Watch as the Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson performs the theme from The Mandalorian. The Mandalorian is streaming on Disney+. Directed by Isaac Ravishankara.
In my opinion, The Mandalorian soundtrack was the most important in Star Wars history since the first movie. John Williams is leaving the franchise, and anyone who tries to be like him is only going to fail. The Mandalorian was the first SW OST to take on its own style and run with it. It took me some adjusting but now I’m absolutely in love with this OST. I believe he’s paved the way for more unique and interesting OSTs in Star Wars films, so that composers don’t have to be tied down just trying to replicate John Williams masterpieces.
I am one of the kids who grew up on the originals. Watching the Mandalorian 40 years later....makes me feel like a child again. I still remember the joy of the opening scenes because we waited...4 YEARS!!!! for George Lucas to make a new Star Wars movie back then.
@@elrichgomes4690 Haha yes. Maybe he means 40 years after he was born. And that the prequel trilogy films were released three years apart from each other, not four. I was one of the kids who grew up with the original trilogy. So after ROTJ, we had to wait SIXTEEN years for a new movie. Those were the dark times.
Yep. He's done Films: - Marley & Me (2008) - Jennifer's Body (2009) - Fruitvale Station (2013) - We're the Millers (2013) - Creed (2015) - Black Panther (2018) - Venom (2018) - Creed II (2018) - Tenet (2020) TV Shows: - Community (2009-2015) - Happy Endings (2011-2013) - The Mandalorian (2019) Childish Gambino Music (Producer): - Camp (2011) - Because the Internet (2013) - Awaken, My Love! (2016) - 3.15.20 (2020) This is just the most well-known of his work.
I wasn’t alive when John Williams was rising I wasn’t old enough to follow the riser of Hanz Zimmer At 12 years of age I’m perfect to witness the rise of Ludwig Goransson
It's probably the best theme of any show or soundtrack ever. He embodied the character of the Mandaloroan and the whole sequence of the show in this piece. Amazing
This guy went from producing hip hop and electronically heavy tracks in music to creating an incredibly memorable score for one of the best tv series on Disney plus. Mad respect for this genius!!
It's a good track but I feel the show has so little to do with star wars and that's what makes it good. This song doesn't scream star wars it screams adventure.
@@antonov5428 i think this song is perfect for The Mandalorian, but not star wars in general. It has some kind of wild west cowboy theme but also has a star wars vibe in the song.
I think it's because of the diversity, the combination between more vintage/western sounds with modern ones, which perfectly represents Star Wars. I'm in love with this soundtrack!
@@jamilecrocodile718 Definitely the diversity. It's oddities in instrument choices matches perfectly with the alien inhabited universe they all live in. I love a bombastic Williams score for the main 1-9 episodes (including Rogue 1) but "This is the Way" for standalone shows like this. Now if they could just bring in Bear McCreary somehow to the Star Wars Universe......
I think its because the grand, orchestral scores from the likes of the great John Williams have always been for "STAR WARS THE MOVIES". On the other hand this score feels like it belongs to the Star Wars Universe. And it definitely hits differently.
I thought this would be like a documentary of Ludwig breaking down the music, but instead its just 3 and a half minutes of him vibing I'm fine with that, you do you
Search youtube for "How 'The Mandalorian' Score Found The New 'Star Wars' Sound" the video is on Variety's channel. He breaks it down in this video, in the same sort of style as Genius' "Behind The Beat" videos.
The Mandalorian is essentially a wild west film set in space, and the show has portrayed Mando in a very western/cowboy/ranger style, but if it weren't for Göransson's score then I don't think the atmosphere would have never been as clear as it is now. He really created something amazing!
In my opinion this is one of the best theme songs of all time. For his advanced mind this is perhaps just a succinctly written song, for me it is a life success. 4 minutes of bundled completion. So perfect.
I agree. As amazing as John Williams work is, this is actually better music and much more transformative and emotional. Together though they are a pairing for the ages. You kind of need both to make a complete piece.
