Amazing performance by each musician; really love the thematic commands from both.

Nice job. I want to call your attention to one thing: In m. 30 of the first movement, by writing "arpeggio", Beethoven is telling you to "arpeggiate" i. e. play continuous arpeggios up and down, together with the triplets in the piano. Why? Because CPE Bach says this in his Essay on the True Manner of Keyboard Playing. (Besides, why would Beethoven write "arpeggio" on a triple stop that cannot be played all at once anyway?)

This is a very elementary question but how does one space the middle and ring fingers in precise distants such as your Excellency. Thank you for your future feedback. M.D. out
@peterschmidtcello
@peterschmidtcello 6 лет назад
Hi MD, the keys are: inclination of the hand; not too much, just so that the fingers point in the same direction and practicing double stops of fourths with half-tone and whole-tone steps; it will help not only to refine intonation but also to reorder the spacing mentally.

Composed in Berlin in the summer of 1797, One of the most beautiful pieces of music for the cello ever. The best performance is the recording in 1963 with Sviatoslav Richter (Piano) and Mstislav Rostropovish (cello)

Cello Sonatas No. 1 and No. 2, Op. 5, are two sonatas for cello and piano written by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1796, while he was in Berlin. While there, Beethoven met the King of Prussia Friedrich Wilhelm II, an ardent music-lover and keen cellist. Although the sonatas are dedicated to Friedrich Wilhelm II, Ferdinand Ries tells us that Beethoven "played several times at the court, where he also played the two cello sonatas, opus 5, composed for Duport (the King's first cellist) and himself". Although Jean-Pierre Duport was one of the King's teachers, it is now thought to have been his brother Jean-Louis Duport who had the honor of premiering these sonatas.

I believe themes from this composition were used in the opening music of Edward Yang's 2000 film "Yi-Yi." Thanks, Peter to you and Katia for sharing this. Danke sehr.

Beethoven would have declared this rendition crap, forced them into a 3 month rehearsal and then produce exactly the same outcome only to declare it a masterpiece of recital.

About 3:35, it reminds me of a part in mozart's 13th piano sonata in b flat.

@anthonynicoletti1033

walti945 it's accompanying the cellist. This is not a chamber ensemble. The piece is a CELLO SONATA, the pianist is allowed to be heard, you can still hesr the cello since it does have many measures of rest since this is not a solo piece. When the piano does have more motion than the cellist, you are allowed to bring it out. The cellist in many spots either has a rest, or plays an unimportant part and the piano has tons of motion where the dynamic is marked to be played loud. If you would also be an educated listener the instruments have two totally different timbre's and are easy to discern from one another. This is a really good performance of this sonata. There are parts I would do differently, but that is my take on the piece. If thr cellist wants more, they can always tell the other instrument/s to speak up!

Most feel this is a piano sonata with some cello. The first two cello sonatas are that way.
