We brought Lucius to the Tiny Desk because I fell in love with one joyous, catchy song: "Don't Just Sit There." That's all I had to go on - I'd never seen the group live - and though I expected fun, we also got fabulous. Not only are Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig a winning singing duo, but their charisma and charm helps turn good pop songwriting into an endearing performance.
Both Berklee School of Music alumni, the two women moved to a Victorian home they'd found on Craigslist. As it turns out, that old Brooklyn home had a 60-year history as a recording studio and music school, complete with an old Steinway piano; it was there that they found their future bandmates. Danny Molad, Peter Lalish and Andrew Burri fill out the group with guitars and drums and an uncanny ability to create songs with vastly differing character.
One minute, Lucius sounds like a girl group circa 1961; the next, you could be hearing an Emmylou Harris outtake. And, though only four songs turn up on the band's 2012 EP, I feel a strong album on the way. Pair that with a dynamic and lovable stage presence, and what you're witnessing from Lucius at the Tiny Desk sounds like the early days of a long career. --BOB BOILEN
Set List

First heard Lucius yesterday. Got all goose pimply over the refrain to "Go Home." Immediately bought the album, which is consistently catchy, fun, beautiful. At my age, musical obsessions don't come around as often as they once did. I'm grateful for this one.

Lucius is one of my favorite bands ever, and one of the big reasons is because they become one in their music. At 14:30, you can see the two singers get off beat on their percussion together, while still filling in as what is right automatically. One isn't catching the other one off beat and covering, they literally don't even realize they swayed a bit cause the whole phrase is mostly there. Their music is so natural, subconscious, and real. They are so amazing.

She felt comatose waiting for this thing to grow She's impatient cause she wants it now and so it shows She can't be bothered by the ties that bind her She's united when it strangles everything it holds [Chorus:] She's looking through the wrong end She's looking through the wrong end She's looking through the wrong end of the telescope Turn it around, turn it around She closed the door with the intention of not looking back But missed her step because she didn't have a steady track She can't be bothered by the mistakes she has made But she's forgetting that's what guides you to the rightful path [Chorus] As suspected back at home it grew out of control Well, that can happen when you leave things to a little girl So now she's left without an option at hand She better tend to it or she won't have another chance

Speaking of wardrobe, did you notice the symmetry on the girls' earrings? I bought Wildewoman before i saw this and now I'm hooked more than ever. I love the improvised percussion at the end on "Genevieve", but this version of "Turn It Around" is the best I've found. Love how raw it is and how much emphasis they put on the Ah-ha-ha-ha-HA! Like another poster said... the official release feels overproduced. I don't go out to many shows these days, but would jump at the chance to see these guys perform!

@switchingtime 8 лет назад
+Ian Skavdahl Don't be condescending. Just because they dislike it doesn't mean they don't know or appreciate "real" music (whatever that is), it just means they, you know...dislike the video. Crazy.
@BlueFlameMusicStudio
@BlueFlameMusicStudio 8 лет назад
+Carlos Murillo this is why I rarely express my opinion online. It's not ever worth the potential backlash of random people. However, this band is awesome. I have very strong opinions about the degrading state of music in the culture we live in so when something is good I'll say it and though I rarely would bash someone's opinion directly, sorry I dare make a negative comment about a few virtual thumbs.
@switchingtime
@switchingtime 8 лет назад
+Ian Skavdahl Oh, good lord. This band IS awesome and I feel strongly about that, but you don't need to judge people for, as you say, a few virtual thumbs down. They dislike it and they have the right to express that opinion; that's what the dislike button is for. I think you are one of many people who completely misinterpret the current state of music to be "whatever trash I hear on the radio" versus what's actually out there. Listen to Vintage Trouble, or White Denim, or Mother Falcon, or Jonathan Tyler, or any other number of relatively small artists who don't get nearly the attention they deserve because people throw their hands in the air and say, "Good music is all but gone! It's either Miley Cyrus or Jimmy Hendrix, and I know which one I'M going with!" instead of looking for good things. Also, if you can't handle someone disagreeing with you because you're being judgmental, maybe commenting online isn't the best idea.
@BlueFlameMusicStudio
@BlueFlameMusicStudio 8 лет назад
+Carlos Murillo I had no intention of coming off as down right judgmental. I very much doubt you can pin me down in the "one of many people" category, nor do I really want to get into an argument with a stranger on RU-vid over differing opinions on what being judgmental really looks like. It's not that hard to make an initial assessment, click the thumbs down and not give something a chance. If I had just expressed that I liked this group that would have been better in your eyes I suppose. I feel no need to apologize for defending an artist from a world that finds if very easy to bash on things because they don't understand. Maybe I just disagree with the existence of the thumbs down button in general. Who knows.