As a musician myself listening to the Mandalorian soundtrack this popped into my mind: The last composer who was able to unfold simplicity to such beautiful complexity was Ludwig van Beethoven. All these ornaments, all these hints, enriching and never destroying, supporting a western-style space opera, are simply wonderful. It supports the story and it's standing for itself. Funny thing is that John Williams with his incredibly creative melodies is truly the Mozart of film music. Ludwig "van" Göransson is a worthy successor.
NO. Beethoven was deaf when he wrote the last piece. Probably had a rough life. This guy plays drums in his pyjamas and has WAAAAAAYYYYYYYY better life and musical conditions.
I think the score for The Mandalorian works so well is because it does not rely on any John Williams work and is its own thing. Its a breath of fresh air in Star Wars much like the show.
uhmmmm ... your comment is true but also unfair ... I think both are excellent geniuses on their way. Also, it is unquestionable the influence of J.W. on this young musician work. As a matter or fact i grew up with J.W. music (I am an old dude) and i LOVE the work of Ludwig too !!!! Took me back to me the original saga this mandelorian !! Love it !
@@perrooceaniko2005 well yes but what jtjr is trying ti say is that Ludwigs work is great because it can stand on its own. Some pieces are influenced by Williams because theyre used at times ehere the story fits into the greater universe of Star Wars, but even then its still a breath of fresh air in a franchise that normally is dominated hy Williams made work. Williams pieces are terrific but even then we still want new now and then
@@baccaismemebob2603 anyway my friend, both are amazing. .... Ludwing has a wonderful composition here ... we all wish more of this in the future and J William.... he is already a legend.
Ludwig Goransson is probably our next great composer/producer. Dude is mad young and is producing some of the best sound in pop culture left and right. Hip-Hop, pop music, jazz, Movie and tv shows soundtracks... Insane talent.
@@daha9546 he is young implies that he has a lot of time to further enhance his talent and build his name in the industry ( he already has plenty of them )
Awe inspiring! Not many artists can step into the shoes of a legend and come away with a piece of work just as memorable as the legend's original. What a talent!
The main theme (Guitar) is so fitting for the show, it really captivates the "Lower decks" feeling. The stakes are lower, but the personal threat is greater. BUT THEN THE ORCHESTRAL FANFARE COMES!!!! IT BLASTS LIKE A STORM! I CRY EVERY TIME I HEAR IT! IT'S SO TRIUMPHANT! And then it simmers down again, back into the shadows.
It's actually hard to say. Kevin Kiner, John Powell, Michael Giacchino have amazing Star Wars Scores too. But the one thing that separates them from Ludwig is that he never used the force theme or a familiar them from star wars. The entire series music was his own, he never mixed in a Familiar Star Wars theme. That's why when hearing his theme for the First time it was so different, and it took some time to get used to because it almost didn't even feel like a star wars theme.
@@CaughtInTheLoop you are a mandolorian is my favourite track.its just so good.ive annoyed my wife with playing it constantly Doesnt help that I patrol around the house listening to this with a star wars nerf gun and wearing a poncho telling my kids"i can bring you in warm or I can bring you in cold" I never grew up😂
@@kryoboy36 Haha that's awesome! Yeah that is one of my favorite tracks as well. I also love the tracks "Jawas Attack", "Bounty Droid" and "Training the Plebs"
@@CaughtInTheLoopyeah it's great for all kinds of reasons.now I actually win arguments with my wife by ending with "I have spoken" if the kids are misbehaving I direct them to their room by saying "this is the way" this show is instantly quoteable. Star wars binding us,penetrating us,surrounding us since 1977🤣🤣🤣
the first time I heard him do anything was on childish gambino's redbone and that instantly made me a fan! I loved how he brought back 70s R&B vibez, but listening to black panther and and mando made respect this man so much he has also worked in hip-hop! this dude is so multi genre!!!
I'm surprised you like the show, after Last jedi and TCW I thought you and the rest of the Council gave up on Star Wars entirely, to be honest the old EU books like Bounty Hunter and the Jango fett Saga were more interesting, along with the KOTOR Mandalorian wars.
