I was in the audience for this. I was a freshman on an acting scholarship in San Diego and the school announced there were tickets available for students to go on a bus to LA to see the Tonight Show. Little did we know Lucille Ball would be a guest. Hard to be star-struck these days but she was a true star and we were so happy and struck to see one of the brightest stars. Dr. Ruth Westheimer and Steven Wright were also guests. First time away at college, first semester, 18 years old....what an amazing unforgettable way to start off your new chapter in life as a young kid to see the biggest legend you grew up watching on TV.
Well said She represents old Hollywood and the studio system, but what a gift of laughter she has left us. We love, the whole world, will always love Lucy. RIP
@@jm7804 I didn't mind her on the show. Sure she was a bit of a spaz, but never dull. She was Johnny's #1 guest host for a reason. Well, at least until she pissed him off
Lucy was such a classy woman, just look how eloquently she is dressed and the way she carries herself. So talented and smart. Just an icon to show business. She opened the door to so many women comedians of today
She produced Star Trek, which most don't know, and thus saved all our lives by transmitting positive plans for interaction with the rest of the galaxy.. they will destroy us if we get borg style Beijing emerging instead..
Lucille Ball and Carol Burnette stand alone as the female GOATs of comedy. There are many great comedians, but those two are in another league entirely.
I was an NBC Page and present at this show. Couldn’t have been more emotional or excited. Lucy was just the biggest star ever and such a special bringer of joy to my childhood.
@@BlueSpirit3743 I didn’t have too much close personal interaction with either Joan Rivers or Johnny Carson. But both were pleasant. The truth is I have no horror stories to tell about any stars at my time at NBC. But there were a few I met that really stood out as being extra kind: Michael Landon, Dick Van Dyke and Angie Dickinson at the top of the list. But yes Lucy was most exciting. I think what’s most jolting sometimes is how different some of these people are off-camera just their whole persona changes. It may not even be in a bad way but just sometimes a gregarious person seems more quiet and shy such as Johnny Carson. But they certainly have a special something on camera that lead to their great success.
Btw do you know much about what happened to Joan Rivers after she parted with Carson? Do you know or think 🤔 that there is any veracity to the stories of him giving her the cold shoulder after she moved on to pastures new? I’ve watched the documentary of her life a few times and can’t seem to understand why her career never quite flourished once she left NBC.
Pray this prayer with in your heart. God, I come to you with a humble Heart. I need your help God. I know, I am a sinner in need of a Savior. I confess with my mouth, that Jesus is Lord and I believe in my Heart, God raised, you from the dead. I believe Jesus that you are my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I believe Lord Jesus in my Heart that you are the Son of God!!! I believe and I asked you to help me grow my relationship with you. Amen. Don't make things complicated, keep it simple with the Simplicity of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Believe on Him!!! He loves you and He wants a relationship with you!!! I cannot draw you to Jesus. I am only a messenger, it is God who draws you to Jesus!!! Once God draws you to Jesus because you had a humble Heart, you Believed in your Heart on the Son of God, which is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!!!
I love the way she talks about her son and daughter... and her mother! Nearly 40 years later and you see how much her daughter still thinks of her. It's just heart warming. Kudos to that family.
I can see you haven't ever seen any good comedy. This Ball woman was lucky she performed in a country where Steve Martin and Whoopi Goldberg are seen as good comedians, proves the comedy bar over there is even so low it is buried 1000ft deep.
@@Njoekiezoekie people have different comedic tastes. Just because not everybody matches what you like means they have set a low bar. For you to say that means you have no respect for comedy at all.
Lucy just taught us how to make an entrance and how to know when and how to make a graceful exit. I've never seen anyone exit a talk show like that but it was amazing.

From what I've heard it was just pandering to the audience....which lots of stars were good at. There are stories out there about her thinking her sh*t didn't stink and not always treating people the right way.
