This shows one of my favorite types of antagonists. The quiet ones, the ones that are slow to anger. They are, in my opinion, the best kind of villains as they are the most intimidating.
Fallen with Denzel Washington has a similar antagonist and is still one of the few movies that gives me chills. The “Beware my wrath” scene is a perfect example.
I like how they constantly frame Will as Lucifer as bigger than Crowe’s Pearly. Pearly is shot with the camera facing down towards him, while Lucifer is looked up at in every frame. It’s a good way to establish who has true dominance in the scene. Even when Lucifer is getting up, Pearly is pictured as tiny compared to him.
Till date I feel this is the best description of Lucifer on the big screen, ripped him right out of the bible and pasted him there... good looks, fluent speaker, charmer, embraces the dark coz he was cast from the light
He's reading in the pitch dark (didn't catch which book). It's 1916 but he's wearing a Jimi Hendrix shirt. He casts a rear shadow but theres no light source in front of him. He turns on lights as he moves for he is Lucifer (bringer of light).
brandon samuels No Lucy is not omni anything. Sorry but you lack truth and are led to speak lies. Seek a Wise dome and common sense and realize that you are being thought / thoth for.
Amazing. I do believe I just sat there with my jaw hanging open and a stunned expression on my face at the end of Smith's/Lucifer's monologue about the concept of "now."
This is the only portrayal of Lucifer that has in any way scared me. "do not speak to me of time, demon, it's simplest ebbs and turns elude your meagre understanding. Find another way, NOW". It sounds almost as cheesy as any other line written for lucifer over the years, but Smith's delivery makes it believable. The dude has charisma.
This was one of the most beautiful presentations of Lucifer, and regardless of everything else, which I will not comment on, but... Will Smith's portrayal of Lucifer is beautiful - right up until the director or producer or production company decided to ruin it with that last second of CGI. The scene did not need, it stood perfectly on its own. It was like watching to most magnificently prepared meal being brought to your table only to have the service staff drop it on the floor.
I like how we see the Devil is dressed in modern clothing showing he exists across time. I also like how he dwells in a basement ( hell), seems pretty reasonable. Any one else notice he and Peralie seemed like friends. In his own way he was looking out for one of his few friends.
This is honestly genius. The Devil is often depicted as this grotesque beast, with no rhyme or reason just to do evil. However we often forget that the Devil was an angel not just any angel but an arc angel. By definition of this he spent a infinite spanse of time being the best at fight war. He wouldnt be hot headed, he would be calculated, he would stick to the rules. He also wouldnt tip the balance. Remember his crime was rebelling against his father and look what happened, he would stick to the rules. Furthermore why anyone would automatically think Lucifer is inherently evil baffles me He was an angel and he punishes evil doers that end up in Hell. More than anything he would be a dont start nothing wont be nothing type and a know your place and respect mine type.
From what I understand, he doesn't punish anyone for the sake of goodness, he does it as a form of ongoing rebellion to his father and this scene pretty much cements the fact that he also has to follow certain rules yo abide by AND personal matters between lesser beings is not as important as Pearly wanted it to be.
I find this whole " sympathy for the devil" schtick predictable and repulsive..it is also total sign that we are indeed End Days Saints. Thank God..litterally.. that Lucifer and his " reign" will both be ending soon.. Good riddance.
The coolest part of this is Will Smith's physical body doesn't really move much when he starting to get mad, but his shadow moves the way I would expect him to be given what his emotionality seems to be. Other than that kind of boring but that is a really neat detail
I know it is a broef moment but I was certainly intrigued by Wills portrayal of Lucifer...Calm, thinking pretty awesomrme but not reckless or impatient :3 I adore it!
i watch this scene at least once every year since its been on youtube...love the way time is portraited on this lovely film...how reality is manipulated by forces unknown to the comun human and how the conflict among good and evil the spititual war that still going may be like...hoping to see more movies exploring these possibilities and enjoy how human reasoning can expand itself even further...
