This performance was Lucinda's third appearance on Austin City Limits, recorded on December 5, 1998, and coming off her album "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road," which re-established her as one of the premier singer/songwriters of our time. Always considered a musician's musician, her songs nonetheless have a way of connecting because she writes about real people and real places. There is a bond between Lucinda's songs and the listener that is rare in today's music, and her songs can suck you up like a Texas tornado and take you to a different state of mind.

This song makes me think of my dear friend Angela. She sadly drank herself to death. Such a beautiful soul to be gone like that. I wish I could have found what was missing in her heart and had been able to give it to her.

Love this song. I’m pretty drunken now. Still not tired, Hungry. But can’t drive anywhere now. To get some food. Nowhere that near to walk. Feck. Lucinda’s a very good singer songwriter. Sounds like she’s spent as much time, maybe too much time in bars and pool halls, much like myself. Like all references to Louisiana as I have a friend there I’d like to meet one day. Lovely woman I met in Dublin a long time ago.

Blaze was an original. So too, Townes Van Zandt, who once declared that his own songs were not sad, they were "hopeless." Here's one, a somewhat obscure duet, that was not at all hopeless.
