This father is honestly the best father that Disney has made in a long time. I love that he basically adopted these two weirdos kids like "is no one going to take them? No? Alright, they are mine now then."

It's implied that Alberto's jackass father was named Bruno, and that's why he says "Silenzio, Bruno"

while i agree this movie at surface level is a beautiful story about platonic friendships, there is UNDENIABLE queer allegory weaved throughout the entire film. whether or not it was intentional or not doesnt affect the fact that its there. the fact that people are choosing to see underlying messages about of queer acceptance does not take away from the storytelling or positive themes about loyalty and companionship, it simply adds to them.

I think this film can be a queer story while still being platonic given the age of the characters. When you’re 13 you’re developing crushes or you have a friend you’re a little too close to (who you don’t want to be friends with anyone else) but you’re not quite ready for romantic feelings

Why are people so pressed about some headcanoning the movie as queer? If you don't see it that way that's fine, just let people find joy in things they feel like they can relate to

I remember watching it for the first time. Usually I’d don’t cry when it comes to movies but, the ending made me tear up so much. When Alberto learns to how to let people in his life go, (Not only that but he sold the Vespa, the thing he always *DESIRED* just to help Luca.) it hit me so much and just thinking about it makes me sad. T~T

i’m not ashamed to say i cried my eyes out at this movie

while the undertones of """romance""" (for the shippers, myself included) may not be really apparent, what *is* apparent is the obvious tones of bonding and friendship, you can see with our three underdogs, and it captures all the moments of happiness, fun, jealously, hurt, anger, and eventual forgiveness. and i can also understand how people are saying there are queer undertones, with luca and alberto hiding their identity, and pretending to be like everyone else, and it's also supported by the message at the end, how not everyone will accept you, but there will always be someone who will. all in all, 10/10 movie, would cry again

I don't know if anyone has noticed yet, but I would like to point this out because I find it really interesting and cute.... the first minute of the movie where Luca daydreamed to look at the boat, we don't see it clearly but I'm pretty sure that the person standing there is Alberto!! And that is hella adorable!!

I have to say before I watch this reaction/commentary video, because I will ALSO be crying soon - I LOVED Luca. I love when Pixar does a big philosophical deep dive but sometimes it’s so nice to just have a simple, beautiful story about friendship and otherness. Not everything needs to be a metaphysical meditation on life’s meaning like Soul or a devastating emotional journey like Inside Out - as much as I love those other films, the most endlessly rewatchable Pixar movies for me are the ones like Luca. EDIT - also I read that the voice actors were like, recording their parts in their respective mom’s closets lol.

I honestly don't care how people interpret the movie's message and undertones. I'm here for the nostalgic summer feeling. the music and scenery just scream nostalgia to me. the message and friendships and finding yourself and the warm colors and ice cream, they all bring me back to my earliest years of childhood. when my problems were as little as winning a race. But those problems grew, just like in the movie. alberto being abandoned again. luca wanting to go to school but the pressure of alberto and hiding as a sea monster in a world of humans. all of that is like how our worries and problems get worse and larger as we grow. that's where the nostalgia comes from. the conflict in the movie is light and simple, just like the problems we faced as kids. Of course, the main message is extremely strong and great, but all of it tied up together in one big bubble of gay italian summer friendship carefree nostalgia was just perfect. I'm glad Pixar made one of these laid back movies. taking a step back to enjoy it instead of constantly trying to jump ahead. I cried watching the movie. It's funny, isn't it? a bunch of pixels moving to an audio of voice boxes, random noises, and sounds can make you cry. Somehow, it gives you a certain feeling. Somehow, a kids movie can tug on your heartstrings. Do you think there are people who wouldn't understand the feeling? people who don't feel it at all? Do they look at us and go, "That's weird, it's just a movie and they are so worked up." They wouldn't know, would they... I felt free watching the movie. without a care in the world, a young child once more. the nostalgia can replicate the feeling of being a kid again. I have finally grown old enough to feel nostalgia on that level.

