Welcome to the lovely Series III #Jaguar #XJ12!
Kindly provided to us by Klaas & Terlouw, Enter, The Netherlands.
The car basically was a significantly facelifted #XJ series II, incorporating a subtle exterior redesign by the Italian design house Pininfarina. Changes from the Series II included thicker and more incorporated rubber bumpers with decorative chrome only on the top edge, flush door handles, one-piece front door glass without a separate quarter light, a grille with only vertical vanes, reverse lights moved from the boot plinth to the larger rear light clusters, and a revised roofline with narrower door frames and increased glass area. The option of a sunroof and cruise control were also offered for the first time.
The 5.3 L V12, 4.2 L straight-six and 3.4 L straight-six engines carried over from the Series II, with minor changes. The larger six-cylinder and V12 models incorporated Bosch fuel injection (made under licence by Lucas) while the smaller six-cylinder remained carburetted. The smaller six-cylinder engine was never offered in the US, and the V12 was no longer offered there after 1980.
In late 1982 the interior of all Series III models underwent a minor update for the 1983 model year. A trip computer appeared for the first time and was fitted as standard on V12 models. A new and much sought-after alloy wheel featuring numerous distinctive circular holes was also introduced, commonly known as the "pepperpot" wheel. Pirelli tyres were also fitted as standard equipment.

Interesting format, I like the casual commute with the presented car - here the XJ12 - before presenting the car design more specifically. This gives more feeling for the context of specific design choices. I‘m thinking the XJ12 would make for an interesting Niels van Roij Design project as well. Looking very much forward for future content.

Very nice video doing the car justice. Yes a suit or at least something smart casual is the rule for being behind the wheel of the V12 Jaguar. When driving my S3 Sovereign "Bagheera" I NEVER get into the car in jeans or overalls. The car demands the driver should respect her standards. BTW Pininfarina did not design the S3, they were engaged to do a facelift (which they did superbly) because Jaguar's engineers were all tied up trying to bring the XJ40 to market. Ref the haunches over the rear wheels: I have parked Bagheera next to her relative (the E-type) at Coventry Motofest and if you stand behind both cars you can pick up the styling cue from the E-type's flanks that exists in the XJ. Haunches of a big cat as Jaguar folk have it. As for the wheels, IMHO pepperpots are the ultimate rather than those on your car.

@@pcjthe1 Thanks for tuning in! Glad you like the video. A suit or smart casual is indeed the rule for being behind the wheel of the V12 Jag! Glad you enjoyed your S3 Sovereign in a similar fashion - pun intended... When it comes to the design of the car, Pininfarina designed the S2 to S3 facelift - hence that remark. Indeed, they didn't completely do the entire car. The work was executed second to non. Such a lovely way of pushing the S1/S2 into the future at the time. The haunches over the rear wheels are fantastic indeed. Very subtle but very much present at the same time. The E-type styling cues have been translated in the XJ truly lovely. The wheels are very personal. Much like the exterior paint colour and the interior trim. The pepperpots are iconic, but perhaps a bit too flat, lacking the sculpture of the wheels on this car ot the alloys which can also be found on the XJS. Nevertheless, to each his own! Thanks again for tuning in!

I enjoyed the video. The walk-around is a better way to illustrate the features of the car than using the old promotional videos, which may not highlight the features you want to focus on. For older cars, I guess the challenge is to find examples in good enough condition. You want to show us the car as the designer intended it to be seen, not as it looks after 40 years of rust, dust and wear-and-tear, or modification by previous owners. In this case, the XJ you found was in great condition, and a fine example of a great design.

