He may or may not have a fantastic future as a counter-tenor - or, indeed, as a Bass or a Tenor (or even as the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers) - all these things will come to pass as they may, but that was NOT counter-tenor. That was a young teenage boy with a late voice-change singing TREBLE, in a duet with his female classmate singing Soprano. And very good they were too - very good indeed - but there was no counter-tenor anywhere in sight.

The piece is by Henry Purcell. Not sure about the realization, but the score is readily available, most likely on CPDL or a similar site.

As stated below, the duet is by Henry Purcell, part of his "Come Ye Sons of Art" (an ode for Queen Mary's Birthday) from 1694. Purcell's original score called for various instruments. However, the published version would most likely have been a figured bass score, i.e., the two voices and the bass line with numbers underneath to indicate the inner harmonies. Back in his time, the keyboard player would have been expected to improvise the part based on those figures. However, there are many realizations published since in which a composer/arranger writes out their realization so that a keyboardist who doesn't have that improvisatory skill can accompany singers. I don't know if that's the case here, or if this pianist is realizing it on the spot.

Indeed, he was 16 and a half at the time, which is indeed exceptional! This allowed him as a soprano to perform difficult works such as Britten's Turn of the Screw, which he would not have been able to do at 12 or 13 years old.

I am not a treblevoice-expert at all, but once I was introduced to this voicetype, because of the famous Northern Irish tenor James Johnston(1903-1991) from Belfast who was a boy soprano himself and later , when famous, sponsoring "Belfast boy" Billy Neely(1935-2012), an extremely gifted treble voice, popular in the whole UK mainly 1946-1950(thanks to James Johnston) I was quite impressed and since then I know how to appreciate this voicetype. This Billy also became a tenor (like Antonin) and did his last boy-concert on Christmas Eve 1950, when he was almost 15,5 (born July 1935), which was already fairly old (I don't keep scores, so there might be older ones easily) , so 16,5 for Antonin is really old ánd amazing. He also doesn't look 16,5 here, I rather thought he was abt 14, hence explaining his vocal qualities. Glad he continued and that he is now a gifted tenor. A nice document for him for later that he was still able to perform as a boy soprano at this age. Good luck to him as a tenor! Best regards from Holland.

Pascal, 2 years later... just listened to Antonin's "Dämmrung senkte sich von oben"(J. Brahms) sang the day before yesterday (18-5-2024) , which performance proved how far he has come today. Absolutely brilliant, indeed a rising star among the (many) tenors. From 16,5 to now (about) 28 years of age, he has certainly made enormous progress in the decade in between. It seems to be a problem most altos around her age face. They try to get by on doing the absolute minimum, and it's infuriating to watch. Look at the boy working his behind off.
