Sandra Ng must be the all-time MVP of Hong Kong cinema. She spent decades playing best friend and comic relief roles until she started getting lead roles and showing what a true comedic genius she is. I think she is THE funniest woman in film.

I watched this last night and REALLY enjoyed it too. JG seriously impressed with both her acting and handling of the action. The time given on screen to developing the characterisation of the family members got me emotionally invested in the events that followed to a greater extent than I would have otherwise.

Totally agreed on Joyce Godenzi. I had only seen here in small roles before this film, and her acting ability and physical prowess with the action sequences totally blew me away. She should've been a huge star. And the drama with the family was so well handled, I couldn't tear myself away from the movie.

Just finished watching this and oh boy, you weren't kidding! The fight/gun scenes were absolutely amazing, but it truly honed in on the drama and focused more on the dynamics between all the family members and I think that's what makes this film work so well. Joyce Godenzi gave one hell of a performance and the scene you talked about during the birthday party absolutely broke my heart! As always, another great video Will! Keep up the good work 👍🏻

Glad you enjoyed this one! That birthday part scene is soul destroying. I loved all the performances in this film, but Joyce Godenzi and Carina Lau really stood out to me, thought they were both fantastic. I also really liked Sammo as the straight man who was a little in over his head with the crazy family dynamics and just trying to keep the peace.

Righting Wrongs is still untouchable for me but this one’s top tier for sure, especially that end fight!
@hkcinemasociety
@hkcinemasociety 10 месяцев назад
Righting Wrongs is a great movie, it's an indisputable action classic. That being said, I much prefer the characters in this film. I found their journeys to be much more relatable, and the characters more grounded and human. Other than the Wu Ma and Cory Yuen characters in Righting Wrongs, the characters in that movie feel kind of two dimensional to me, which has always been the problem I have with it, it has this kind of exploitation film quality that slightly detract from the impact of the tragedy of the events. I understand not everyone likes overblown melodrama, which this movie offers, but I really was drawn to it.

The Inspector Weres Skirts is slated for a December release from 88 Films. Loved this movie, great action sequences, great fights, cool shootouts, it felt at times like a In The Line Of Duty style movie. My only gripe is I'd liked Darren's artwork as the actual blu ray sleeve cover instead of the Lethal Lady cover. I went re-purchased Warriors Too Prodigal Son because they put the slipcovers art on the blu ray sleeve, I'm OCD & it a bloody curse 😂😂😂

This film is excellent, EXCEPT for that bit with the condom, which unfortunately turns her husband into a kinda reprehensible character and makes it harder to engender sympathy for him because he’s such a dickhead. And, even worse, this thoroughly reprehensible act is spun by the script as having a positive effect in the end, which is a horrible message to send, absolutely stomach-churning. Everything else is so good that it doesn’t ruin the film, but that bit kinda tarnishes this otherwise shining example of HK action crime dramedy, and I gotta call it out. That said, am looking forward to upgrading my ancient HK DVD. As for Corey’s best film, that’s still gotta be Righting Wrongs for me, but this one is damn good, and I’m glad you finally got to see it and that you enjoyed it o much. Thank you as always for your insight-filled review.
@hkcinemasociety
@hkcinemasociety 10 месяцев назад
I don't disagree with that analysis at all. It's a very dated, ridiculous act that totally makes him see like a piece of shit and is absolutely spun for the positive within the movie. That being said, it doesn't ruin the movie for me because I think everything else is so well handled.
@supoa9489
@supoa9489 9 месяцев назад
It's a reprehensible act, but it's consistent with whats established his character and it wasn't with malicious intent. Plus these films able tackle sensitivity topics sometimes add dark and twisted humour to it.

