I came to the Gulf Coast to volunteer as a Hurricane Katrina relief worker in the fall of 2006. I wanted to witness first hand what was happening on the ground. I came because I knew in my heart that those who suffered and lost everything needed help. Also I suspected that there was more to the story than I was seeing on mainstream media news coverage. After spending 3 months in several destroyed gulf coast communities I decided I would buy a video camera and document what I have seen and the stories that I believe are important to tell.Like very many communities along the gulf coast, the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans, suffered irreparable damage and significant loss of life. To this day many communities, mostly poor, have not received sufficient funding to rebuild their homes
and towns. What is different about the people in the lower Ninth Ward ? In the process of evacuating for the storm, residents
were relocated to all parts of the country. Not only are they not receiving the proper state of emergency funding to rebuild their
community, their property is being liened by the city while they are away for not cutting their lawn. I filmed some of the residents of the lower ninth ward and the people who have been helping rebuild the community so you could hear their story, in their words.

This was a damn good documentary. And I find it absolutely abhorrent how the government treated the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Makes me sick the way folks were treated. Like they aren't worth anything. People that don't understand poverty, "why didn't they evacuate?" Not everyone has the means to just get out. I just don't understand why people can't be more compassionate to one another

exactly. many of the residents didn't even have a car. It's such a privileged and ignorant stance to be so flippant about their misfortune and devastation.

The lower ninth ward can be rebuild and made a wonderful place. Since lower income people stay their why fund raising can't be done. The neighborhood was poor and people probably was doing things they shouldn't have been doing trying to survive but all neighborhoods should be restore everybody should be given a chance to be better. You accept the poor and rich.

MANY locals said the levees were blew up

Not possible. It's clear case of the govt not taking care of out dated leeves. The sound or bang ppl heard waa from the water pressure. If it was blown up those out of date leeves would have completely been destroyed and not the few beaches.

Wrong!! No levees were blown up. The barge that broke through the levee sat in the lower 9th for a year. Easy to tell what caused it The truth just doesn’t fit the racist narrative that a lot of people want. That barge was right there inside the neighborhood for a long time. Explain that. Here is a former resident that verifies this. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H9nxUt6Bpe8.html

They blew those levees on purpose. Order out of chaos. They create the chaos, then usher in the new order which is what you see now.

TheHonestjbone - Conspiracy theories run rampant and there are certain types of people who are easy prey for them. People said they heard an explosion. Well of course it would sound explosive if an iron barge plows through a cement levee with millions of tons of water rushing in. THE BARGE WAS IN THE FIRST TWO BLOCKS OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD FOR MONTHS!!! Maybe even a year. How can you deny what happened? It was a friggin barge!!! Denying that is denying facts!!!

TheHonestjbone - I recently found an article from the Washington Post that explains the myth of bombing the levees for Hurricane Katrina. A little background- in a flood in 1927, the city of New Orleans DID bomb the levees to flood out the poor people to save the more affluent areas of the city. But they were not bombed this time. This article explains it. This falsehood - cued by inexact memories of a deliberate levee breach in 1927 - gained currency after the storm. Louis Farrakhan claimed that Mayor Ray Nagin told him that the levees had been blown up, a view Nagin felt obliged to disown under questioning on Capitol Hill. And Spike Lee, who would later direct a documentary about Katrina, espoused similar ideas. “I don’t find it too far-fetched,” he said in 2005, “that they try to displace all the black people out of New Orleans.” The story does not stand up to even casual review. The levees failed so extensively during Katrina that it would have taken scores of dynamite charges detonated simultaneously over many miles of levees to decimate flood defenses as thoroughly. Note also that some of the worst-flooded areas, the Lakeview neighborhood among them, were rich and white.
