Favorita is almost the only lead mezzo role in the standard Italian repertoire. In the French repertoire there is of course Carmen. But in operas like Trovatore the mezzo has a vital part but the opera is named after the tenor and the prima donna is the soprano. So promising mezzos are often discouraged. When I was singing I knew several mezzos who didn't want to sing only 'supporting roles'. Cossotto was different. She was a phenomenon. When I heard her live I recognized that I was hearing something special. Pavarotti was certainly good but not as 'special'. I imagine I will get hate mail for that. But if you had ever heard both live you would have no doubt. Cossotto was one of a handful of most memorable singers I have ever heard. She was the top mezzo period. Pavarotti was only in the top five of tenors. Or maybe ten.

Patrick, people are entitled to their opinions. However you belittle Luciano's achievements. For what reason I don't know. It is very difficult to remain indifferent to Luciano's voice and his output, especially in the belcanto repertoire. It is not the first time I notice a streak of mean comment from you toward Luciano.He must have done something for which you dislike. Yes Cossotto was a phenomenon, but so was Luciano. And as a matter of fact he was not nice to me, but I still think he is a great artist. As a matter of fact I consider him and Caruso the two giants among tenors.

I don’t listen to tenors very much but I also wouldn’t put Pavarotti anywhere near top 10 from the sopranos recording I listen to I really enjoy Lauri-Volpi, Melchior and Merli

@@terrance7220 Yes there are better tenors than Pavarotti was. I mention Pavarotti so much because I heard him many times and he is well known. You have to understand that many people listen to arias but not operas. Many care about the sound of the voice and nothing about the music. Pavarotti's great flaws were his inability to learn new music and his rather pedestrian interpretative abilities. As a pure vocalist he was nearly unmatchable. It was a good sized instrument but he was not right for real true dramatic roles. He sang Otello once. He didn't do Calaf particularly well. He also was not very good on stage. In many role no matter what the style he was just a jolly fellow. Vickers or Aragall played the brooding roles much more convincingly. But the public who know little of opera responded to his genial TV presence and he became the model tenor.