@@julemahowardBeing “A Leader” is NOT about being liked. It’s about…. Being “Respected.” It’s ONLY the last 20:years that it’s all about “The Cult Of Personality” and 15 about being “liked.” Liked is fleeting. Lucille Ball True Trailblazer. She created “Comedy Series”, “Variety Show” and…. “Reality Television.” A True “Pioneer Woman.”
Miss them both sooooo much!! I just have to say, as an African American woman, these are 2 women I truly adored all of their work, work ethics, talent and strength. Both very very open minded women. I was watched “ I Love Lucy” like it was going out of style and watched tons of Joan’s shows and concerts in the exact same way!! Both ladies leave HUGE shoes to fill and even in 2021 no one ever will.
Every celebrity of today needs to use this as a training video on how to conduct yourself in an interview. Lucy here displays pure class, elegance, humility and doesn’t let herself become bigger than show itself. Something extremely lacking with today’s celebrities.
Sadly it’s such a different world anymore no real class, just t shirts with writing on them and cargo shorts SO UGLY! So many women wear men’s t shirts with writing on them or Mickey Mouse or tweetie bird... no grooming long ugly hair ... trashy look.
It used to be very common. But it often seemed staged or narcissistic, like "I'm such a big star, that's all the time I have for you." Here, like the whole interview, so genuine, like she really had a plane to catch.
Ronald Reagan got up to leave a talk show in the 1970s after he was interviewed by Johnny Carson. It was between his governorship in California and his Presidency of the USA.
When she stops and stands looking at the audience putting her hand to her mouth. What absolute grace, it had me tearing up. I have always watched Lucy since I was a child. What beauty. I wish I was an iota of her comedy, her grace. Thank you, Lucille Ball, for always being true to yourself and inspiring all of us.
She said it first, and the pause was telling... Loved the answer that she misses it every single day. I often wondered how to 'get over' different nice periods in my life, but you have to move forward.
Oh I remember “Stone Pillow”! I was 8 and I remember going to bed crying and praying that God would help the homeless. I knew then I wanted to work with the disadvantaged, and my local soup kitchen is and always has been the one charity I never miss at Christmas. This woman was iconic. I remember when she died. She is still the queen of TV. If you look at ratings, Lucille Ball was in the top 10 Nielsen ratings, consistently in the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s. It wasn’t until she tried again in the 80’s that it didn’t work for her. Sadly, but, one could always say that by then she had set the standard.
Well, they have timers in place where Joan and everyone else can see them so they can tell when their segments are about to end. I'm sure Lucy saw that her time was about up, so she got ready to leave.
She was right about no one recognizing her when she was on set for “Stone Pillow”. Fresh out of college, I spent three days trying to track her down for an autographed photo for a friend, and when a PA pointed her out to me (she and Gary Morton were admiring high-end jewelry in a window display) I didn’t recognize her myself. She signed the photo (and barked at me for not holding the photo up hard enough for her, which I LOVED), which I still have to this day.
It is odd that you say that because Ms. Ball was pretty emphatic that NO ONE recognized her while on the set. I mean, I sort of believe you but I'm confused about that part of it.
Lucy was right about 74 years old when she was on this show. I'm always impressed when I see older people negotiating steps. She did it in heels with no problem. // BTW: Joan said that Lucy was the "Queen of Comedy." The guys here at the country club lunch gathering heard that and their general consensus is that Paul Lynde was actually the Queen of Comedy.
@@imapisces1 Aw geez. The last day of the year and I get this great compliment. What a great way to end 2021. Thanks. Peace and love, as Ringo is so fond of saying.
@@hannahwalmer1124 oh don't even say that name . I know what you mean but Lucy was a star with a capitol S with class and style. Cardi B, not even close to this.