Your taste is excellent, Niels, as ever! 😇 As far as I’m informed, the Series 1 was still overlooked by Sir William Lyons, designwise. Pinifarina did „only“ the Series 3 makeover! The bumpers, as you explain. Then the rear roof section is higher, not only for more headroom for the rear passengers, but also for more square looks. Rear lights etc. - But the design remains British, as I would state, with a fresh up by Pininfarina for the Series 3. And the two tanks have also a history (not for being thirsty!): The Mk2 had one single tank. Then came the S-Type, on Mk2 basis, and this became the rear axle of the famous E-Type, as has your XJ12! With this new axle, the singe tank in the middle of the car had no space anymore, wherefore they decided two have one reservoir on each side. Therefore, the S-Type has a longer rear section/trunk as well, what made him less nicely proportioned, than the original Mk2. Jaguar corrected this, when the 4,2litre S-Type was born, the 420, which had, together with the Mk10/420G the new front design which led to the first XJ‘s; the final masterpiece of Sir William Lyons. May he Rest In Peace.
@NielsvanRoijDesign
@NielsvanRoijDesign 2 года назад
Many thanks for tuning in and sharing the information on the tanks. Indeed, Pininfarina only did the restyling, or perhaps facelift, of the S2 to the S3: mainly the top end of the car, grille, bumpers and taillights, but also door handles (and thus doors) were changed.

What amazes me about this is that the Jag wasn't blown up at the Dutch border for being a gas guzzling, forest destroying, ozone depleting monster which it is but wow- what a car. I have one and i love it more than life but I live in N.america where gas is cheap and plentiful and where people know better than to bother about the environment. Very well done for a sharp and succinct presentation- love it.

It has truly lovely proportions indeed. Which makes it rather hard for people like yours truly to sit well in them, sadly... The Pepperpot wheels are rather iconic indeed - this example doesn't feature them, but these wheels still look rather handsome on the XJ12. Indeed, the V12 can really shift in a straightline. Nice video. I own a same XJ12 like the one shown. Thanks to the explanation in the video I vame to understand why I love the lines of this car so much. Its all about design tricks that have been applied so carefully. Though this is a car from the 1980's its origins date back to the 1960s, and that gives the car such a classic look. William Lyons, the founder of Jaguar who designed the XJ himself, was a genius. Peninfarina did a great job as well with the Series 3 XJ. The last of William Lyons designs as one could truly say.

The Jaguar XJ was originally designed by Sir William Lyons and those lines and features will NEVER be credited to "Italy". All that Pinifarina did was add some tweaks to suit the market in the USA that would also be accepted here in the UK. For a "designer", I thought you would kow better young man! The car in the video is a beautiful example and the only reason for my thumbs up.

Nicely condescending. 🥂 As per the video Pininfarina did the design of this car. It is a rather major change of the entire top part of the car - for instance. And many other changes too. A massive amount of work on an automotive design scale, definitely not “some tweaks” over the Lyons work.

Dont the Jaguar tail lights at 7:24 look like the Mercedes W220? Have a look yourself: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:2001_Mercedes-Benz_S_430_(W_220)_sedan_(2010-09-23)_02.jpg / At 9:23 the rear bumper surrounding the rear fender looks a bit too prominent; at this place a smaller version would habe been more elegant, as 'side bumpers' are not at the forefront to absorb heavy impacts. At 9:32 it looks as 'sticking somewhat out' into the air. Apart from this, I especially prefer the sculptured bonnet with the twin headlights on each side which I prefer rather than the rectangular ones of a later model. The presenter in his VBritish style suit matches the car perfectly. American presenters like Doug DeMuro sits in luxury cars with short pants and naked arms, which is not really a suitable attire for what he is presenting. I drove this V12 once on a German Autobahn where I could see the petrol gauge decending in line with the increasing speed. But this was also tghe case with a Mercedes 280SE.

Glad you like my attire! Many thanks indeed. Rather important, in my humble view, when presenting any car. So: always a bespoke 3-piece suit when we're doing business. Well spotted indeed. And it shows that the design of a car - or for any other object for that matter - never is the work truly of one man or woman. @@NielsvanRoijDesign, the "feel" (vaguely defined) of style foreign to the native culture of creator is something Italians can wear as a badge of honor.
