At 4:45 Lu X. steps under 550# picks it off the rack, steps back without any real discernible discomfort, drops ATG, HOLDS IT THERE, then stands up and re-racks. No huffing, puffing, screaming or drama. In fact he is smiling. Love it.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with powerlifting, it's just you're comparing the rest of the world with guys who are the elite of the elite, 0.01% freak athletes that compete in the Olympics. Every single star has to align for you to be an Olympic athlete.
You don't need a spotter to squat, just good bar release memory. You see when these guys fail a lift they just jump neatly behind the bar, unlike many crossfitters crushed by their own bars..
how are they able to keep such a straight back when squatting, anyone have any tips? Is that just improving ankle mobility to allow the knee ahead of the toes or are there other secrets?
These guys have the best proportions for squatting: short femurs, long torso. They also have astounding mobility, mostly ridiculous ankle dorsiflexion. Supreme genetic response to training. They also have near perfect form because this is their job, their programmes have crazy frequency so they get a tonne more practise than your average gym-goer.
these guys have more hip mobility than anything. Their knee is not traveling too far over their toes. i believe the hips are the problem for most people that want to squat like this.
Olympic weightlifters are generally some of the strongest guys on Earth. They easily could do powerlifting, but that's not their goal or focus at all. They want to win the gold. They only compete in two lifts, which are the snatch and clean and jerk. I have been lifting for 25 years and I find those lifts to be some of the hardest lifts, even at a low weight, and I lift a lot. They're difficult and require a lot of muscles that I don't normally work. I mean, I work all of those small muscle groups, but not nearly to the point that these guys work them. They work all muscle groups. It requires total body strength. Very functional strength. I totally respect bodybuilders and powerlifters, but what these guys do is totally different. The whole body is involved in order to complete those two lifts. Again, it is the definition of functional strength. Very hard work. It's simply called weightlifting, but it's not simple at all.
Could someone clarify whether or not these two will be competing in Rio next year? By bombing out in Houston did they both miss out on qualification? Say it ain't so!
+Jack Ryan they have other chances, like Asian championships. Considering they have competed both this year, I think they are safe (if China decides to send them)
lu xiaojun is an Olympic champion. had won gold medals set new world records. he has nothing else to prove. tian tao is a young guy he needs to make a name for himself
+All Things Gym So I've finally managed to buy myself a pair, but are these things machine washable? There's no instructions for this product on how to wash them.
Did Lu Xiao do 220 kg front squat - for 2 reps?!! Insanely strong! I have trouble doing front squats with 60 kg :(. If I could do 100 kg front squat for 1 rep I would be happy. Anyone have any pointers on how to work front squats? Do you do mostly 2 or 3 rep sets?
rackholds with heavy weight. they just generally improve wrist/forearm mobility and get cns used to weight. I know i am being vague, but a lot of lower back training to keep your back as upright as possible during front squats. The quad strength will just come from squatting. try not to front squat more than 3 times a week as it is much more taxing on your body than normal squats.

+Rafael David is to compress the torso to create intra-abdominal pressure. That was the spine gets supported from all sides and helps with keeping it contracted.
I get pain in my calves when I ATG Pause Front and Back squat. When i bounce out of the hole theirs no pain, only when i pause. Any one have this problem and know a fix?
+Kevin Wu you can get the original (not hooked grip ones) of those anta weightlifting shoes on Taobao.com, which has the mark "China" on it. The bad news is that you can only have it shipped within China. So you need a guy who knows a guy who knows a Chinese guy
I guess Lu has gold shoes because he's won Gold in the Olympics? He's like the only Chinese lifter I see with gold shoes. The rest of them wear the red ones Tian has on.
