good to see you're not a baldie under that american cap, slippy. Shouldn't handle mack as it kills them / just shake off hook if poss or eat it. Excellent eating you know and offsets some petrol burning. Keep the waheys coming bonny lad.
Haha, yeah it's rare I take the cap off but still have a full heed (thankfully). The mackerel thing had been mentioned a few times, looked in to it and haven't yet found any conclusive evidence. Britishseafishing.co.uk say it's a myth...Still looking though, the last thing I want to do is kill fish for sport.
My favourite mackerel is burned in my brain, as while I brought it in, a 16lb 2oz bass ate it. 2 for 1, but it sure took getting in on a 9ft spinning rod and only 10lb line ahhhh.
Whenever you pull a lure that gets bent up from a tight box just dip it in soft boiling water for 4-5 seconds and then dip it in cold water the lure would then straighten itself again like it was originally designed to be. Try it and you would be amazed at how well it works!
Beard needs a trim lol? and a tip, your clothing is great for slim young things like you, but especially in the NE you might find you need bigger sizes up to 58" chest a/. because a lot of guys are that big and b/. A lot of people prefer looser fit, especially to move around in or wear in layers. I've noticed for many years now on most sites the larger sizes always sell out first, and the smaller sometimes not at all. I would have bought a T shirt but the last time I was that size I was 15, then I discovered drink and curries.
Aye the drink and curries have got a hold of me too! 😂 my site should sell sizes up to xxl so thought that might have covered us all. I'll get in touch and see what the crack is with them. You're right about the beard, it has had a bit if neglect over the past couple of weeks!!
Don't be sorry for your "wahoo's"; your exitement and enthousiasm is an important part of why I watch your videos. That, the fish and the scenery; I wish we'd have a rocky coast in the Netherlands 😉
Brilliant session. 3g or 5g lrf rods are my only go to for mackerel nowadays. So much fun on ultralight gear. What kind of footwear do you use/recommend for rock hopping as I need a new pair and still undecided on what to go for.
Yep, balanced tackle really does increase the enjoyment of catching them. Footwear wise, I tend to use Scarpa approach shoes, the pair in this vid are the Ribelle Run and are really comfortable, great grip on grass and they have climbing shoe rubber so not bad on rock too. Also have a pair of Scarpa Crux which I use in the winter, they're a bit warmer having the full leather upper. Not cheap but last years and take some abuse. Hope this helps
..........aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand another cracking video. what drone is it your use, is it the dji mini 2? Yes mackerel are a hoot on an LRF rod, if i ever head to Littlehaven beach in south shields when they are in then i do it from there. little 5g-7g metal jig, wait for low tide then the first hour or so of the tide turning they hammer the jig, fish a cast usually and a blast to go with it. would rather fish them on an LRF, than a bigger rod with daylights. Can probably do it from any beach but its when i go down there with the family for the day as the kids enjoy it too.
I've never thrown any daylights for them, it just doesn't seem like good sport. If you keep them then fair enough, it's a productive way of fishing for them. Glad you liked the vid and the drone is Mavic air 2, the mini's bigger brother ( or sister)
See the rocks are eyemouth at the golf course next to harbour are they any good mate went recently lost a good bit tackle (bait fishing) got nothing.. didn't fancy dodgey climbs as I was with the misses m8.
Another great session Nathan . Excellent drone footage especially the dolphins. My favourite sea creatures by far, never tire of watching them. Stay safe and tight lines. Mike
I was really chuffed to capture them on film, I've tried a few times but have failed to locate them before they get out of range. Thanks for watching, Mike really appreciate it
I thought last year was bad for mackerel, this year was even worse, never came in till begining of June, but most were huge, when they were there, then have been on and off, all season, same as the rest of the fish count. Plenty of Seals, Dolphins and Whales, so the feed must of been there. Lads from down south, have said its been terrible for mackerel, there, as well. Love the videos, and looks like, the kinky lures are the way forward ha ha ha, stay safe
It's been a weird year for fishing, my bass season has been bad for numbers but did get a new PB, pollack are a rarity too. Just hope the cod season is a good one. Wonder if Anne Summers would be interested in a kinky piece of rubber 😄
You need to learn how to pop your line to get the lures out from the rocks whenever you're snagged. Just leave a couple of feet of slack on your line and pull a couple of feet of line out from the rod a few inches above the reel and let the line go real quickly so that it creates a popping sensation and vibrations into the line that travels all the way down to the snagged lure and most of the time it is enough for the lure to be dislodged from the rocks. Keep popping that line until the lure gets dislodged. I find that I am able to get my lures back 90% of the time if it is snagged on rocks. Considering how expensive most of these lures are that saves you a lot of dinero! If you're snagged on wood or somebody else's lines that are stuck on the rocks than it is a different story since they would be 100 times harder to get unsnagged.
