I love how when Lovecraft says something is “indescribable” he goes on to describe it for a full paragraph.

I get the feeling that Lovecraft himself saw the irony in this, and decided to poke some fun at it "The Dunwich Horror". Upon a gruesome discovery(I won't spoil the nature of that discovery here), the narrator points out that: "It would be trite and not wholly accurate to say that no human pen could describe it". I've always seen this as a rare case of Lovecraft having a bit of fun at his own expense.

I often see it as an indirect way to say that writing and mere description can't quite do it justice

I've read Lovecraft stories that have been terrifying, amazing, and perplexing. But this one just comes off as kinda sad. H.P. was known to be a reclusive individual and many no doubt found his creations disturbing. In this story he gives us a gimps into his own outlook on life. The perspective, of an outsider.
@tenhirankei

I caught onto the fact that the Outsider was looking into a mirror half a minute after he saw the repulsive thing that had caused the maddening flight of the people.
@Mk101T

While the outsider is just a shorter story and a bit different than Lovecrafts usual. This reader is what makes it so horribly sad. Try this reader ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9xyJBPELup4.html And when ever possible ALWAYS listen to the Lovecraft stories read by Wayne June .

Sorry all , and sorry to the video poster/reader For my comment. No one should be diminished for their effort to give us the viewers , content to enjoy. And now I realize the OP of this thread meant that the story is sad (melancholy) Not sad as in being sub par . Yes the Outsider is sad to realize what the monster felt upon being shunned and seeing their self in the mirror. And not so much a feeling of scary / horrifying like Lovecraft usually attempts.
@toprak3479
@toprak3479 2 года назад
Yeah. This story is pure gothic, dripping with melancholia through and through. I can't help but presume that Lovecraft was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's poem "Alone" (as well as his own personal experiences and outlook) when he wrote this story.

It also reminds me a bit of Mary Shelly’s novel Frankenstein, At least as far as the P.O.V. of Lovecraft’s narrator goes as the ultimate outsider. Of course Frankenstein is even more important as an influence and an object of parody in one of his other horror stories Herbert West Reanimator.

Most people probably see the twist coming once they reach the part where the party attenders start screaming and running away but it doesn't take away from the story in my opinion. The surprise of the twist is not as important as the allegorical implications it brings with it.

I don't know if H.P. ever intended a protagonist to be female, but it was a nice change of pace to listen to this story told from that perspective. I believe the horror is intensified by this character being portrayed as female and it was a great change of pace. Thanks!

@BARRACUDA THE GREAT Why? I thought this story in particular was a good one to apply a female to. There are no indications of the sex of the Outsider. Believe me that I HATE SJW bullshit and forced diversity. But I can APPRECIATE when it is done naturally, and this story was a nice example. You don't have to either hate women OR give them your prostration... why make it a battle when it isn't necessary?

Intriguing idea, making the Outsider female in this version. (Although it should be noted Lovecraft never actually specified the Outsider's gender.) I can't say why exactly, but somehow, a female Outsider emotionally resonates with me in ways that a male Outsider doesn't. There's something so heartbreakingly innocent and pitiful about the Outsider's expression at 18:00, like a duckling learning for the first time how ugly it really is. Part of me wants to hug her deep in my arms and tell her everything is going to be okay. Damn, I'm actually crying now.

Hey OP (or youtube equivalent title) so a lot of people are talking about the dragging of the words and yeah it doesn't exactly work, but voice work is hard, I myself have been trying it for a while and it can be hard to decide what to go with or to get your voice to behave. Don't let the comments discourage you, this was in large part good effort. I'd say your best effort was your calmer more casual reading, at times it did get a bit try-hard but you practice, you evaluate and you move on, with your talents the better for the effort.

The challenge with this story is illustrating it too much. The ending is of course what this whole story is about - and therefore showing the character (even if it is only their projection of self) doesn't really make much sense. Perhaps just having the locations through the eyes of the narrator would have been better? I have to also agree with the articulation of the reading. Voice work is challenging and I applaud you for working hard at it. However, there is not sufficient 'passion' in the delivery in this piece. It really needs 'moments' marked out in the characters perception, and I feel it lacks this. It would be interesting however to get your opinion on your choices of the delivery. That being said, I think it is brave to put your work out there for public criticism. Keep at it and keep growing in your dedication and execution. :)
@toprak3479
@toprak3479 2 года назад
Completely agree about the illustrating part. The misleading + twist in the original story is made possible due to the narrator withholding information (not deceitfully of course but because they themselves don't know the truth) but when you illustrate it, you have to actively lie (by showing things in ways they aren't-- namely the narrator) to keep the mystery, which isn't as great. The story simply wasn't ever meant to be put into visual media.
