lucy played this when she opened for Mitski in central park a couple years back. she asked the crowd not to film it-to my knowledge no one did. i was crying in the front row. i have been waiting for this to come out ever since.

the subtle details of this song reveal so much. “your dad has come to town, he’d like to meet.” as in- he’s not calling to ask, or to tell them that he’s coming, he already showed up unannounced. this song does a very good job of illustrating the perspective of loving someone who’s been through shit. you don’t have to know every single detail to know how much this has impacted the person you love. it’s a level up from “i’d help you bury a body, no questions asked.”

Thank you for the lines "you two are connected by pure coincidence Bound to him by blood, but baby, it's all relative". It's a comforting thought for me, and I'm sure many people who had childhood trauma would find this relatable. We are all our own person no matter who we share our genes with, and yes, the apple can fall far from the tree and we are all worth loving 🖤

The first time I heard this song, it popped up on Spotify while I was driving and I thought, "What is this?" I had to start it over. It made me cry and I had to pull my car off the road. I've never had such a visceral reaction to a song.

This song crushed me when I first listened carefully to the lyrics I am nineteen this year I am exactly five-eight My dad used to send me stuff at my birthday but we never talk I last saw my dad when I was in elementary school, I forgot which year, but I skipped fifth grade so that wasn't it All throughout my childhood people told my mom that I looked like my dad This song validated so many of the negative feelings I've had towards my dad for cheating on my mom and not caring about me. I am lucky to have gradually washed away the sense of obligation for holding a decent attitude towards someone simply because they contributed to half my DNA. Lucy, I'm not sure if you will ever read this, but I need to write it down anyways. I was severely abused by my biological Father as a kid, but I was doing great and (slowly) recovering..... then COVID hit. It's been nonstop waves of depression, broken up only by flashbacks and panic attacks from the C-PTSD. Although my friends know what I've been through, I've pushed them all away this year. The abuse taught me that being vulnerable is a weakness for monsters like my Father to exploit, so I haven't properly talked to anyone in far too long. But one of my oldest friends just sent me this song, and it made me burst into tears. You're song is exactly what I needed to hear from them. I just know that they're telling me they get it, that they want to be here for me, that they are on my side despite everything.

This is what I want to call the Chosen Family by Rina Sawayama of 2021. This song is able to balance it's universality and encapsulate it in a very specific yet very again, universal manner in it's core. The amount of empathy and understanding of the pain expressed in these songs makes them perfect as some of the best anthems I have ever heard in my life and just.....thank you Lucy. Just thank you.

It hurts because the pain is shared. "I will kill him." Her voice sounds a bit unsteady, shaky perhaps? The silent rage wrapped in those syllables show the self control you'd feel every time you encounter this kind of hellish presence. I have so many thoughts, because I can relate. I wish I was lucky enough to grow up without one parent, and the same goes to loved ones. Blood doesn't mean shit, the fact it isn't spilled is what matters. You're entitled to your feelings, you needn't give anyone shit because of some fucking title they think they get to have by default. You earn someone's trust, and you did everything in your power to lose something verily precious. The audacity I have witnessed from relatives is amazing, for how stupid they can be.