I use a Savage Gear 8-18g 7’2 LRF and I love it! I got stung by a bee under my arm pit this summer and dropped my rod into the sea, I lost the lot. That evening I had another one of those rods ordered just because I liked it so much!
@@SlippyLimpets I think wearing pound shop Calvin Klein made the bee think I was a giant flower 😆 Won’t be wearing that again to go fishing in the summer. About 10 minutes before I landed a massive mackerel. I was a lot closer to the shore than a group of other lads out at the point of the rock fishing for mackerel. I got the impression it was a rouge mackerel that outgrew the shoal and went gallivanting on to my Major Craft Jigpara..
I've never hooked into them at this time of year but it has been really mild. Went out the weekend after this, and they had disappeared. Thanks as always David and tight lines🎣👍
Please tell me what LRF stands for. I'm afraid that you and a lot of other people use initials and assume that everyone knows what they mean. In this instance I don't and I've been fishing for about 70 years, sure that I'm not the only one who doesn't know. Suprised that you didn't keep a couple of those magnificent mackerel to eat, they're gorgeous. You didn't need a bag, you could have taken them home in the landing net. A great video, keep them coming.
Hi Salty, thank you and glad you like the channel. I'm using a DJI Air 2 and it seems great, if I was to get one now I'd go for the Air 2 S, slightly better camer and better obstacle avoidance. Hope this helps and tight lines👍🎣
@@SlippyLimpets Thanks Nathan, have just ordered the Mini SE as a starter, I'll get the crashing out of the way with this one first. Keep up the good work, any November Bass vid's on the horizon?
I know Matt AKA Salt Water Angler uses a Mini and is well happy with it. Bass Fishing is pretty much dead up here, maybe get trip down south sorted to try for them, but not sure yet.
@@SlippyLimpets Well if you want some info on some Mark's let me know, Bass fishing is still a go on the Devon coastline, I had a 5lb yesterday and out again tomorrow, to my best mark, so fingers crossed for some beer battered bass for tomorrow's dinner, tight lines buddy :)
@@SlippyLimpets Hi Nathan, been flying the DJI Mini a few times now, but as fantastic as it is, its as only as good as the user lol, my god, how long did it take you to feel brave enough to fly it over water? I still have baited breath every time I lose sight of it, which is the majority of the time, let alone go over the drink
Always enjoy your vids. Fantastic drone footage and great variety of fish caught. Mackerel do seem large this year, even in the south. Really enjoy catching mac's on lures.
They seem like a good size but seem like they are a rarity up here this year. Maybe the cold start to spring had something to do with it. Glad you like the vids!!
Great video loved it looks like a great little spot you found to fish thanks for sharing big like from me bud tight line's and catch you on the next video
Wey great video fella top tips waggle,,,you call them coalies,,,,we always called them Billat,,,would fill bread bags ,, fantastic fun on very light takle,,,love n peace ,,,Carl Fishburn
Things have changed a lot, since I left 27 years ago. Mackerel in mid October! , they used to be gone by early September, Never seen a Bass in the North East. Good for fishing, but a bit of a worry for the environment. Great vids BTW
The change is definitely keeping us on our toes. Mackerel and sand eels are late than ever, bigger bass, but the biggest thing at the moment is Bird Flu, dead sea birds everywhere- really sad to see😔
Thanks for the info. A few people have mentioned it but I can't find anything conclusive online about it. www.brittishseafishing.co.uk seems to think it's just a myth?
Hi just been watching another video of yours where you can't get through the mackerel, noticed that you handle the mackerel before chucking them back in, did you know they won't live for more than 24hrs if you handle them thats why people hold the hook to flick them off, just thought you would find it interesting...by the way love your videos keep them coming...tight lines...kev
I have heard that before but didn't know if it was a myth or not, britishseafishing.co.uk seems to think it's a myth so thought it was OK. Glad you like the vids and thanks for the info
I agree it makes me laugh when freshwater fishing to observe the current fashions, Carp anglers especially, bivvy, spod, 3 rods (never less), boilies and bite detectors to a man (can we still say man?). Now you just watch, Slippy will set a trend and for the next few years you'll see nothing but LRF on rock marks, if only we could get him to wear a top hat?
Allreet mate : Wow! Your a cinematographer , Slippy! Drone shots, dolphins, ocean-scapes , cool tunes and a cracking day’s fishing! Cheers mate! Brilliant stuff - I’m going out Tuesday to St Abbs/ Eyemouth again. Wonder if the mackie are still around then. Think you’re right mate; strange, late, cold Spring has knocked things back. Now, the mild October is prolonging their stay. Tight lines, and thank you again for these vids. Utterly impressive!
