Luciano Pavarotti and Mirella Freni(in my opinion, the greatest Rodolfo and Mimi ever) sing O soave fanciulla from act I of Puccini's La Boheme

This video is part of my tribute to the late Luciano Pavarotti, who as you should know, died a year ago today (6th of September). I'm posting up a few live recordings of his, just to try and get across the true Pavarotti to those who think that Pavarotti's greatest hour was singing with the spice girls. This recordings shows the true Pavarotti, a gorgeous, youthful, colourful, joyous and refined voice. Recordings like this are why I consider him to be the best Rodolfo. His Mimi was Mirella Freni, who I consider to be the best in her role. This recording is one of my favourites.
Rest in peace Maestro, may you sing with the angels.

On another note, I can't believe it's been a whole year since he passed. I remember that day last year, when I called up my grandparents and we talked for about two hours...lamenting. I remember thinking, 'what a pity, yet another great singer gone and no one to replace him.' It was a sad day.

.... of room! Pav's "invan, invan nascondo la mia vera tortura- Amo Mimi sovra ogni cosa al mondo!" is just the SOUND OF LOVE. I am of course speaking of the historic von Karajan recording. I've never heard another tenor come even close on that whole scene. And Freni- just flawless- I dunno what was in the milk those two got, but they should bottle it & give it to aspiring opera singers! LOL! May my Luciano "requiescat in pace." xoxox, ~ Susan

And the Marcello, who we hear briefly at the beginning of this duet singing "Trovo la poesia!" off-stage, is Sesto Bruscantini. An outstanding selection from an outstanding radio performance of this work!

I heard these two at Lyric Opera in the 70s. I saw him in Chicago at least 8 times after. People sometimes forget (me) how lucky they are to hear these people even once in their life live. The house can only hold so few seats.

One of the many who got to meet the Maestro in person, I will never forget his kindness to a young star struck soprano. Another great recording of these two is the Italian version of Massenet's "Manon" - it's quite fabulous & available for a small price on amazon. They are RED hot on fire in that live recording- unforgettable. And yes, Freni was definitely the best Mimi ever- her "ma quando vien lo sgelo" is so "melting" and intense! And Pavarotti is the best Rodolfo too- but I'm running out ...

@madisonelectric I, too, saw both Pavarotti and Freni sing at Lyric Opera of Chicago back in the day - but not together. I saw Luciano Pavarotti in 1977 as Nemorino in L'ELISIR D'AMORE (with Margherita Rinaldi as Adina) and in 1979 as The Duke of Mantua in RIGOLETTO (with Judith Blegen as Gilda), and I saw Mirella Freni in 1981 as Juliette in ROMEO ET JULIETTE (with Alfredo Kraus as Romeo). Pavarotti and Freni were to have co-starred in Verdi's ERNANI at Lyric Opera in 1984, but, after her experience singing Elvira at La Scala in 1982, Mirella Freni cancelled all future performances of ERNANI for which she had been booked. And then Luciano Pavarotti cancelled HIS appearances in ERNANI at Lyric (though he did sing the role in 1983 at the Met). And so the Lyric Opera public got Grace Bumbry as Elvira and Lando Bartolini as Ernani instead that season.....

Simply heavenly... Pavarotti/Freni and Bjorling/Tebaldi are the best of the best. Feel Pavarotti much better as Rodolfo and Tebaldi definetely the best Mimi. Both duets are just awesome, fantastic... tears droping with both!!!

Mirella Freni was (and still is) the best Mimi, Butterfly, Tosca and Manon. There will never be another Mirella Freni, or for that matter, another Luciano Pavarotti.

Would certainly have been a good idea, since as we can hear in this recording, Pavarotti drowns out Freni. I love Pav's sound and his high C, but I would be interested to hear the original ending. I would likely prefer it.

Puccini wrote an E not a high C for the tenor’s last note. Toscanini knew Puccini and conducted the premier of La Bohéme in 1896. When Toscanini conducted the famous recording of Enrico Caruso and Geraldine Farrar in 1912 he made sure the tenor was not allowed to spoil this tender moment in the opera with a final shriek.

@happywealthyme yes but puccini didn't write a top c for the tenor - he wrote an e below. tenors really should respect the far more beautiful original version. grrr :(
