Low Budget Chalk Paint Makeover / The Waverly White Hutch

In this week's video we will focus on spending as little as possible to make as much profit as we can selling Chalk Painted furniture. We will use White Waverly Chalk Paint and Varnish on a cheap Hutch I found to keep costs at a minimum. A little distressing was also done keeping this makeover simple and easy for a beginner! We also switched up the format too test out the waters, using narration instead of text to explain the process.
I hope you guys enjoy another DIY furniture makeover, let me know what you think in the comment section!

I love the narration style on this video-details are important! You are a natural teacher. Everyone is different, but I don't care for music in videos because I would rather hear the person speaking or hear the tools being used. Some people film their videos of them working outside and it's cool to hear the birds, etc. Great video! And great job on the furniture-it looks beautiful.

Love the piece. The "new" video format was completely acceptable to me. Like your other videos it gave me all the info without a bunch of the extra 'stuff' I see in other videos (mostly live videos) that waste my time. I also LOVE LOVE that you use and show lots of different brands. I'm a beginner and only paint for myself. When people(friends and patients) see my pictures they ask me...How? I tell them KACHA FURNITURE! Look for her on Utube and Instagram

Hi, thank you for sharing your tips and knowledge. My future project is to renovate mahogany table and chairs. I am planning to use white chalk with a little gold destressed on the ornaments and gloss varnish on top only and the rest will be sealed with wax. I have never been refurbishing furniture before. Could you please advice what shellac product should I use to stop my wood bleeding and also any little tips that can be helpful during my project. Thank you in advance. Hugs and kisses Daria

Zinsser Primer with shellac is the best for that. It’s oil based and you will need 1 to 3 coats to stop complete bleeding.

One more tip to save on $$ and work is.. If you're trying to paint a very smooth slick surface rather than sanding you can wash it with TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate). The chemical will very lightly etch the surface just enough so your paint will bond exceptionally well. It's also wonderful if you've found any moldy spots on the furniture you want to paint. Just be sure to rinse well after. TSP used to be hugely popular but that's waned in recent years. I've no idea why other than pretty smelling stuff seems to have replaced it. It's an incredible degreaser also. It's still a staple in the home renovation industry to clean wood anything including floors, walls, etc. The only thing I've found you don't want to use it on is glass and the chrome finish on appliances & fixtures. The other upside is it's super cheap! A single box costs just a few dollars & will last years. Just a teaspoon of the powder in a bucket will do for most jobs.

Nice! I have heard of this before but never tried. I really like the Dixie Belle cleaner now but this was a complete budget makeover!

Love the new format. This is exactly what I did with the first few pieces I painted, and they were very popular. Then when I got bored painting things white, I tried getting more creative, but the reality is that people need to have the right decor to fit with the fancier pieces. So it limits who can buy it, and they do not sell as fast. I love all of your more creative work, and have used some of them as inspiration for things I have painted since. One of my shaded pieces did actually sell immediately : ) But the white ones, or just a single colour, are perfect for a quick sale, because they fit in with many kinds of decor. Thank you for sharing all of your amazing tutorials, and I'm loving the podcasts : )

If you have a piece like mahogany just apply 3 coats of Shellac before painting everywhere. If you already start and you see the bleed coming through then stop and apply 3 coats of shellac in the problem area and then continue.

Love that you left inside brown for a color contrast. Looks awesome. No sanding, no priming is the way to go especially with large pieces. Can u please do something in red? Thanks.

Kacha, I'm considering painting my dining room suite. Major project ....chairs and large table and 2 piece hutch. Do you recommend chalk paint or furniture paint? Also in this video you mentioned finishing with shellac. Would you recommend just using clear wax? I'm not doing the tops...going to leave them their natural wood color. Thanks and I love your videos and you are so talented.
@KachaFurniture
@KachaFurniture 4 года назад
I am not sure what the difference is between Chalk Paint and furniture paint, to me they are the same thing. Also the shellac recommendation is for stopping the bleed through on the wood. I was talking about using it as a stain blocker not a finishing sealer! If you are not doing the tops then I totally recommend Chalk Painting and waxing the finish on! I did my table top and ended up using wax because I do not like the look of stronger finishes like Polyurethane. It ended up just fine but it's probably not the way to go for heavy use. Since you are not painting the tops that's not a concern for you!

@@KachaFurniture thank you so much! I'm trying to get brave enough to do it. Just one of those feelings of oh do I paint that pretty wood. It's pretty but Oak is so outdated. Thanks again! Glad I found you on youtube!

This piece looks so close to a hutch that my great-aunt bought in Detroit in the early '70s, then it got passed onto my mom and now me. I'm not in a position to do a makeover on it now, but someday! I just can't decide if I want to restain it to another wood color (it's so orange!) or something else.

Thank you so much Kacha... I loved everything about it! I do love both styles of videos but I really enjoyed this one showing how you can start out on a budget while you explained how to do everything along the way to accomplish a beautiful outcome. You're a true inspiration. I've personally have been wanting to paint & flip furniture for years but I'm on a strict budget so I haven't been able to afford getting started with how expensive it can get. Thank you so much for showing how you can still get beautiful results with a low income to have a stepping stone to start out & grow with. I love how your heart is to teach others how to start doing what they love in a world of so many options that are hard to find the money to start. I would have never thought I could create a beautiful piece I could actually sell and make an extra income from with lower priced paints.. You've given me hope to be able to finally start doing what I've been wanting to do for years with income being a huge starting obstacle ... I honestly think everything you touch turns out gorgeous & amazing! May God continue to Bless You beyond Your wildest dreams 💞🙏🏻💖