Aye; t’was good - only there a few hours before it got dark but caught and returned 4 coalies, one of which was a chunky lad about 2.5 pounds. Not hitting any pollack though - wonder why. Great to be out; saw dolphins too. Can I ask for advice again, marra? I’ve got some time off coming up and I want to get away and do some lure fishing / rock hopping - where would you head at this time of year for 2 or 3 days fishing and chilled out nature? I’ve been all over Scotland in the last 20 odd years up here but it’s always been to hill walk, walk dogs, nice pub, etc - not to fish. I am happy to drive a distance from Edinburgh; it’s always good to get away. I was looking at heading West - Ardnamurchan, or Oban way. Been there a few times before and it is stunning. Or am I missing the obvious on the East coast? Any tips or recommendations? G
There's been a been a shortage of pollack this year, my numbers are well down on previous years. Can't really explain it but hopefully they'll return next year. I'd head up to Skye, the average size of pollack is excellent. If that is a bit of a hike then the Mull of Galloway is worth a visit, the average size isn't as good as skye but the numbers make up for it. I can point you in the right direction for both spots. The fishing can be good up Oban and ardnamurchan but I've never fished there so can't help with marks. Let me know what you decide and, if you decide on Skye or MOG, I'll send you some links.
Thank you Nathan - I decided on Dumfriesshire, around Brighouse Bay and then up around coast towards Wigtown. I got myself a kayak too and had two cracking days paddling, rock hopping and fishing - caught nowt though! Beautiful weather Tuesday / Weds, but not a nibble! I was only using lures - plastics and metals, and think I’d picked overly sandy spots in kayak , and not finding deep water with the metals. Loved being out though… think I need your expert advice on Skye and Mull of Galloway for next time - I’m looking at getting away again this weekend, and most fortnightly weekends, weather permitting. Cheers for any info - and the new video on Cod is interesting as I don’t know anything about beac casting. It was interesting to see and hear the different tackle, rigs and techniques. Keep at it mate!
Eyup Nathan. It says in the Bumper fun book of Fish Facts that the Mackerel moves from the continental shelf into shallow waters around Wales in Spring and moves off again in Autumn. Well it did. I know 'cos I caught it in August. I gave it directions to the Isle of Man where it could find some mates to hang out with and sent it on its way. I haven't seen it since so I'm glad to see you found a few. I'll sithi after, Dave.
Nice session Nathan love your new quick release system for the coalies, lol.ome nice mackerel caught .your drone footage is amazing.loved this.thanks so much .tite lines mate.
It is really mild and you're right about the coalies too, it's all in caught last weekend. No cod sessions yet, I missed the good conditions but heading out this Thursday hoping to find them, regardless of the conditions
Could you tell us the net you're using and how long it extends to? Also mate have you had chance to use any of those baits I sent? keen to hear how well they fish on your bit of the coast.
The handle is the Spro Freestyle Xtender, and it looks like it could be the 3.8 that he has (could be wrong) im looking to pick up the same handle at some point. not sure what the net is. could well be a spro net too, just iv never seen the handle for sale anywhere with a net included
I haven't had thrown them yet mate but will defo be giving them a try and want to make sure I catch on them for any videos. Like @renllek said, it's a Spro Freestyle Xtender 3.8 m version with an HTO folding head. Not a cheap handle but has some unique features like adjustable length and a solid belt/gear clip on them
@renllek You're right about the handle, the head is an HTO folding net, blood value but still not convinced by it. The handle is mint though and got it from Predator tackle
@@SlippyLimpets what is it about the head that your not sure about? predator tackle is the same place i was looking at it too, just have not decided what head i want to go with it. I have a long net already but its a proper naff one, with no folding head (was cheap tho). It will extend to 3m.............all on its own!! So i have had to gorilla tape the shaft to stop it doing that while moving about. The Spro one would be perfect for me with that clip on it as it will hook perfectly onto the d-ring on the back of my Hart Oceanic Pro fishing/life vest, and extend long enough to be able to get down to the water when on the rocks, which im guessing is the reason you picked one up
@@SlippyLimpets yer I'm in need of a decent extended handle for rocky and high situations, thanks for the info. Yer no rush mate all good, can't wait to watch a bit of footage with my own lures being used...well chuffed a channel such as yours is giving them a bash, thanks bud 👍🏻🙏🏻
Great vid buddy. I've been told with mackerel, if you handle them they will die after you throw them back, so you might as well keep em for bait or eating. Looked great fun on light tackle.
They've got to be one of the hardest fighting fish we have, they just don't give up!! I've heard that too, but can't find any official advice on the matter.
