For anyone who doesn't know, Nick is the drummer for the bands, Spock's Beard, as well as Big Big Train. He's also played with Tears for Fears and Genesis. He is 100% the real deal. And yes, Sweetwater is very lucky to have him!

These drums sound great to my ear & no need to spend any more money on more expensive kits. Spend the rest of ur $ on good cymbals & you've got a pro sounding kit. I've been buying drums since 1974 & I currently own Gretsch USA Custom, Yamaha Recording Custom, Ludwig Classic Maple & others & recently sold Tama Starclassic. They all sound great & so do these. You could take these NeuSonics with good cymbals into a prof recording studio and make a record with any band & NOBODY will know the drums only cost $999.

Hey Nic. That's what dedication gets you. Man your getting better Everytime I see you. And you do know your drum kits. I like the way you play most all the drum sets. Your great at matching drum heads and using using the right microphones. It just makes sense the way you produce all your videos. I made a suggestion to one of the other drum company's out there that they might want to look at a few of your video drum set production's. Ohhhhhh boy did I get an ear fulll. Well ya live n learn. I won't be trying to give anymore advice. But I will continue to watch and learn from you Nic. You do an amazing job. Always my good complements to you and all the help at Sweetwater. Thanks a bunch. But think about the fact that you’re getting an American made, somewhat hand made, drum set from Ludwig. Other drums in this price point are mainly mass produced and made in China.

drumfanatik316 I definitely can understand that argument if “American Made” is something that’s really that important to somebody. On the flip side of that argument, I own the Mapex Armory myself, which is a phenomenally built 6 Piece kit that comes with a snare of your choosing AND costs $100 less than the Neusonic 3 piece shell pack. There’s a lot of give and take and subtle variance on the drum market, and the fact that the shells are made in America definitely isn’t something that tips the scale that much more for me in comparison.

Christian Baumgartner I agree with you whole heartedly. I too owned a Mapex Armory kit and I regret getting rid of it, but it was for a worthy cause. That being said the American made vs. China made drum sets isn’t really a big factor for myself either. I own a DW Design Series, made in China, and a Tama B/B first edition made in Japan with add on’s from China. Those two kits and the Mapex the sound and build quality are phenomenal! But I’ve owned a couple other kits that were made in China I haven’t been too fond of! On the other hand I also have anAmerican made Ludwig Keystone X that I absolutely love! So, unless someone’s paying me to play their drums, I just like to play what sounds good as long as the quality is there!

Should come with a snare...even if they charge more. Catalinas do. The Supraphonic snare really helps here....or anywhere else.

Nick's playing is always a treat. However, if I was going use Aquarian heads for this kit and I did, I chose super 2 coated. Tuned them medium tight, and live or studio they sing. I just found in this video they were too low for my taste.

The bass your getting out of a single ply head is really impressive.

peteEmage it’s mainly the shells. The cherry wood on the inner plies gives it a much darker tone and lower fundamental. And if you watch when he hits the floor tom, the head is super loose. Probably finger tight, then maybe a quarter to half a turn more on the tension rods?

its not the drums. you hear how the snare isn't in the mix either? thats a super cutting snare... the drums aren't mixed well as a whole therefor it sounds like they dont cut

The mix is terrible. All you can (sometimes) hear is a bit of attack. Could be a biscuit tin, could be a $5,000 kit. Who knows?! I’m surprised Sweetwater couldn’t get a good mix on this.

The mix of the music is bad! But these drums sound amazing! I bought this kit a couple weeks ago and have taken it out for a few gigs and I’ve got nothing but compliments! People have said it sounds better then my Keystone X! You have to remember, these are hybrid shells made of maple and cherry. Very versatile and mellow woods. And take my advice, like Nick said, change the heads, but don’t wait! Do it immediately!!! I changed mine out for some emperors and a Powerstroke pro. Huge difference!!! Trust me, these project plenty and sound awesome!

Shades of Gretsch’s Catalinas...good value for money...but no snare. Catalinas come with matching snares. The Supraphonic snare here, helps the drums sound good, remember. Still good value, if you like Ludwig...most do.

Actually the ones that comes with this kit are the China made Remos which are total crap and is why he switched them out!!! Otherwise this kit would’ve sounded terrible!!! He does the same in the demo video for the Mapex Armory kits. They’re outfitted with the same crappy China made heads and he switched them out. Trust me. I’ve owned both, the Mapex armory and this kit. Heads make a world of difference!!!

i bet if these were tuned way up, like jazz or bop tuning, they'd be amazing. but i don't really feel 'em as a 'rock kit'. they seem destined to end up as the kits in an 'equipment provided' rehearsal studio, which they actually seem perfect for. they're not bad or anything, but they still cost way too much for what they actually are

They’re actually great sounding for rock. It really depends on the heads and your tuning. I used them in a rock band and used clear Emperors. Was able to tune them up and get a little more resonance out of them than in this video. They sounded great. I agree the price point is a little steep. I personally would’ve felt the price would be worth it for a a 4 pc. one up two down, configuration.

