Border View Farms is a mid-sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. My name is Nathan. I make and edit all of the videos posted here. I farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. Our part-time employee, Brock, also helps with the filming. 1980 was our first year in Waldron where our main farm is now. Since then we have grown the operation from just a couple hundred acres to over 3,000. Watch my 500th video for a history of our farm I filmed with my dad.
I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. Agriculture is different from any other industry and I believe the more people that are showing their small piece of agriculture, helps to build our story. We face unique challenges and stressful situations but have some of the most rewarding payoffs in the end. I get to spend everyday doing what I love, raising my kids on the farm, and trying to push our farm to be better every year. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture.
I hope you enjoy my content and ask questions as you have them. I do my best to answer anything I can. Thanks for watching!
I appreciate you subscribing to my channel and liking my videos. You can also find me on Facebook borderviewfarms and on Instagram @borderviewfarms

Sunflowers,canola , soybeans are all hosts of white mold. Rotation is the only way to reduce it. Conditions are a big factor to. Every year is different. Great video Nathan. 👍👍

Awesome drone shots!!! I talked to my friend and local farmer here. We are about an hour north of Grand Rapids MI near Lakeview. I asked him about white mold. He said it bad here as well. We talked about many of the same things you shared. He believes environment has played a big part in the mold this year. Definitely affecting the yields here. I look forward to seeing your videos daily. Thank you. I appreciate your honesty and sharing your life and farm.

Nathan, White mold: plant your rows in the direction the wind normally blows to allow for maximum air flow through your soybeans rows. That might help and not cost you a dime but some extra time harvesting shorter rows. Just a thought. Best wishes on your corn harvest bro.

Nathan some thoughts on white mold, I grow your brand of beans, enlist 3.3 3.53.7 maturity I'm on a hydrated lime program with the Toledo water treatment plant have it applied every 3 years since I've been on program my bean yield have increased sizable because my soil ph is 7.0 to 7.1 nut are more available micro biology is more active and disease is very limited I also use seaweed humic a lot of biology on every foliar pass usually 3 . Just some suggestions to your white mold issue to try ,works for me!

Could it be that the way the ground lays, tree lines, home sites, etc. that would impact how wind/airflow gets to/through the plants and dries moisture out, thus inhibiting environmental viability for the mold to grow? Might that impact, to some degree, why you see it in the spots you do?

I really wonder if the water used to irrigate those fields could be tested. If the mold spores sit in the soil, surely a certain amount must run off into the creeks and perhaps passed through irrigation, hence the lack of mold in the triangular field that you called out. Can the water be tested for spores?

@rickk6447
@rickk6447 11 месяцев назад
Well two things, I know you look at root structure in live beans but have you pulled plants that are ready to combine? Here’s why this matters, could it be the root structure isn’t getting through the subsoil that’s wet? Also, you should do some research and overlay your maps with areas that get a lot of rain and snow, ponding water to see if the mold grows in a wetter spot or not and overlay your combine maps with them. That way you can narrow it down a little more. I believe white and black mold form with a lot of moisture, moldboard plowing may be the key to all of this helping get fresh dirt to the top of the soil and burying the wet stuff!)

Al your points are excusing your actions. I just know that I had to leave farming because my father and father in Law refused to accept ideas which that did not like. @@BorderViewFarms I know that you do not grow spring wheat, but is it a possibility? No market for it? Is white mold more prevalent now than ever? If so, would new cultural practices be a logical consideration to limit the problem? You addressed numerous plausible remedies in the video. The only one that appeared to have a impact on white mold reduction was when you referenced more crop rotation with wheat. What are your personal thoughts on the financial limits of breaking the corn / soybean rotation to consider long term benefits of a third crop rotation? I am assuming it is sizable to make you hesitant to do it.
@BorderViewFarms
@BorderViewFarms 11 месяцев назад
@coreybrueckner4032 spring wheat is typically hard wheat and not what is used around here. I'm not sure how far we would have to haul it. The bigger problem with spring wheat is the terrible yields. 50-60 bushel is good spring wheat and we can raise 100+ bushel winter wheat

I know my comment about harvesting white mold fields with the combine last helps only if you have a spot or two, not if you have it pretty well scattered. Seed treatment only helps protect new infestation from a questionable seed source. I'm thinking Extension Pathologists may have some WM forecasting models. Great attitude.
