You didn’t have much before the fire, but you had your family. There were six of you living in a small apartment on the edge of town. Your mother and father worked hard to provide for you, your grandparents, and your great-grandmother.
You tried your best to help out where you could. You took a night shift at the bakery to help out the family. That’s why you were on the other side of town when the fire started.
That’s why you didn’t get there until it was too late.
They said the fire had started in the basement, weakening the building’s structure. It collapsed before anyone even knew about the fire.
They said it was a quick death. One second, and it was over. One second, and you had lost everything.
You didn’t know what to do. You walked around the rubble for a while, trying to come up with a plan. All day you sat by the remains of your home, your family. Until the sun began to go and it began to grow cold.
You wandered the streets as the sun vanished behind the horizon. You hugged the only clothes you had left tighter around you, but they offered no comfort or relief from the cold.
Finally, you walked into the garden. The royal family had built it for the public to enjoy. There was a bench that overlooked the town. You sat on the bench.
You were going to sleep there, but it was much too cold for sleep. Instead, you cried for your family.
Alone, in the garden, surrounded by beauty and darkness, you cried.
But you weren’t alone. And you would never be alone again…
