Did you know that Lucille Ball rubbed many of her coworkers the wrong way due to her strict professionalism on the set of her shows, or did you assume that the beloved comedic actress had been as easygoing as her peers? Alongside real-life husband Desi Arnaz, Lucille Ball became a major star thanks to her performance on the hit 1950s sitcom I Love Lucy. The star had been given the opportunity to star on the series after struggling in Hollywood for many years, and her role on it turned out to be her big break!

Given that Lucille had worked incredibly hard to get to where she was by the time that she became a household name thanks to I Love Lucy, she understandably put a whole lot of work into guaranteeing that each week’s episode was as hilarious as possible. This resulted in the show going on to stand the test of time after its initial airing, but it also caused Lucille to come off as a bit of a monster to some of her coworkers on set due to her demanding nature.
While other comedians of the time may have been more lighthearted on the set of their shows, Lucille Ball was a consummate professional that didn’t have much patience for playing around. Lucille didn’t allow any of her costars to improvise even a little bit and required that they all put in the same amount of effort that she did when rehearsing. Join Facts Verse as we take a look at how Lucille Ball was a monster on set, according to costars.

Lucille was known for being a perfectionist but not a "monster." Lucille and Vivian Vance were actually best friends in real life. They continued to work together and hang out together even after I Love Lucy ended. Lucille's daughter said that Vivian Vance was always hanging out with her mother at their house. Desi was in control of the business side of things which Lucille wanted nothing to do with, she only wanted creative control of the show, which is why the show did so well, because of the creative vision of the writers and her input.

Lucille and Vivian were lifelong friends but if you will read their biographies you will understand that they had their differences at times, and for a while their friendship was estranged. Your ideal of a perfectionist and other artists feelings obviously differ and it's apparent that Lucy could be a monster sometimes

When your female in any business up to the very present day, though it is still somewhat true, if you are simply as professional and demanding as any man in the same position you run the risk of being labeled negatively which would not happen to the nale. Yet if you aren't that professional and demanding because your a woman you will be pushed around and fail. Until very recently all business was a man's world and the glass cieling rarely cracked. Lucy was a pioneer for women that cracked it she had to be tough to do it and succeed. She deserves accolades for her achievenents not negative appellations that men acting the same would never be accused of.

My Mother was a waitress in Burbank in the 50s… Lucille Ball came into the restaurant ( more of a nice diner back then Mom said) , with her Black maid. Before entering the diner Ms Ball asked my Mother if it was ok her maid accompanied her.. My Mother said of course, and seated them in the diner at a table by the window.. Mother waited on them throughout their meal, ( pancakes and sausages I was told) lots of coffee… After they were finished Mother politely asked if she could have her autograph.. Ms Ball wrote her name on the napkin she had folded by her plate… after they left Mother found a $100 dollar bill under the coffee saucer……..Her boss gave her the afternoon off. It's one career all females have in common - being a woman. Sooner or later we've got to work at it no matter how many other careers we've had or wanted. And in the last analysis, nothing is any good unless you can look up just before dinner or turn around in bed, and there he is. Without that, you're not a woman. Burton said a bit more than that. He despised working with Lucille Ball and said that she demanded that every line to be yelled at the top of the actors voices, without any nuance. I Love Lucy really works because of the chemistry of those four actors, and it was played like Vaudeville, wherein actors yelled at the top of their voices and there wasn't much nuance to the reading of lines. Cheap gags and physical comedy were what Vaudeville was all about. Burton was used to theater acting at the highest level. It was basically a very poor fit all the way around. I very much enjoy I Love Lucy but the later shows suck, precisely because she would bring in people like Burton for the cheap thrill of having a big name, whether that person could do broad low brow comedy or not. I am also a fan of Burton but he was more of a dramatic actor. He could be funny in that context, but playing real broad comedy like that was not his strength, nor was it Elizabeth Taylor's strength.

Yes. This is just another example of how the present generation is so focused on fabricating drama, or twisting issues to make that drama. If the relationship between Lucille and Vivian was so contentious, WHY would Viv consent to return for guest shots on THE LUCY SHOW after she had moved to the east coast? There is something to be said about a clash of egos as well. It has been reported that Vivian started making demands. But the fact was that it was Lucille Ball's show, and there could be only one star--her. She was a major asset to CBS in this regard. So it was natural that this valuable asset be protected. Vivian was given her chance at a solo vehicle, GUESTWARD HO! She froze up during the filming because her balance was off working without her co-star, Lucy. That show was recast with Joanne Drew in the part of Babs Hooten, and lasted one season in spite of being a good show.

She was strict, demanding, disciplined, and serious: perfectly good parenting skills, but "funny" was never one they saw in her. Joan Crawford guest starred on "The Lucy Show" when she was past her prime as a movie star. She was insecure about her performance on the show, so she had a few drinks in her dressing room. Lucy went on a rampage backstage, shouting things like, "She's drunk!" and "Fire her!" Joan was devastated. I know that Joan may not have been a very good mother (No wire hangers!), but she deserved better as a famous Hollywood star.

