LS ENGINE MARINE CONVERSION: Installing the Headers

Now's the time to install our Headers. We have a set of silver powdercoated wet headers from Lightning. Because we decided on a (much maligned) carbureted application, these headers won't need to have an O2 sensor provision that an EFI application would have. Follow along as we install the headers on the engine and install the water tree and lines to the thermostat housing.

Are you guys remotely aware of how unbalanced the entrance music is to the rest of the video?

New to jet boats. What’s the advantage to cooling the headers? Saves the hull from being heated more than it should?

How do you get a good working 02 sensor for efi if the exhaust is cooled?
@Powerboat1

The O2 sensor is placed before the exhaust gases and cooling water are mixed.

Is anybody ever going to make a true water-jacketed riser-style marine header for the LS 6-liter?

Does CMI

I've been trying to find an "all inclusive" kit for an LS marine swap. In example: marine distributor, headers, ignition-free alternator, flame-arrestor, marine starter, etc. I can't seem to find a package anywhere. Any advice?

Call Rick at CP Performance 707-585-9871 and he can put together a package for you.

Where's the heat exchanger.?will you run raw water thru a aluminum head engine? Thank you

I have the same headers on my LSA powered jet boat. Also used some of the other parts you have here. Had to make a few custom brackets for the blower belt. Come check it out.

Do you make this exhaust for 6.5 Gmail diesel
@Powerboat1

Negative, these headers are only made for GM Gasoline engines (LS, BBC, SBC)

Seems like the AN fittings used on the water manifolds for the headers would restrict flow. Does the raw water have other path(s) to exit the boat?

This engine was set up for a jet boat installation which only has a single 5/8" hose water inlet. A sterndrive installation would be plumbed differently.

Checking the flow rate and full-load running temps once everything is plumbed in, would be a good start, yeah.

Always install a pressure relief "t". At full throttle, a good jet drive has a lot of pressure, anything over 15 psi will dump overboard

I just became your 2001st viewer! Plus I watched the whole series. Not sure the advantage of that elaborate jacketed exhaust. Also you did not show how you cleaned up that wiring mess to make it neat which you implied you would show. Otherwise I wish there were a lot more videos on marinizing engines the way you show it so clearly and with the idea behind why you do it. I wish I had that guy to help me when I go to do it.

The advantage of that elaborate jacketed exhaust, is that your 8 year old won't end up with life-long disfiguring 2nd degree burns marks on his/her face in the situation where the engine is being installed in an open engine bay configuration. In a closed bay, they drop the bay temperature to a point where the fiberglass hull is not getting so hot the stern of your boat is threatening to leave the party.

USCG regulations require headers in a closed compartment to be cooled with something besides air.

@@paulbriggs3072 Oh. Well, castings only make economic sense when you make a LOT of them. The economies of scale. For low volume sales, weldments are cheaper. And for raw-water cooling, stainless is the material of choice.
