How to check and install LS beehive valve springs on Vortec heads + check for max lift!
Ls6 springs work great for mild roller cams!
An easy at home way to check your spring height and spring to retainer clearance at home, no special tools needed (other than a caliper)
I do own a valve spring micrometer but this method works for guys that dont
Beehive Springs offer great valve control/performance and require no expensive machining to work on vortec heads.
*Stock vortec springs are only good for mild roller cams under approx .430 lift or mild flat tappet cam or

Thanks man I really appreciate that! I have alot of cool projects on the go and finally decided to start filming some of it. There is alot of weird info out there so I'm trying to make videos that I wish i had a few years back when I needed info. Please share my videos and hit me up if you need any help or parts for your vortec projects!

@@cuttersperformance Thank you for sharing!!! I just did my first top end rebuilt on my 1970 chevelle crewcab. I used Vortec heads on the 307 bottom end. I have a 350 in the garage and I wanting to use my vortec heads on them with a nice cam - but I don't want to machine the hell out of them. With this information, I can get springs and put a nice cam in it and really go to town! Keep up the content - you actually explain things so that EVERYONE can understand. I am learning all of this and have been lost. There is a guy locally who I met on the SBC board on Facebook and he has been an awesome GURU for me as well! You are right there is not only so much misinformation but also nasty people who get hateful in a second if you don't grasp the concept they are poorly explaining. So, I tip my hat to you - and I will share your content with everyone I can.

I'm going to totally agree with this statement. And I have over 20 years experience building high performance engines, and so I also know what to look for when people make videos about a specific subject. I'm also the type that will call out somebody when they're just trying to get views but don't really know what they're talkin about. While there would be a couple of things I would add, this video is quite good and quite informative, and also explaining things in a clear way for others to understand. I can only imagine who gave it thumbs down. But then again it seems like every good video has thumbs down but nobody comments on why. Anyways this is a very misunderstood subject and very rarely do I see people cover it this clearly. I'm definitely impressed.

I agree that this is an excellent vid. The reason there aren't more views is because these engines are obsolete. LS is the budget build of choice now and the next generation LT has been out for quite awhile now. The LT will replace the LS and will only gain momentum in the coming years.

Do you have a minimum clearance between the self aligning edges and the retainer/ keepers? Also, if I have to grind/ file my aligners, what’s a “safe” amount to leave on the rocker? I’m hitting now on my intakes, with my new full roller rockers, and my 787’s with .050 offsets, but they have huge alignment guides on them! I ordered some of the .030 offsets, that I’m going to try on just the intakes, since the exhausts are fine (.520 exhaust lift, and .525 intake Summit’s LT-4 hot cam copy Sum-8802 roller cam). What limits do you suggest on the valve tip (intake side), and clearances with the alignment edges? Thanks in advance! LOVE ALL YOUR VORTEC VIDS! I’ve been watching them over and over for years now!!

You'll want at least .055" nubs aligning the rocker to the valve tip and atleast .025 clearance from the rocker to the retainer or keepers

Someone mentioned to me that they had seen a RU-vid video about swapping to complete LS valve train. I don't remember, they said they were the 1.99" intakes and 1.55" exhaust. Upgrading to a bronze 1/2" odd guide for the .312" valve stem, as well as the LS6 springs. I haven't found anything on this. I've found plenty of videos, swapping springs. Yours is the most comprehensive on the spring swap. But I'm wondering if there is any advantage, performance-wise, flow-wise or weight-wise with that kind of swap. All I know is is from what I've been finding in researching, is that the stock 1.94s and 1.50s are pretty much better off left alone rather than going to a 2.02 and 1.60. Have you ever seen or heard about anything about the valve & spring swap (and guide) upgrade?

Yeah man not hard to do, Use a leak down tester to pressurize the cylinder at TDC, then use a on car head valve spring compressor to push the spring down. Then carefully use a magnet to remove the keepers. *the compressed air hold the valve up* Let me know if that doesn't answer your questions and I can do a video on it Cheers!

I just pulled my pressed in studs on 906 vortec heads. I used anti seize grease to lubricate the nut on the stud being pulled . if the nut starts getting hot move to the next stud and let that one cool off. It looked like most of the studs are stake and were difficult to pull and a couple came out easy. do not use a cheap nut use a valve stud nut which is hardened.

Hey bud , I wanted to let you know I enjoy and appreciate your video's. I have a question for you also. I recently ordered a set of the ls6 beehives from summit racing. There store brand and they were way to tight of a fit around the guide bosses. So i ordered another set of howards cams beehives that they recommended for my cam. They fit the bosses with room to spare and the outside lip of the spring pocket holds them in place pretty well. Do you think this setup is acceptable or should i rely solely on the guide boss to keep the spring in place. Probably have about .015 to .020 clearance between the spring and the guide boss.
@cuttersperformance
@cuttersperformance 3 года назад
What size are your guide bosses? A ls6 spring will typically fit perfect over a clean stock guide. i have has a few sets that ive has to take a sanding roll to clean up the guide a bit more for them to fit. As for you new springs if the outside pocket holds them then you should should be ok. A normal spring locator has about .010 clearance. Cheers!
@danhelton1762
@danhelton1762 3 года назад
@@cuttersperformance they range in size from .854 to .857 the springs i got from summit are around .855 id i ordered the other set of howards cams they are .900 id and seem to fit ok just a little wiggle room between them and the bosses but the lip around the outside of the spring pocket holds them in place pretty well. Thanks.

Are you in a huge rush for the seals? I usually stock the viton seals for vortecs heads (stock guides) but im currently sold out. I'm trying to set up my Vortec heads to support a stock camshaft pulled from a 1993 Camaro's LT1 engine. From what I've been able to find, that cam should have a .480 lift. Just to make sure I'm understanding correctly, all I should have to do to be able to support that .480 lift is swap to the LS6 springs, right? I have the heads at a machine shop now for a valve job, and they seem to think the factory springs should work. You mention that Vortec stock max lift is .420, but later mention stock safe max lift is .480; is this difference based solely on swapping to the LS6 springs?
@cuttersperformance
@cuttersperformance 8 месяцев назад
I will post a newer video that explain things a bit more in depth. The stock springs aren't too good much past the factory lift of .420 to .430 with a mild roller. You can push them to around .460 with a mild flat tappet

One thing to note, I did not see you cover in either video. I watched two of your video's on this topic you put out. You can run harden valve lash caps to get the needed stem height for the self aligning rocker arms. Just something to add I know a lot of people shy away from running them but they do work, also yes I know I am commenting on a 3 year old video just figured I would add this for those that did not know.

1st would like to say great tutorial! So if you did some grinding, you could manage a cam with .550 lift granted you have ptvc. Now what I'd love to know and hope you have an answer for is: Have you tried with factory LS1 / Gen3 valve springs? They have a max lift of .520 and I have about a dozen sets. Prob same with LS6 yellows and LS3 blues evenly combined. Gonna be doing a tpi l31 for a project 86 Vette. Thinking I should be able to run a factory cam from a 97 LT1 Trans Am I pulled from LKQ with OE LS1 valve springs on a vortec head. Also, be doing a similar engine build but with zz4 cam and possibly run 1.6 roller rockers with a set of LS3 blues. So what do you think about using OE gen3 valve springs for cams around .500 lift?
