Low immersion yarn dyeing - Outta this world variegated colorway

In this video I am dyeing the variegated colorway that is part of the Outta This World kit for the MiramarWoods Novum Alas Shawl kit designed in collaboration by Kristina of @Miramarwoods and myself. I use 3 colors to make a variegated skein in a low immersion dye setting. This isn't a tutorial exactly, I discuss how I set everything up and show the technique but there are no dye mixture instructions, just application of already mixed dyes.

This is such a beautiful colour way. As a beginner dyer I find watching & learning from people such as yourself, hugely beneficial & so inspirational! So thank you so very much for sharing. I am too fearful of adding colour all over at the moment because even too close to one another results in colours that seem to muddy & blend in a not very nice way. Plus, I like to leave some white space. Watching this has encouraged me to give it a go though!

This is one of the best almost tutorials I've seen. Can you throw a few bits in about how long each time on the burner? Just a little more info.. not a novel, but, just a few breadcrumbs for us hungry folk. It really deserves more.. cause you are talented and we want to know!! Thankyou! :-)

Exactly the combo I am looking for. Great! What were the colors again? Berry Pink, Blue, and Teal? Thank you! UPDATE: Ok, I think I've figured it out. Pink or Fuschia, blue, and violet? And, I'm assuming you put a couple of tbs. of Vinegar in the yarn soaking process?

This was for a shawl kit collaboration. It's been awhile since I've dyed this one but without looking at my notes I believe it was Royal Purple, Frozen, and Berry Crush from Dharma

Sorry it took so long. I took a hiatus from producing videos to focus on getting my business rolling. I started with barely any water and the yarn was presoaked in citric acid. The key is to be very specific about laying the colors in the same spot until water starts accumuliting. accumulating. There's enough water from the dye to keep the yarn from straight up burning, turn your heat on the lowest setting and wait between applications. I'll do another video in greater detail for everyone very soon.

It varies. Minimum once all color is applied is 20 to 25 holding temperature between 180 and 200 degrees. If the color doesn't clear I apply more citric acid at a longer time.

Hey congrats on your hand dyed journey. TBH its been so long since I've dyed this colorway. The recipe is probably buried somewhere in my heaps of notes. Back then I was usually doing 1 or 2% depending on how saturated the dye color was. I am thinking of bringing this color back but just haven't been brave enough to go deep diving through stuff :D

When the water simmers or bubble doesn't that felt the yarn?

It is typically harder to felt superwash yarn than non superwash yarns. However, you have to be cognizant, when the water is so low, of the temperature because it can scorch the color which I have had happen. I usually keep the temperature pretty low or off completely when starting colorways like this. You see in the video that I had turned it on at first but quickly turned it off again because there wasn't enough water and you could hear the sizzling. You generally don't want the water to be at a boil. Between 180 and 190 sets the color.

Sure. It really depends on what I'm dyeing. Here I started with very very little water, the yarn was presoaked but you can see in the video that when i press on it there isn't very much. Going forward I will include those specifics in the video. Thanks!