Another eagerly awaited video Nathan and as expected, a delight to watch. Love the drone footage, but who is controlling it while you are fishing...... also, what do the letters L R F stand for. Thanks again.
Thanks mate, glad you liked it. I do all of the filming my self, the drone has some autonomous features which help out a bit. LRF stand for light rock fishing and normally refers to short rods rated 0-7g and no more than 6lb braid. Hope this helps
Only fished the rocks a few times. Had some bass, wrasse, pollack etc but moved to Texas 3 years ago and now sea fish 3 times a week. We really do get some cracking fish inshore. And better still all edible. Best move I ever made.
@@SlippyLimpets Mate you honestly would love it. The only times Ive used kures - plugs, spinners etc was when I went piking/Zander. But now 90% of my fishing is using them. And EVERY fish it seems in the US are predatory. Ive not even thought about a freshwater fish here yet. I wish I had moved sooner. Tight lines chap!
Hi slippy. I live just up the road from the promenade whitley bay. Is there any chance of catching anything over the rocks off the platforms there at promenade and rockcliffe? i havent been fishing since i was a kid in the 80's, but i'd really like to give it another bash. think i've learned a lot just watching your videos and the fishlocker ones as well. i dont need to be catching something all the time, but as long as i was in the game, that would be enough for me. what you think mate? good idea? or am i gonna look a bit silly there? ps, sorry i made you self conscious about the wise old owl hoots. thanks for the video 😊hoo hoo!
Alreet Mr. Trance, You'll never look silly giving it a go, that's the beauty of sea fishing- you just never know!! I know you can get bass in the mornings off half moon rocks, slightly to the right of where Dunes used to be. I've tried from the ledges at Rockcliffe but not landed a fish yet. The most successful place I've fished in that area is Whitley Pipe at low tide ( the old sewerage pipe in front of the old paddling pool) at low tide. I've had cod, pollack, coalies and mackerel from there, but it does die down in the winter. I noticed the Slippy owl call whilst editing those vids and wanted to set it out then -don't blame your self- but I don't seem to be able to stop it 😂
More fantastic Ariel shot’s pal and another great venue went out today myself beaten by the dreaded weed been terrible for weed this year on the Cumbrian coast cod just starting to show looking forward to your next outing keep them coming tight lines pal.
It's been pretty bad over this way too, the beaches are littered with kelp fronds at the moment. I'm outbon Thursday chasing cod so hopefully it's cleared up a bit by then. Tight lines👍🎣
Great session, mackerel on lrf are fun. If you don't have a bag to take any fish home you can string them up between the mouth and gills with a length of cord or line.
They are great fun. I could have strung them but I needb2 hands to climb back out if the mark and then drive somewhere to get a bag. Going to keep a bag in my fishing bag from now on!
Good stuff Nathan. Do you ever do any mullet fishing? I'm a mullet fanatic from Cornwall but my daughter lives in Dunbar and when I was there a couple of weeks ago noted some really mullety looking spots. A local angler told me there can be some good mullet fishing in the area in high summer and I'll be sure to pack a rod if I'm up there next summer. Mullet would really suit your light tackle/sporting approach and you won't find many, if any, harder fighting fish.
It's not a fish I've targeted, yet. Definitely on the hit list, I even bought some mullet flies but they haven't seen the water this year. There does seem to be reports of them around, not heard about them in northumberland but they're numerous at Torness power station outflow, just down from Dunbar so no reason why they're not along the whole coast.
@@SlippyLimpets Yep, Torness is a well known venue in the National Mullet Club. But down here we catch them from rock marks and I reckon some of the spots in your videos could well hold fish in the summer.
Good to know. I think I've spotted a few in northumberland, seen some tailing in the channels that are exposed at low tide. I thought they were bass but could be mullet. I'll have another look next summer
Hi Nath, was this recorded recently? I was consistently catching Mackerel a month ago, bit theybseemed to disappear in the blink of an eye with the bait fish.
Up there last week pleased to see those pots r gone catching mackerel myself managed a nice Pollock and lost a cracking Pollock to the kelp couldn't get it out good video by the way tight lines bud👍
@@SlippyLimpets Don't think I'll ever give Pollock fishing up just love the take and catching cod on light gear love fishing for the silvers as well 😄😀😁👍
I haven't, just checked them out and they look awesome. Definitely going to give them a go, I've got a couple ideas to make from work for deeperbwater too
Surprised the mackerel are still around. They were out of the firth of Forth at the start of September. My best this season was nearly 3lbs, some real hogs around.
Another outstanding video Slippy, Went out myself today but was defeated by strong ssw gales that was onshore so gave up after 30 mins, Plus rain was like cannonballs ffs :D
