Wow, the Gregg Rolie days are in my opinion the best days of Journey. They were just getting their feet wet as a group and they were animals live! And c'mon, Steve singing to that girl....legend!!

I wasn't "in their" but I knew they were going to be great because my local rock radio was paying, Lights, Feeling That Way, Anytime, and Wheel In the Sky from their precious album, Infinity ", non stop.

She was gorgeous and he rolled right up to her, Steve's singing to her there and she's blushing cause her and Steve are gonna go get busy after the show. As everyone rolls their eyes cause we know what that means, lol. These current feminist destroyed that by gone era, lol.
Well Midnight Special was known for live only performances. If I had to bet, I'd say its live except for the ending chorus "Na na na"(sounds fishy) only because Steve Perry is one of the rarest singers who can sing as good if not better than the recordings.

This is the video that made my heart melt when I was 16 years old. And now at 61 I can’t even begin to tell you what it does to me now. In fact, you wouldn’t want to know. I totally love that voice. It’s so beautiful. And the long hair I’ve always been crazy about his long hair and that drives me crazy.lol. And those looks he gives and the expressions on his face just blow me away. If there was ever a man-made, that was my ideal, looking man it is him. The first time I seen this video I was way too young but alas, I am human and he stole my heart that night. And he still has it. Some people would say I’m too old to feel this way. But I’m not, and I surely don’t feel old. This man’s personality, especially in this video is is so magnetic and totally 100% the sexiest I’ve ever seen in my life. Maybe it was a good thing. I was only 16 when I first saw it. Because I don’t went to every concert until I met him That’s how he much he affect me. There’s no way I can say enough about this video. There’s no way I can describe what I feel and always have. And I have always wanted one or him I just wish that I got that chance!!!! And I still want that chance. In my heart, he’s always been the love of my life.
This performance is absolute perfection. In fact, this LIVE performance is the RECORDED version for radio play. He was INSANELY great. One in billions, Once in a lifetime level. We miss you SP!
I think this is the same episode as the “Loving You Is Easy” clip. Both performances are canned, or lip synced. I’m not sure why this was as TMS was almost always live, and Journey themselves were in their previous appearance the year before. They certainly were entirely capable of reproducing their big studio sound live as other recordings attest.
Maybe they were worried about the new cordless microphone failing on live TV? Or it could've been nothing more that Steve had a cold and would've sounded bad? Who knows?
That doesn't sound identical to the record to me. It sounds close, but not an exact match. Catch 22, the better you perform it, the more skeptical people get.
It's one of their best songs, but I guess they couldn’t do it live. Oh well. Still, it was nice to see people standing and rocking to it. That chick he sang to enjoyed it for sure! 😄
@@StephanieJeanne So hard to say…given the era, I wouldn’t think it was a dollars issue. It would be interesting to hear the explanation. Maybe they had an issue with the gear or weren’t allowed to sound check. Maybe Perry lost his voice the night before…could be a lot of things. The show broadcast on May 18 (don’t know when recorded) and Journey was in the midst of a major tour at the time where they performed this song nightly.
@@StephanieJeanne Maybe it was money in a sense. It might have been like a "commercial" and then you'd have to buy a concert ticket to hear the actual live rendition of it.
Some of the comments say this is lip-synced. Sure does sound like the album version. A lot. I thought The Midnight Special prided itself on not doing lip-synced performances ... ? I was around 13 when the show premiered. We all were spoiled back then -- live performances from some of the top bands of the day every Friday at midnight? Come on, man !! But that aside, love the song and this performance. I wonder how much planned ahead it was for Perry to sing part of the song to that specific lady? Would not mind reading about her story. The song was big on the radio. One of the funnest to sing along to in rock history. Who can resist belting out the "na na's" along with the band any time this song comes on? All 7 lines of 'em ?
It isn't even questionable. That is most definitely the album version that they are lip-synching to. I've heard it enough over the years to know. Besides, there's a distinct tonal difference between canned and live.
Yeah, it’s lip synced. It’s not a knock on Journey though because they were a great live act and at the peak of their powers in ‘79. There are plenty of vintage live clips online of this very tune that attest to this. In fact, the date this was broadcast, they were in the middle of playing five (!) nights at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom. It was a huge tour and they played this every night. So, while TMS was usually live, there’s surely some explanation as to why this wasn’t. I could only guess, but maybe Perry blew out his voice or some other technical reason. It happens.

Damn. I hope I'm wrong but that really sounds like they're just miming along to the studio version. I thought that wasn't allowed on The Midnight Special.
Journey could, would and did play all of these songs live, and often it sounded better than the recordings. This was one of the rare times that the Midnight Special used a prerecorded track. My guess is that it was the show's decision and not the band's. Could have been for any number of production reasons, but this isn't a reflection on the band's capabilities by any means.
Lovin', Touchin' and Lip synching. lol. After watching MS from its beginnings every Friday. Bands used to play live. The last year or two it was all lip synch
Was it? I stopped watching the show around 1979. This definitely sounds like a lip-synced performance. But man did they do a good job with it. I'm sure it helped that the song ended with vocals only.
I can’t stand this song, but this performance reminds me of my cousin and me cutting up a half pound, at his house, after we got off of the second shift at the mill. This was on the television. I had just gotten out of school for summer break, first check and we got the 1/2 lb.
That's what the ladies were trying to do at The concerts back then. The babes would try and get right in front so they could get seen. And you'd see the singer look over and point the lady out for security and they'd nod.

@@Chilly_Billyhes performed with the flu before, regardless of sickness they wouldn’t need to lipsync. It’s usually the programs that have rules about that stuff. most likely journey had nothing to do with it
Usually logistical reasons. Just showing up in time from another town, equipment could be already heading to another show, always easier to just show up and fake it.
