Similar to Jim Morris' wife pushing him to remain in baseball, when Nolan Ryan was with the NY Mets at the beginning of his career, he was not doing well and thought about quitting, his wife, Ruth, talked him into staying with baseball. When he retired after 26 years, he held 51 records.
@Patrick-xv6qv
@Patrick-xv6qv 4 месяца назад
That is not true. Nolan Ryan never wanted to quit baseball or the Mets. He felt the Mets gave up on him when they traded him and he was angry at it for years until got a better understanding of the business side of baseball. Nolan Ryan does currently hold 51 MLB records and most are strike out records. And he holds the record of most career no hitters at 7. The next closet is Sandy Koufax at 4. But he never considered quitting baseball. Ryan was a man who was not a quitter and would get pissed off if he was even taken out of a game or like once when he told his manger when he was with the Rangers when the manager was going to take him out if the game, I may not be throwing as good right now but I am still 10 times better than any of of those mother F'ers you got warming up in the bull pen. Nolan Ryan was not a quiiter and never considered it.

I remember him pitching pretty well. Back then throwing 98 was nowhere near as common as it is now, so there's no way he wasn't going to get brought up to the bigs. But truly the definition of 'flash in the pan'. Once guys caught up to his stuff, he didn't have any other go-to pitches. A real life "Natural"
@nathancline4000
@nathancline4000 4 месяца назад
I remember him coming up I was in college at the time. I believe he had injury problems again. I don't think it was so much a only having 1 pitch issue. I believe he had multiple. They just focus on his heater, because left-handed relievers were often specialists. They might only come in for a couple batters, usually brought in to face a good left handed batter because a lot of lefty's struggle to hit left-handed pitchers.

Baseball by Ken Burns, a PBS multi-episode documentary is a GREAT documentary on…baseball, it’s history. The original was nine “innings” and went from conception to 1994. Several years later Ken Burns revisited Baseball and created “Extra Innings” that talks about PEDs, how baseball came back from the brink with McGwire and Sosa and how Latin America has made an impact on MLB. Great documentary.

His Dad gave him the best advice a father could give: "It's ok to do what you want to do in life, until the time comes to do what you were meant to do." He basically told him that he was meant to be a Major-League pitcher and to go for it. I've told my own daughter this and tell people that it's my mantra as I found it to be true in my life as well...excelling at a job I never thought I would even enjoy or could do.
@jrc01718
@jrc01718 3 месяца назад
Tbh, I'm not sure if that's how his father meant it, though. I always took that line as him saying that it was fine for him to do it as perhaps a hobby, but it wasn't what he was meant to do, or it wasn't realistic. His father was never really interested or supportive of his love for baseball, and after he said that, he followed it with, "That may not be what you wanted to hear," and Jimmy was noticeably frustrated because he was feeling like no one was really being supportive of this opportunity, and in the following scene when he's back home venting to Lori, he says "I think that man lies in bed at night, just thinking of the one thing he can say that'll hurt the most," and Lori says, "Maybe he was right," and then they get into an argument. Maybe that's just me, but that was always what I understood that scene to be. Although, to be fair, as I'm typing this, I guess it's possible that Jimmy turned that around and said, "This is what I'm meant to do." Idk, just my 2 cents, lol.

It was less than an hour from where my dad was born & raised (Morton/Levelland) before he moved to Ohio to work the orchards with his family as a teenager. I love this movie, because of the message of never giving up on a dream, the nostalgia for small town USA, and the great actors in it. “For the Love of the Game” is another great baseball movie, staring Keven Costner. The one thing I love about this movie is how it shows a huge thing can come out of absolutely nothing That piece of land that the nuns bought in faith of that unknown man's belief of oil had the biggest strike of it that part of Texas ever saw (according to the story) and it all was born at the site of a DIY baseball field in the middle of that giant acreage and the players had their own faith that they'd leave that "sandlot" oil field and go on to bigger goals and feel like kings The "middle of nowhere" cliche was given a facelift in this story and it challenges the notion of an insignificant person or object being of no value (also probably Hollywood spicing things up) but still a worthwhile idea to think about And seeing that allegory play out in Jimmy's journey to "bless the town of Big Lake one more time" is a nice touch