At the table reading for the 2nd episode of the LUCY SHOW in 1962, Lucy almost fired guest William Windom because he wasn't speaking his lines in a loud, forceful manner the way Lucy wanted him to. She always wanted her co-stars and guests to speak at table reads as though they were performing in front of an audience.

@rtususian I read once that the actors who played her children on 'The Lucy Show' were let go because they didn't read their lines or 'act' the way Lucille wanted them to (loudly and forcefully, as you said; a sort of 'house style') so yeah, that fits in. What the boss wants, the boss gets!

It’s so sad 😞 Yet, when they were on the show they showed so much love for one another, but I do believe that deep down they truly did love each other no matter what! If Lucy was truly a terrible to everyone on the set? Then it come from so much disappointments in her life. She didn’t mean any of it at all and hurt anyone. Lucy wasn't terrible to everyone on the set - she kept her writers, regular actors, guest stars - John Wayne, Charles Boyer, etc. so many who only would do tv for this show. I had the good fortune a few years ago to meet Ruth Buzzi of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In fame. She was signing autographs and pictures at a Chillerthon in NJ. She was very sweet and friendly. I asked her about people she worked with and Lucille Ball's name came up. She said Lucy could be tough but she absolutely loved her! She was on Here's Lucy as a guest star and they were filming a scene in a restaurant. At one point Ruth picked up her fork and Lucy told her "No, honey, don't pick it up like that, pick it up this way...". Ruth said many stars would likely object to such micro managing but Ruth told me "Hey, this was Lucy, if she said do it a certain way, then that's the way I would do it! She knew more about comedy than anyone!". And Lucy got along very well with Vivian Vance, they were life-long friends. She got along with Frawley also, although Viv and Frawley famously did not like each other.

His sexual addiction were beyond what was in A Book. 4 hookers at a time? Yuck. While I liked his book and his abilities - his addictions would have turned me off - all of them - the constant gambling, boozing, and sex issues. When I went with my first love for 6 years and we were talking about marriage - I got an inkling that he drank too much. When I attempted to discuss it with him he got mad. In this 30's I learned that he was a serious alcoholic and died at 38 from it. (Lawyer on Wall Street, but was unable to become a partner cause of his drinking problem).

Upon her official retirement after the successful "Here's Lucy" concluded she was often quoted that she did so as the public would not want to see the Lucy character grow too old. An assessment she stuck to and CBS agreed with for some years. It was quite a shocker to everyone in the industry when she suddenly reversed herself and greenlit her return. CBS stuck to the opinion that an aged Lucy character would not sell and passed on the project. But ABC always envious of CBS having all those years of success with her lured her to their network with the extraordinary deal that they would pay up front for the entire first season and Lucy snapped up the deal. The series "tanked" after a few episodes aired. No more were ordered but the contract was honored and the full season was paid for. We all wondered why she'd risked tarnishing her legacy. And then it became clear when Desi passed. His long and expensive bout with cancer cane to light and it became plausible that her return insured covering all the bills from that without putting the original Desilu fortune to be left the children as Desilu Too, in jeopardy. Shrewd businesswoman to the end!

A monster on set because she was tough? A professional? Why is this being produced like this? Was Desi tough? Why don’t we hear what a monster he was? Her show- their company…she has a right to demand certain expectations. (Note that Vivian and Lucy were friends for years after the show ended). Vivian was hired a specific character and was paid to be that character for the show. This episode is ridiculous! This is because Lucy was a woman who knew what she wanted! It's funny how monster is applied to women in power if it was a man I guess it would just be call being an alpha male or being the boss. I don't think anyone here knows the definition of monster because in my time I've met a couple and that's enough and I don't think or that people understand that the formula for success in entertainment is identifiability and while there's no doubt in my mind that Lucy would done anything including gaining weight for the success of her show but this was the 60's she didn't make the rules thought she change a few the 60's audience weren't even hardly even ready to see an interracial couple or pregnant woman let alone fat women star in their own shows - on that note how many fat women today stars their owns shows is still not reflective of a true cross-section of our society even now. It had to be the costars to play second fiddle and the more identifiable characters we see in ourselves it's tough gig but they signed up for it and there are worse things then to be costars of successful comedy the whole country if not the world loved tuning into night after night! Congrats on Nicole playing a more sombre and serious Lucy in being the Ricardo where I got my insight on what it meant to be the Queen of comedy in the 1960's America but why didn't the hair wardrobe department make her look more like Lucy and less like Nicole I don't know!

Joan Crawford, Tom Bosely, Peter Marshall all went on record as not wishing to work with her after one time. Danny Kaye had her on his variety show and boy did those two control freaks clash!
