Lowrance Active Target vs Garmin Livescope - Understanding Forward Imaging Cone Angles Pt 1

After reviewing multiple videos comparing the Lowrance Active Target to the Garmin Livescope forward sonar systems and seeing only what appeared to be very subjective material I decided to take a deeper dive into the systems and compare the one significant difference I could find, the Lowrance 18 x 135 degree cone angle vs the Garmin 20 x 135 degree cone. This is video one where we first explore what cone angles are, and how they differ for traditional 2D sonar with round cones to Side, Down and Forward imaging which shoot various styles of elongated cones. We then explore how that determines how much of the water in front of us we are looking at on a horizontal axis and how much difference those cones may impact the clarity of the targets we are viewing. In part 2 we explore the Lowrance Scout and Garmin Perspective modes and what how those same cones impact what we are able to see in those modes.

Guys this afternoon (April 8th) I got an email response from Lowrance's techies and in fact we were correct, the Active Target is an 18 x 135 cone angle. Also additional confirmation to something else I said in this video or in part 2 still to come, if you "google" looking for the cone angle you will get 40 degrees. Lowrance tech confirmed that the older technology, Live Sight, was in fact a 40 x 90 degree cone angle. Which I guess would be like beer goggles.... needless to say users of that first technology experienced something on the order of what we estimated in this video, two times the coverage area got you 1/2 the definition of a given target

Another great video Ken! Having used both Garmin and Lowrance, there's little difference when they are dialed in. The worst thing about both units is watching fish look at your baits without a bite. I think you can rest assure the argument is the one you know how to use the best is the BEST.

I agree that Lowrance customer service is non-existent. I had a graph go out last year and had no luck with Lowrance. Even under warranty they only offered me 10% off a new unit, and that was after wasting a day on the phone. I switched to all Garmin immediately. I called Garmin and within a minute was speaking to an American at their factory in Kansas. Garmin FTW!
@KenSmithFishing
@KenSmithFishing 3 года назад
So here's a question for you, if any of these companies had a "higher level" of customer service department, like a dedicated unit, that it cost say $30 a year to access, would you do it. Maybe it had guarantee of a live person (that knows their stuff) on the phone within 5 mins? Likewise would you buy extended warranties if you could?

What would be SUPER interesting is after Humminbird comes out with their version of forward facing sonar, to get in a boat, test all three using same screen size for each brand, with you and Jones Trolling Motor's best sonar tech. THAT would get a lot of attention and decide true winner.

So if I were to keep my forward range in the 60 foot plus range and simply zoom in on the screen it would in theory make locating smaller crappie jigs casted much more efficient? I'm just looking for some help in consistently being able to locate my baits in windy situations where the boat moves a few feet on spotlock.

Ken, I'm a retired engineer myself. I just like to say that no sonar, side imaging or regular shoots an elongated (egg shaped) cone. It's elongated because its shooting at an angle to the bottom. Take a flashlight, point it straight down, you see a perfect circle. Now turn the flashlight at a 45° angle and the light pattern will become elongated. Just wanted to clarify that.
@KenSmithFishing
@KenSmithFishing 3 года назад
Randy I am certainly not an engineer, I actually might be an anti-engineer as I have a history of taking things apart and not being able to reassemble. However if you go to Garmin's transducers on the spec pages for DI and Forward transducers it literally says on the spec's page "elongated cones". And further if the dimensions are 18 x 135 or 20 x 135, again not an engineer, but those aren't round, they are something other than round?
@txman201

I deleted my previous reply to take a different stab at answering. Yes, you're correct that a single crystal will always emit a uniform cone, and this will be seen on the target area when the crystal's face is parallel to the target area (lake bottom or any 2 dimensional plane in the water in front of the crystal). You point out that the resulting "paint" of the target area will become elliptical when the crystal is pivoted to some angle other than perpendicular to the target area. That too is correct. However, neither of these products use a single crystal in their transducer module. The transducer modules contain an array of numerous crystals placed at different angles with respect to each other. Some of these do in fact mimic the flashlight beam aimed at a wall while tilted to other than perpendicular. The sum total of the effect of the crystal orientation encased in the plastic module creates a combined elliptical "beam" of energy. For application purposes, it is this "beam" that actually IS elliptical in structure. While it is made up of many crystals, we treat it as one functionally, hence Ken's terminology. I believe I have even seen such references in marketing materials for the products at one time or another.

Ok, well I can understand that. Multiple sources, arranged in an oval pattern, could effectively create an oval shaped return. I guess I hadn't considered that. I just knew that any single source could not. Thanks for the additional info. 👍

Lowrance has had a terrible roll out with bad transducers something to consider. Garmin has been on the water much longer and tons of guys have them. They all will have issues just cruise the BBC boards. And if you don’t spend enough time learning the technology it will be tough to benefit from the investment. Ken you may also want to talk about the trolling motor part of the technology. Depending on the brand of TM will dictate the units to pair in order to use all the features networked together.

Exactly. I've been a Lowrance guy my entire fishing life, with good results so far. But, because of their absolutely terrible customer service reputation, unless it is vastly improved and brought back to Tulsa, where it belongs, I will probably be going to Humminbird or Garmin on my next boat.
