They had so many poker pros consult for this movie and yet somehow this absolutely ridiculous scene made it into the movie. If you want to make a point about being prudent and responsible with your bankroll, wouldn't it make far more sense for the kid to make a giant, reckless bet with the open ended straight flush draw AGAINST his dad's set, and just brick it? The hand would have made a lot of sense if the hands were reversed, but in this scene it's absolutely stupid for the guy to call when he's a 2:1 dog and tell his son he's being reckless, lmao.
@cocourth5611
@cocourth5611 Год назад
I think the prudent thing that his father was referring to is Huck's lack of bankroll management and that since he's playing with scared money with small stack, his father was making fun of him and giving him an option to pull it back.
@dcworld4349
@dcworld4349 12 дней назад
@@cocourth5611 But then you reflect that in the scene by having his father say that he had been noticing his sons absence from the bigger ponds lately, risking all that hard work with the tournament coming up is reckless or something to justify it. Cause as is the scene just comes across as his father being ready to gamble because he has the money to loose. The only way this scene makes sense at all is if he started all that talk because he cared more about getting a chance to win the ring than he cared about losing the money. Something they give the impression that he's got plenty of. Which is fine, I think that is a possible read on the scene. But the entire movie shows just how much of a competitive streak he has against his son and they have him luck out far too often rather than out play him.

Actually Duvall is correct. He knows Huck doesn’t have the bankroll to play in this game, it’s actually his entire bankroll and you should never play with more than 5% of your bankroll. While he is a favorite he should have tried to control the size of the pot.
@cocourth5611
@cocourth5611 Год назад
Wrong. On the turn, Huck made a right decision to shove all in. If he doesn't have fold equity since his father is gonna call him down all day, then this is the best opportunity for Huck to double up. I'm stacking here all day. Bankroll Management, yes, Huck should have one since he doesn't. But as long as you play within your bankroll management, Decision here is shove. Whether Huck is playing with his entire bankroll or if he's a millionaire, should not change the decision of shoving. This kind of hand is standard.

He can afford to make this call and lose over and over and still be prudent because he has more than the bankroll required to sit in that game and lose. Son has every dime on the line at that point. He goes for value on that set when the dad warns him he gots the money to call him and lose and still go after him again and again until daddy has it all. If that happens he can’t play anymore. Daddy tells him I made you a price now just call and see if hits so you make money and u can fold if I get there and save money . 99 wants it all . Does not care about the River. Just wants all the value now but son does not have the bankroll to do that and the dad is rubbing that in his face . With his chip stack, he shouldn't have gone all in. He would need more chips to really threaten Duvall's stack. Being short stacked, just calling on the turn would have been better. It's not about the fact that he has the best hand on the turn. Duvall isn't going to fold with a straight draw and possible flush too because he has the chips to take the risk and likes to take those kinds of risks. Brutal river card.
@ZToxLives
@ZToxLives 3 года назад
He doesn't want a fold anyway so it doesn't matter how many chips he has. He has the nuts. When you have the nuts with 1 card to go generally speaking you're going to want to get as absolutely many chips in that pot as you possibly can. If he just calls and the river is a blank now he doesn't get paid so he actually loses value by just calling.

@@jasonleetaiwan absolutely he was breaking a Cardinal rule of poker which is never putting your whole bankroll on the table so money management wise yeah he was not being smart but going all in was the right play.

After that 'pays to be prudent' speech, Huck should've told him "nice suckout a-hole". Would've been much more realistic if Huck had an overpair like 10-10 and LC had a pair plus his draws. You could make the scene about Huck getting overly greedy with a marginal hand like one pair vs. the freaking nuts. If that were me and LC showed me his hand before my action, it's an insta-call. Would've been funny if one of the other players called the clock on them for the drawn out banter. Put Tony G. in that game, he'd do it LOL.

If i knew My opponent had 6d5d on that board, I would take JdTd Over 9s9h, rather be a 80% favorite than a 70% favorite. The extra 10% edge duvall had was why he won in this specific situation

If you absolutely know he has a set its a bad call, your only 30% chance to win vs a set, not knowing what they have you have to call the combo draw probably, but if they show their hand and show the 99s then calling is still ok just gambly because its a monster draw, its just a cooler board where the money is probably going in so its kind of an asshole move to taunt the 99s like that, the 99s want the money in the middle regardless, if he loses thats poker

The Drama of Rock n Roll He tryin' to teach his kid money management. Don't bet all you have on a 70% bet if you have 30% chance to go completely broke. Because then you are out of the game. It doesn't matter how good you are if you'r not even in the game any more.

Doyle Brunson consulted on the poker scenes in this film so that they would come across as accurate. While they aren't perfect they're, by far, the closes that any film has ever come to pure authenticity. They even put 4 well known poker pros (Barry Greenstein, Sam Farha, Chau Giang, Jason Lester)at this table without telling anybody who they were. They left that for the true poker aficionados as nothing more than an Easter egg.