I enjoyed the movie, but I was a bit bothered by the language inconsistencies. Like, they can read and speak Italian; Luca understood what "Vespa e liberta" meant, but when someone says what's wrong with you stupido, he has no idea what that means?

26:35 "Some people, they'll never accept him. But some will, and he seems to know how to find the good ones." I know that the LGBTQ+ representation isn't intentional but to me it feels very much there. This quote feels incredibly relatable to me in how in all of the bigotry and prejudice I managed to find friends that accepted me and were also LGBTQ+ as well.

If you want some thing from Disney that is confirmed to be LGBTQ plus you should watch the show called the owl house. it is really good and really funny. And season two is literally coming out right now so good time to start watching it

i just wanted to say, about the gay undertones in this movie, that i don’t think shipping luca and alberto is the point. i think the point is that many lgbt people see themselves in many of their experiences, and can relate very much with what they’re going through (being outed, being bullied, being discriminated against, finding your people, your found family who accepts you no matter what…). this is basically a coming out story, and i think that if you dig a little bit deeper than the “childhood friendship, accepting differences” level, that is basically the only way to read this movie.

I think the skin color difference from Luca, Julia, and Alberto was due to Italy being a very diverse country in regards to Caucasian skin complexion. People from Southern Italy have darker complexions and darker hair on average than those from the north.

This movie is a gem

The clock is still working because it's a mechanical clock. I had one before digital clocks were a thing. The picture in the mirror is Marcello Mastroianni, the famous Italian actor. Giulia can't boss Luca around! Alberto is the big brother! He finally gets a little brother and then she comes along to distract Luca. He's a little co-dependent. Her oaths were a little redundant, considering how many cheeses there are in Italy.

There's a really sweet short on Disney+ about Alberto and Massimo. He keeps worrying he'll screw up as Massimo's "employee" while Giulia and Luca are away, to the point that he considers "quitting" so he won't disappoint his "boss" anymore. SPOILERS: He accidentally calls him dad. (It has a really sweet ending with the message that just because parents get mad at their kids, it doesn't mean they don't love them.)

Gulias school has been confirmed to be only an hours train ride away from Portorosso. They visit each other every chance they get. Naysayers, shut up.

Rowan Ellis has an amazing video explaining why this movie should have leaned into making Luca and Alberto gay. As someone who just recently realized that I am pansexual through becoming immersed in the LGBTQ+ TikTok community, it was hard to deny that everything about this movie is so closely connected to queerness. Even though platonic love between boys is super important, so too is the representation of queer youth (which has arguably been absent from mainstream media for decades, unlike the former).

I feel like their skin is super slick to reduce friction as sea monsters so they can shake the water off pretty easy, or if they’re moving fast above water. Just my idea still a continuity thing cuz they get partially wet sometimes and they don’t always turn

I Love this movie so much! It is for sure the simplest movie Pixar as ever Made but I love it for its Simplicity and Making a Simple story so so damn good! I watched alot and I mean alot of deep Movies before this movie and This Movie came along And I just never had so much fun with a Pixar Movie since Coco... This is just my own little theory, so if it doesn’t track, then my bad😅 I like to think that them changing immediately between their different forms has to do with how frequently they do it. Like Alberto changes between forms so quickly because he’s constantly doing so and has been doing so for much longer than Luca, which is why Luca changed forms more slowly the first few times and once his body got used to it, it became more second nature. You could even think of it as simply as Alberto has transformed before and Luca never has, which I think trace well if you think about it the parents when they came to the surface to find Luca. It’s never explicitly said that the parents had never been to the surface, just Luca. They could’ve gone up as little kids and don’t remember it or have trauma from it, which could explain why they’re (mostly the mom) are so adamant about him staying away from the surface and humans. Like think of it as muscle memory or something similar. I hope this makes Sense.

They're literally just kids having fun, and they're too young to be in a relationship! I also like how this movie made kids act like actual kids, instead of making them grow up too fast like some movies do.