I love her confidence!!! I love her polite, firm way of ending the interview. A thank you w a hand shake n getting up. We are done this second bc Lucy says so, love her, she is all that and more 🥰 💙
"I Love Lucy" all happened before I was born but as a kid, I watched all of the reruns. I didn't even realize they were reruns at the time because I didn't even know what a rerun was. I LOVED Lucy, even as a kid. I just thought she was so funny but also just an amazing woman. Later I saw her on The Tonight Show and other live shows and I was like....whoa....when did she get so old. Then I knew. But honestly, I just thought she was such a fantastic woman because she wasn't afraid of anything or anyone, she didn't hold back, she answered you sincerely and confidently and she did not care what you thought about her. What a treasure she was. All of those people who got to watch "I Love Lucy" live, consider yourselves lucky that you got to see it all when it was brand new, when Lucy was still young. She was so talented and just a beautiful soul. I miss her very much and wish she had lived a lot longer. She deserved it. At least we can still see her on RU-vid. RIP, Miss Mcgillicuddy.

Lucille Ball faced so much adversity in her early life and then in her marriage but still lived an amazing life entertaining Americans and the world everyday!! Love to Lucy RIP.
I was 2 months old in November 1985. It always amazes me I was alive when this incredible woman was alive . I truly love this lady and all she did . There will never be another Lucy
@@Michelle-pn9xtObjection…Missy did not indicate or imply that she was the only person alive at that time, just that she was seemingly honored to be alive at the same time as such greatness. I move to strike Michele’s comment as irrelevant, sarcastic, cynical, insensitive, and downright rude.
Lucy ! What a successful legend she is. So loved and adored by millions of PEOPLE.. So sad , RickyRicardo and her had a very sad and bad marrige. But. they carried on forgave. .. They Stayed together and stared in their own sitcome. I LOVE LUCY! Even with all their own personal marriage problems...
I was walking down second Avenue one evening and there was movie equipment all over the streets not an unusual sight in Manhattan at any time. So I stopped and asked my usual question at one of the tech guys, is this a movie or a TV show? He said it was a movie for TV. So I asked my max question that I always ask who is in it? He said Lucille Ball. I said really, He said yeah she’s sitting over there. Sure enough like she says in the interview was dressed in a costume of a bag lady and was sitting in one of those movie chairs with the canvas back smoking a cigarette. So I went over said hello and chatted for a little bit and she was good enough to give me an autograph. When I saw this clip on RU-vid from 1985 it got me wondering and sure enough she talked about making the movie.... Was fun meeting her. How can you not love Lucy.
@@PinkCakesandTeayes. Because in her day/s women were supposed to be submissive, barefoot, pregnant & seen but not heard like children. Lucille Ball was the 1st woman CEO ever not just in Hollywood. But anywhere back in the day. OF course she would be labeled “difficult”, aggressive, a b_tch back then. “Thank You” Lucy & Joan for inspiring & paving the way for so many of us! RIP
LEGEND! I adore this woman. I do believe I Love Lucy is the greatest sitcom of all time. Im 44 and have seen ever episode countless times. It still never gets old. Anytime I am sick, or down...Watching episodes of I.L.L. just lifts my spirits. And she was right...you can't top it, so why even try.

A grand entrance, a well deserved and unrehearsed standing ovation! I really felt the energy in the room. It must have been palpable. lol Thanks for sharing this moment between two truly Legendary Stars.
She also was a fierce businesswoman and got what she wanted. I loved her and her sarcastic sense of humor. She and Desi were great creators in television and changed the way sets were created and scenes were filmed. Their use of the laugh track was clever and their show became timeless. A classic.
My memories of Lucy are as a child when staying home sick from school and watching reruns of I Love Lucy and, in my opinion, the greater The Lucy Show, with the legend, Gale Gordon, along with Viv. And then, Mister Ed.
Rarely have I seen Ms. Rivers look at another celebrity with such admiration, she was sincere, respectful and allowed Ms. Ball to have the light. Great interview!