If you want to see Costner as Wyatt Earp and Quaid, as doc Holliday, their movie came out the same year AsTombstone. I don’t know how well it did in comparison. It had enjoyable parts, but Costner’s Earp seem to be A much more cold version and Quaid was a great Doc Holliday(Who was always the more entertaining anyway) down to his physical changes which were stunning! (Tough but I still love Val Kilmer!). You can also see Quaid in a Great movie “The Right Stuff” About early NASA.

This movie is based on a true story about a man named Jim Morris who debuted in Major League Baseball at the age of 35.

As a Rays fan I had a definite interest in this movie, but unfortunately, Quaid really wasn't interested in the role other than it being work and largely mailed in his performance. Extremely disappointing showing from him.

When this came out in the movie theaters back in the day, my 4 young kids took me out on Father's Day to see it together as a family -- needless to say, it's still a great memory that continues to brought up to this day, for them and me both! This film does such a great job of portraying Jimmy Morrison's balance between his baseball dream and the love for his family (and really, fatherhood in general). It really is endearing. Oh Amber, my grown kids even still love the soundtrack (since you mentioned the movie's music); they gave that to me as a gift some time later after the dvd was released.

Jimmy's first batter he faced in the majors was struck out on four pitches in real life, instead of three A foul ball was hit in that sequence but to save time in filming the movie, the director just went with 3 simple strikes That game was actually played on my mom's birthday, September 18, so a really nice connection there and we'd just moved into our new house on Labor Day weekend so I remember exactly where I was at the time this happened, even though I never knew it DID happen lol

This looks like way out west Texas, but it was actually filmed in and around Taylor, Texas, which is east of Austin (where I was living and working at the time.) Even though Dennis Quaid's natural surliness is evident in virtually every role I've seen him in, it's still fun to watch the movie because of the location. Aside from knowing people who worked as extras, my association with the film was spending an entire day at a railroad crossing waiting for a train to go by so they had a shot of that car towing the U-haul waiting on the train to pass. The scene didn't make it into the final cut. As for baseball in Texas, it IS a thing, so this is one instance where the film takes liberties with reality. I would be really really surprised to know there was ANY high school in Texas that didn't have a baseball team. I played high school baseball (in the 70's) and there were only four boys in my graduating class (though the other classes were slightly larger). In schools that are too small to have a football team, Basketball is the big thing. Also, the traffic radar won't pick up the baseball. More movie fiction.

You guys are not wrong about us Texans and our sports, I’ve lived in Houston when Oilers sold to Tennessee and got to help host the Texans first 2 season Home games as part of my JROTC years, and saw many Astro home games as well. And now currently in Lubbock where we have Texas Tech and UT rivals and as well as LCU and Midland baseball as huge sporting attractions here. So much fun to watch these games and the town spirits come to life! lol

I'll bet you haven't seen The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh. It stars the man who every kid wanted to be before they ever heard of Michael Jordan...the legendary Julius (Dr J) Irving. He was my top basketball hero growing up and he revolutionized the sport of basketball with dynamic moves that had never been see before. It's a comedy movie, but also has some fun basketball action in it.

So glad you guys did this movie. The real Jim Morrison after he got hurt in the minors went back to school at San Angelo State and played football and got his teaching degree. The part that tears me up everytime is when he tells his boy he made it. Being athletes and teachers I knew this movie was perfect for you.

This is based on a true story as it said in the beginning. Jimmy Morris played in the majors for 2 seasons, being brought up to the majors at 35. That is the age when most players only have about 4 or 5 years left before retirement. Morris actually has a cameo in this movie as "Orlando Umpire #2".
