Hi guys! Exploring an area of the Bages region we found a series of balmas, among them the Balmes Roges and the tubs. The importance of the vineyards in the area was evident since there are still vats in all the houses and in each piece of land. From the 16th or 17th centuries, tubs dug into the rocks with two containers became widespread: one to crush the grapes and the other to fill with the must to ferment. Eventually a single circular or square construction built of stone with a waterproofed interior became popular. The vineyard business spread more and more until in the 19th century the vine fly or "fil.loxera" affected the French vineyards and later the Catalan ones and now there are very few plantations left.
On this route that we have recorded and uploaded on wikiloc you can visit several balmas including the Red Balmas, it passes through a beautiful town nestled in a balma and a beautiful spot in a stream and with an impressive balma.