There is no one more talented than Lucy , her shows still hold up, if anything now they take you back to a world we all desire. But even on this tonight show she is an amazing woman, mogul, mother, comediene, and a force to be reckoned with.....love lucy
My friend and I saw Josn Rivers in December 1984 and she interviewed Lucille Ball, Sandy Duncan, Morgan Fairchild and i tbink Betty White. It was a great show! We had no idea when we arrived that morning to pick up tickets that we were going to see Lucy! :) ❤❤❤
I'm now watching the I Love Lucy series once again, making it probably the 10th time over 50 years & still laugh so hard I almost cry on some of the skits. It's hard to believe how absolutely funny the (4) of them together were.
Now THIS IS A STAR. When she just decides it's time to leave at 10:38 BEFORE the commercial break - that is just total BOSSDOM! Ane how she acknowledges the fans both entering and exiting... They just dpn't make them like that anymore.
Lucy's presence fills the room with greatness along with a comedic heart gifted to make audiences laugh! A class Act showing great humility towards her audience by addressing them with a bow. Speaks volumes! .................RIP Lucy 💐...We All 🧡 you!
Lucille Ball put Star Trek on the map. She believed in the show even though she lost money. It cost her her studio. Her pockets weren't deep enough to handle it, but over the long term it paid. So hat's off and thanks.
When I was in college in the '80s, one of my part-time jobs was as a chauffeur. I was fortunate to have driven (around Boston area) celebrities such as Gene Wilder, Gilda RAdner, 'The Cars', cast of 'Amadeus' (Tom Hulce, F. Murray Abrams, and some other actors I don't remember). The last celebrity I had was Lucille Ball. I grew up and adored 'I Love Lucy' reruns, and watched 'Here's Lucy' on CBS on Monday nights (Boston). I especially loved when Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton starred in an episode during the 2nd marriage for Liz and Richard when he gave her a humungous diamond ring. I even enjoyed Lucille Ball and Bea Arthur in a remake of 'Mame' in the early '70s, even though the movie was panned and got horrible reviews. Lucille Ball was a tough broad, a savvy business woman, and a comedic genius . Also I was a big fan of Vivian Vance who had an amazing career outside of co-starring in a lot of "Lucy" sitcoms over the years. She was an established vaudeville and stage/play actress before she even starred in 'I love lucy', appearing in hundreds of plays before and after. I am so glad that Lucy made up with Vivian who Lucy didn't speak to for a number of years after Vivian left her show. Lucy saw this move as a betrayal while Vivian just wanted out from all the "Lucy" shows after sticking with Lucy for a number of sitcoms starting with of course "I Love Lucy'. She wanted to explore other material, especially going back to the Broadway stage in a number of success shows. But throughout the '70s, Vivian suffered terribly from breast cancer and then bone cancer and was living in the SF Bay Area. Lucy did fly up to see Vivian a day or so before she died and they made amends with lots of laughter and tears I read. Lucille Ball in my experience spending a few hours with her as her driver seemed tough, acerbic, and a person who holds on to grudges. So, I am so glad that she reunited with Vivian at the very end of Vance's life.
2 legends, Joan & Lucy! Great interview even in 2021...I still watch reruns of "I love Lucy" both women( Joan & Lucy) were great comedians that left their mark on the world!!! RIP to both beautiful women
Thank you for sharing this truly fantastic and so honest and forthright interview. Joan was a great interviewer in those days, giving Lucy the room to truly think about and reply. Two of the great women comedians of all times, and both trailblazers along with Bette White, another TV woman comedian, who paved the way for women.
@@CPSlayer yes, Lucille Ball was straight forward, no nonsense, did not tolerate foolishness, took business seriously, so unlike the character she played as "Lucy"

I would watch Lucy in any interviews or shows of any kind. What you have is not only a great actress and comedian, but a first woman CEO of a studio in Hollywood……nobody’s done it since. She’s wildly talented and very very smart, just listen to how she handles herself. I love Lucy ❤️ Both of them, the character and the real woman!!