@@davidonyt2298 WIlliams score deserves to be in the OG trilogy and the prequels, movies that actually felt like Star Wars. This is the music new-school star wars, music that represents what Star Wars was and will be, the sequels should be left behind to gather dust.
Yeah the score is good but it isn't the only thing that ensures the shows success. Some really talented people brought this together it's a team effort
Agreed. The art story boards were such an incredible touch. I look forward to the end of every episode. Also to note what differences exist between the art and live action.
This is so much fun to watch. I teach elementary music class and my students are going to love this! Thank you for taking us through the process of layering the instruments to produce the final sound. This is one additional thing I love about my job, introducing different artists/ composers to my students!
I love how the music is fresh, western-like and still honors the legacy of John Williams. I'm in love of the Mandalorian theme. Very Morricone in my perspective.
I was thinking that they must be shot this "music video" inside the LED cage they used for Mandalorian and LO AND BEHOLD! They actually did. I'm still amazed by these piece of tech.
They are using this amazing technology on the kenobi series too. I didn't even notice how seemless the backgrounds were.21st century background projection This is the way
I remember the day after the first episode came out, I listened to this song on a loop as I walked around my college campus. When I was leaving one of the dining areas, I held the door open for someone behind me. The song was at 1:34 as I walked away acting like I was a noble gunslinger that saved a small western town from bandits. Hadn’t felt that badass in years.
His ability to stray from the classic Star Wars score by John Williams and going into something completely different while still maintaining the spirit of Star Wars with an added western feel is just incredible!!!
Yeah me too. We have seen Videos dedicated to Star wars Composers Explaining how they composed their music. But we never actually seen a Actual Music Video from Star Wars. The Cinematography and Editing is this video is so amazing and they even took the advantage of using the tech from the Mandolarian like the Background Screens. Star Wars really should make more Music Video. Their Expertises in making Films really helps alot in making a good Music Video.
@@prestonfernandes2071 this was clearly in the works during production, there were clips in the BTS of Mando showing Ludwig on some of these sets, now it makes sense, while the sets are up in the volume, shoot a few different takes of him performing the song and piece it together at the end! Freaking awesome to see.
@@terone those are music montages. This was specifically filmed during production and edited to be a music video you'd see released from an artist. I adored those videos during my childhood, but no this is different, it's legitimately a music video.
@@aathmpsn Montage music videos made from existing footage are legitimately music videos. What you mean is: This has original footage shot _for_ the music video. (And that's still not a first for Star Wars.)
@@AngeloBarovierSD sure, they might be categorized similarly, but you said it, this is the first original music video. Which is my point, I never thought I'd see them PRODUCE a music video. Those prequel montage videos are incredibly emotional and impactful, arguably more so than this, but I'm saying I never thought I'd see them produce a music video you'd end up seeing on VEVO or something. But man, this title is a horrible misrepresentation. I thought this was like an interview or something hahah.
For those interested, Disney Plus has a series that goes behind the scenes of Mando season 1 and there was an episode dedicated to the music alone. It’s an excellent watch, either episode 6 or 7.
This theme has like everything in it. A bit of Western, a bit of a march kind of feel for Mando's warrior heritage, Star Wars classic fanfare kind of thing, a bit of sci-fi in the synths. Such amazing work by everyone involved in this show
I love how he went for his own thing, taking inspiration of people like the master Ennio Morricone instead of copying John Williams style. Almost every other composer that was tasked with creating an original Star Wars score tried to copy Williams and just ended up sounding like a downgraded version of what Williams could have composed. This theme, on the other hand, feels very original, fresh and still very appropriate for a Star Wars show. I love it.
But the horns in the climax are clearly inspired by Williams. Thats what makes it so great. He made Star Wars music and made it his own while honoring the past. So good.
Yeah it's basically impossible to 1-up John Williams. Alan Silvestri could probably get close. This guy was smart enough to go in a different direction.
I've enjoyed every new piece of starwars filming media since TFA back in 2015. The music especially. The music for the mandalorian was an epic score of Western and electric sounds. I love it
