a man who is wearing locs. females with locs are usually referred to as empresses or queens.

Really dug the point about getting locks being a journey of acceptance. I just started my lock journey about 2 months ago. Not gonna lie, though neatly done, i still wore a beanie in public because I wasn’t 100% comfortable with how they looked. However after having them for this time now, they are really starting to form and i couldn’t be happier. Whilst part of me still wants to cover them, the other part is extrememly proud of them and the future in store for them. To me, when you take on a challenge to grow your hair, people go on that journey with you. So the part of me that wants to then cover up is diminished by the fact that this is something I am doing for me and something i could not be prouder of. Something I want to share with others and the more i do, the more I step into myself. ✊🏽

As a person who has locs In my opinion. Locs is a hairstyle that grew (no pun intended) from people just letting there hair do what it does naturally when you don't manipulate it,comb ,or brush it. It has evolved because people would experiment with different styles (ways of manipulation) that wouldn't disturb the look (no combing or brushing) and as that evolved people began to except loc styles because the media would show prominent people with them and now it's accepted to wear locs (time a certain degree) Just my opinion.

I started my Loc journey in 2021 @ the age of 63. Through my hair journey, locking my hair was the Best decision I've ever made. Locking my hair is also a spiritual journey. In terms of my spiritual journey with my locs I made the decision to cover my locs to protect my crown chakra from the environment and people negative energy in addition to coming to the realization that my locs were personal and not for the outside world if that makes sense. For me I had to separate ego from spirit. I'll be celebrating my two year loc anniversary on 11-17-23. I'm aging gracefully and loving my beautiful crown. To all who read my comment. First off dread locks are for everybody. The history of dread locks are all over the world plus most of the characters in the bible was rocking locs.

I love Ashley's locs, but I really wish they had spoken to anyone of the many beautiful men or ladies making a statement with freeform locs. As someone who chose to let me hair do what it do naturally I don't think there is such as thing as a better way to wear your locs. But there is definately a more accepted way to wear them, and that is manicured like Ashley's, I even felt a lil shade when she described freeform. It would have been so much more interesting to hear from someone like Willow Smith, Nadene Clark, Wango Garb to name just few of the inspiring ladies rocking their freeform locs that is inspiring and empowering. Mostly because of the association of unkept, untidy or wild hair that is suggested when referring to freeform locs. I had a really had time with people's boring reactions to leaving my curly afro to a more untamed looking freeform head of locs, and made my journey of self acceptance so much greater.

I feel a freeform person should have also been interviewed. There are also semi freeform people like myself who washes their daily or weekly and ate comfortable with their own hair texture. We aren't trying to smooth out hair roots that are meant to be be curly. I do however finger separate locs and twist the roots every once in a while, maybe once or twice a year. There just is a lot left out of the conversation. On a positive note I'm glad there is a conversation at all.

History of dreadlocks, it’s part of everyone’s history, all hair naturally locks over time different texture equal different timing, they were here before culture and here after many cultures came about and used them, that’s why, no one should be afraid to Rock locks we are all one big community no more separation due to skin or religious Belief, it’s such an amazing beautiful journey especially free forming, the locks look so unique and beautiful and can’t be matched lol, but all locks are awesome for many reasons wether they are free formed or salon they all locks but I suggest free forming cus they look awesome

Locc'd since November 2017. The ugly stage is real but so is the stage where it seems like your hair just grows super fast. I have a high top and my locs reach my collarbone now.

She's right about the struggle. I just started my locs 3 months ago and they're short and uneven. I worry about trying to date because I look the opposite of whatever is considered attractive to men. My mother doesn't hesitate to tell me how ugly she thinks my hair is whenever she sees me. It's crazy feeling like this because I've been natural for 20 years now. I like keeping my hair short too. Locing really does force you to accept yourself and have patience. However I don't have a problem with someone geting faux locs.

I called my starter locs the crackhead look stage. 😂 Put yeah, looking at my starter locs from 5 years ago and not really liking it to now adoring my hair does fill me with more than a little pride. Since I had a perm, we had to cut off the perm ends. My locs were maybe an inch and a half. Now my hair goes down to my middle black. 5 years of growth and I learned to love my hair.

Love my locs and wouldn’t trade them in for nothing. Don’t care how people look, like, or think. Oh, keep in mind, too much re-twisting leads to thinning and breakage. Keep that in mind.