I watched this last night and I really enjoyed this movie. The action scenes were awesome! I just wish the birthday scene would have sort of cut to the chase a couple minutes sooner. I still haven't seen enough of Corey Yuen's filmography to confidently say it's his best film, but it's my favorite of the one's I've seen. I just love how much Corey was championing these awesome female action heroes when so many in the 80s were sidelining women into love interest roles. Many have spoken about sexism in the films of guys like Jackie and Sammo, but it's ironic this film starred Sammo's eventual wife in the lead and him in a side role. Clearly he was excited to let her have the spotlight (having already given her a great side role in Eastern Condors). Regardless, one thing that's clear is Corey Yuen LOVES female action heroes. From Yes Madam! through Dead or Alive, just a lot of fun stuff with women kicking butt.
@hkcinemasociety
@hkcinemasociety 10 месяцев назад
It's interesting to me that it was apparently Sammo's idea to do female lead action movies. He was the producer of a lot of these films, including Yes Madam, and it was his idea to put women in the main roles. Yet at the same time, he's often criticized for the sexism of his own films. It was a crazy time back, then!

@hkcinemasociety Oh well it's even more impossible if you're region free, luckily I'm strictly abiding to Region B for that exact reason so it's much easier haha. Though movies from different genres are sorely tempting me to Region-free! I'm only new to HK cinema (except for seeing some of John Woo's best movies a few years back) so luckily 88 Films and Eureka are supplying a good stock of them to keep me going!

So, this film is better than Ninja in the Dragon's Den (1982),Yes, Madam! (1985),Righting Wrongs (1986), & Saviour of the Soul (1991) ? 🙄😂🤣😂 Well.... I find that impossible to believe, and probably the result of an interlude of hysteria , over excitement & terminal fan-boy-ism.
@hkcinemasociety
@hkcinemasociety 9 месяцев назад
It is definitely better than Yes Madam and Righting Wrongs. That being said, if all you care about is watching people shoot each other beat each other up, you might not agree, but the story and characters are much better. I'll take a contemporary set movie with guns over a period martial arts film every time.
@dubsurgeon1742
@dubsurgeon1742 9 месяцев назад
@@hkcinemasociety well, each to their own, I'm a long time fan of the ACTION/ Choreography- many films I've seen had no subtitles or dub, and the story is absolutely secondary to the action for me, and uncannily almost ALL the (100's of) long time fans I know !!! There are far better films for STORY content than HK action films, you must be happy with a low common denominator. You wrote- '' I'll take a contemporary set movie with guns over a period martial arts film every time.'' so you have admitted you are not a choreography/martial arts lover'', instead you prefer spectacle over substance in that regard. I've managed video stores & sold/distributed martial arts films for over 30 years, so to me you seem either relatively new to the genre or slightly perverse in your aesthetics, but still ....we are all free to have our own tastes & opinions, however great or naff they are- I now know that my taste in action films don't coincide with yours & probably vice versa. 🙄😁 BTW- I pulled out the DVD of SSS & re watched it in case I was being unfair and missed something last time I saw it. The story is a joke full of adolescent ideas of how the police force work. The action is child like fantasy and includes women falling on tables from 20 foot & landing on breaking glass, without a scratch. Sammo gets about 10 seconds fighting with Yuen Wah. Joyce Godenzie doesn't perform more than 3 consecutive moves in any of her fights. The characters are horrible, mostly squawking racists. You seem to be in some opinionated dream Will, maybe re-watch Police Assassins & Righting Wrongs again when you're off the medication? 🙄😉

I agree with you that this film is superior to Yes Madam. To me Yes Madam is one of the most overrated Hong Kong films ever. Before seeing it I had heard for years how great it was and after I watched it I was let down. The action(what little there is) is awesome but I find the rest of the film a slog to get through.
@hkcinemasociety
@hkcinemasociety 10 месяцев назад
I really like the serious stuff in Yes Madam. I think the characters are well done and the plot is interesting enough. For me it's the over-the-top comedy that takes me out of the film. Those scenes are hard for me to get through, because they're so out of keeping with everything else it's like suddenyl watchign a different film.