Funny how such a terrible movie can have one of the best portrayals of Lucifer in cinema. Will Smith's talents should have been given more screen time. Every time I see him reading that book I can't hep but crack a smile.
Its like Ali. The movie itself was not great. In fact in was bad. But Will himself did a great job portraying the character. Love all his movies. A few nights ago i was very pleased to see where the day takes you was finally on netflix. Another movie he has little part in. And have been looking to add ti My will smith collection for many years
Hmmmm, not the best portrayal of Lucifer by far. The best one is the one by Peter Stormare in Constantine . Second best is Mark Pellegrino in the tv series Supernatural.
wolf2966 yeah. Than people would really flood the comments section with negativity. They can barely contain their rage over Black Panther. This would make their faces melt
Do you even know what the worst "racist" means? If it had been the other way around would you have even brought that overused term into the conversation? It was a funny comment and there was no mention of will smith/lucifer being inferior because of his skin color/physical features. I swear that term is so watered down it can mean anything these days.
@Mon Desire I finally watched it two days ago. Terrible movie with one strong scene, and a few A-list actors who still couldn't save it. It was fun watching even though I still don't understand what message the film had. However, your second question was still valid. How does a movie with so many A-listers go unheard of? Good question.
This is crazy. His dialogue is reflecting perfectly the period of time before God created Adam in Genesis chapter 1. People don’t realize that there was a whole other species of man created before Adam n Eve. I believe the mass murder and destruction lucifer is referring to is exactly from the part where the Earth was without form and void.
It's detailed more in the Jewish torahs and early Bible drafts, not so much in new or even old testament. I mean most people don't know Adam had a wife before Eve.
The end bit of this (ludicrous as it is) really makes me want to see Big Will have a crack at the work of the other Big Will: Shakespeare. He'd be a great Othello.
Being actually satan (No stay night abridged reference). I enjoy playing this particular role. Especially now that you recognized the pale (or black whatever, I ain't no racist. Like lit I'm an ally, but no real knowledge of the black experience) cage of flesh and bone. I mean back then that wasn't your now now, but for me all now nows are now nows. So glad to have shared that with you all.
This movie was set in 1895. 1895 people and during this scene with Will and Russell, I noticed Will Smith was wearing a Jimi Hendrix shirt under his sports coat in the late 1800s. Hmmmm. I guess this could go down as one of the most remarkable misfires of the year...
No, pretty sure it's part of the movie. His speech on time and now shows that he is existing in all of time all at once. So, he of course knows about Jimi Hendrix.
Bro how did they drop the ball with this movie? This scene man, although not accurate, well depending on your religious doctrine, Lucifer Isn't Omnipresent and at best he's nigh - omniscient " Mabey " this version of Lucifer seems more like the twin brother of God, he has integrity, and while in this scene he snaps on pearly for his ignorance and his audacity to insult his intelligence, it also showed that he's empathetic. He was quite fond of pearly, and he knew his fait, given that he is Omnipresent, he's witnessed pearlys death perpetually. Love wills portrayal, definitely needed more screen time.
You know what? I haven't even seen this movie, and it doesn't look too good. But this clip is fucking amazing! They need to make a movie about Will Smith as Lucifer! I mean that alone would awesome considering how amazingly well he played the part in this one scene! Will Smith is probably the best Devil I've seen in a movie in a LONG TIME! O_O
What do you mean 'no one paying attention'? Because 'no one' is talking about it or pointing it out? That's because it's not supposed to be subtle, most people see it and because they're not idiots, they assume that others saw it as well.
Edward Kenway in hindsight I should have written it as anyone instead of no one. Though the idiot part of your comment is also something that with hindsight you might have changed
What I was wondering was where it was coming from. The lightbulb is behind Lucifer, and those windows behind Pearlie aren't nearly bright enough make it
Dont know if it was just a mistake of for effect but the light was behind him and it still cast that shadow behind him. Gave the whole thing a touch more creepy effect.
