Use your seat bracket to take off the left side cover. Works like a charm.

Hey man I appreciate these videos. I am thinking about buying a savage, in part due to the ease of maintenance and repairs. Why was this engine in such a bad state? I believe you said it only had

Great videos my friend. Just subscribed. I solve electrical problems on my vx800 watching your videos and following steps. I had no spark. Now engine starts, but..... problem. I have 120psi in one and 90psi in other cylinder. Manual calls for 150. Steamy white smoke. Noisy valve ticking sounds and rich running engine. Head gasket?

Yeah sounds like you could have a head gasket leak. White smoke is a pretty good indication of that, more so the loss of compression. Some of the most common causes of compression loss are head gaskets or piston ring wear.

Hey I'm having the same leaking oil in the same spot. Did you figure out what the problem was? This video was extremely helpful by the way.

Indeed that plug was the culprit of the oil burning off, though not the only problem this engine had. Cam chain adjuster flew apart and metal shavings toasted the engine. Ended up boring and rebuilding the top end. Have hours of video showing how its done but much of it is poor quality like this video and I haven't had the time to edit and put the rest out.

When I replaced the plug I used the newer version of it. They eventually made a different version of the plug that is less likely to loosen up. Also sealed it up with high temp gasket sealant so it doesn't pull out again easy. They never did this at the factory and it happens to most of the older savages.

@@MetricMotorcycleMadness I have a 2011 so I'm not sure if i should bother replacing the plug. I already changed my cam chain tensioner. I guess I'll just wait and see if it's leaking oil from the top right. Thanks again for the video.
