My John Deere F-725 mower is waiting for its new spindle for the mower deck. So in the meantime I needed to get my old push mower up and running. It had been sitting for over 3 years. I figured I would be able to clean the carb & fuel tank to get it running again but that wasn't the case. The float in the carburetor had a leak. I decided to just run it on propane to get the yard cut. It was easy and I thought I would share with you how I modified it.
(while waiting for the video to upload I searched RU-vid and it turns out that many people have already made videos of these type of conversions)

Nicely done ! You could easily removed the blade and add a pulley, , and some angle iron out the back of the mower deck. And mount a old GM Car alternator to use for emergency power. To charge batteries, or run through a inverter for clean a/c power. And use the engine exhaust to heat up a pipe for hot water. Playing with small engines is pure fun, and propane stores forever. Great video, thanks for sharing.

Put a hotter spark plug in it and you are basically set to go with no other improvements really necessary at all. Nice job. You can likely mow an average yard at least 3-4 times on a single bottle and sometimes even more, but your yard is not the typical size as most. Check for leaks at all points, but because of vibration, but nice job. Congrats. Learn how to refill those small bottles with the larger propane tank and you got gasoline costs beat by a mile, plus propane is easier on the engine and less of any fire hazard.

Sounds Sweet to me and the Oil Changes will Last Forever as Propane Runs Clean, not much Combustion Carbon...

need propane feed tube as far in as possible to avoid premixing inside airbox and backfire

At the time I was worried about having that tubing in too far and restricting air flow. This was only meant to be temporary and for entertainment purposes. I did purchase all parts needed to rebuild the carburetor shortly after making this video but here we are years later and I'm still running it off propane. (I've been too busy) I did eventually install a much better bracket for holding the tank. It really needs a regulator as it has surging and stalling issues if the tank is more than 75% when going over bumpy terrain. When the tank is above 75%, I have to keep the RPM's lower so it can rev up instead of stalling.

In other words the carb is sealed

why can't the propane fuel line be hooked to the fuel line going to carb and forget drilling holes on air filter box and just remove the needle going to the float just alemnate

I had thought about it but was worried that it wouldn't have enough flow. Probably would have worked just fine. I knew running the hose into the air box would have enough. I eventually rebuilt the carb and installed a rubber plug into the hole I drilled. I do have another air box for it.

That's kool that went back carb and culvert the but still I think there plenty of fuel going in the carb especially with the holes inside the carb don't you think it's a mine pussle

how often would you change the propane? or how long until it needs refilled?

It really needs a regulator to be more efficient. It uses about 3.5 of those small green 1-lb tanks to cut my 1 acre lot (they are $10.98 for a 4-pack at Sam's Club/$6.47 for a 2-pack at WalMart) With the cheap torch tip it tends to waste propane when the tank is full and the tank gets bounced around. It also won't run at full power when the tank gets down to the last quarter (I use whats left on a small camp heater, torch, or camp stove) I have a propane weed-eater/trimmer that also uses those 1-lb tanks and 1 tank lasted me all season.

How much gasoline did you once use to cut this 1 acre lot?