You can. Just check out any demos for the Keystone X. They’re the exact same drums. The only difference is Ludwig rebranded them, gave you the options to customize them now, and raised the price point from anywhere from $300-$500.

Hi, Roy. They are both excellent drum sets. However, they have their own unique sounds and features. Depending on what you like to hear out of a kit, one may be better than the other. With that said, the Neusonic kit is a really unique wood configuration, with both maple and cherry giving it a very unique tone that you cannot find in any other drum in its price range. I can’t see why drum companies don’t just put better quality heads on from the start, even if they charge a little more. They will sound better from the start, when trying to sell them.

Because heads are very personal and chances are when someone buys a new kit, they’re going to swap out heads for their preference anyway so why charge more and spend more as a company on something that will most likely get scrapped from the get go?

Roy Beckerman like someone else said, heads are a personal preference and so is your sound. Depending on what type of sound you like, will determine what types of heads you’ll use to achieve that sound. For example, even if these came with the American made Ambassadors instead of these cheap Taiwanese made ones, I’d still switch them out because I like double ply heads for the feel and the sound I get from them. Plus, I just recently purchased this kit at my local dealer, got a great price, $825, and got them to throw in a set of heads of my choice for free! That’s the advantage of buying local! You can bargain with them!

Yeah, I’d check out The Drum Center in Portsmouth review of the W/B kit first. They do a side by side comparison with the B/B it’s replacing. Almost no, I mean no difference in sound at all. So you could get the left over B/B’s for probably the same price as this kit? Personally, I think the Neusonics sound great!

I mean if you prefer the sound of walnut and birch sure. But you’d have to spend quite a bit more to get a maple shelled tama that has a virgin bass drum. Starclassic walnut/bb/bubinga kits are super appealing and have great bang for the buck....I just had to come to terms with the fact that I don’t particularly enjoy the way they sound, even if they look incredible.

@@EvilSewnit they are, but they come in what I consider a smallish size and you have to be a fan of the b/b b/w sound. Maple kits from Tama are expensive with virgin bass drums. Finishes are FAR nicer/cooler on the starclassics compared to he ludwig here though.

I have a question. Does different heads controll the sustain or the tuning?? Because i have g2 coated heads 10" 12" 14". When i put them on, they have a great tone but what im really going for is a tone with alot of attack and short sustain. The heads did a great job at the begining. But when im going for the tone im looking for, It has a disgusting sound. Alot of sustain and less attack. Plus i even put donuts on them and did a little bit of the job, but not as much. So i don't know if its the heads or the tuning. And what head would you recomend for great attack but can cut some of that sustain?

Hello, FranciscoHD! I ran into the exact same issue as you on my kit! I found the Aquarian StudioX Clear heads to be the perfect head for a pronounced attack and short sustain. They have a built-in muffling ring that controls overtones, so extra dampening is not needed. At the end of the day though, tuning is crucial and that is something that takes practice. I would rather hear it with the least amount of mics possible. These drums are close mic'd. They're not going to sound like that in the room. For me this is more of a microphone demonstration than a drum demonstration.

alan duncan but if you’re using this kit in the studio or in a live situation, that’s what’s you’re audience and listener is going to hear. The sound from the mic. The kit always sounds different when you’re sitting behind it as opposed to out front.

I’m still a little sad I returned my Neusonics. Liked them but wasn’t “in love” with them. I think it’s sad how these bigger companies won’t dis a company and give their honest opinion of a product. Like he says he switched out the drum heads but they come with nice heads. Total BS! The heads that comes with this kit are total crap! Even in Ludwigs Neusonics videos, the artists doing the playing uses different heads!

“Sturdy legs, sturdy feet on the bass drum...”, not to sound like a jerk, but doesn’t anything made in the last decade adhere to that (sans the cheapest “made in a slave shop in Southern Asia”)? It’s like the David Cross joke “no smoking on this plane and....no slavery”. I suppose the sound test would benefit from: a) binaural from a drummer prospective b) how it sounds from the most common PA and loud speaker combo (personas/X32...through a crown amp w/ 18” speakers w/ preset drum EQ’s).

Casey Sweten agreed, and I’m a Ludwig guy. Nick is too close to the manufacturers imo. Too many nice generalizations in all the reviews.

These are basically a reimagined version of the Signet series that they came out with almost a decade ago, only with sturdier hardware already added. Nothing impressive coming from the Ludwig camp for the past decade or so. They're coming out with too many series in order to capture a chunk of the market, while adding absurd price points to their lower end kits. This series is a decent workhorse kit, but definitely not worth the price. You can easily find a used vintage 70s Ludwig for under 1000. As a matter of fact, I sold a late 70s, 4 pc , 6 ply kit for under 900 last year, and the sound was incomparable.

Sorry Nick horrible head selection. Attack, no rebound, and NO sustain at all. An Aquarian studio X would have been a much better choice. Much Aloha 🥁
