5:22 There's one thing this anime episode didn't seem to notice. In the original manga comic, and the TVSP compiled remake of this arc, Sanji kicked Luffy to the direction where Nami-san is, in which accidentally almost hurt her. Sanji usually never does that. He was THAT desperate to shut Luffy's mouth from saying that, almost reflexively.

Such a tough part to get through in a great arc. Zoro keeping calm for Luffy and his decision, Nami and Chopper being emotional to Usopp's decision, and Sanji being the middle man to it all, seeing both sides and acting a way that many don't give much credit to, especially with all the shenanigans he put Usopp through in Skypiea. This part/fight will never cease being a tearjerker.

This cuts down to Usopp's growing insecurity that he shared with Nami. He knows he's weak. He fears the stronger and stronger enemies they will encounter on the Grand Line. But this sudden (from his perspective) decision to leave Merry after what he believes to be "she's useless, leave her and go" draws a direct line to his heart and mind. He feels they'll soon enough do the same to him. Never fails to make me cry, and it's such a great dynamic to start this roller coaster of two arcs.

Luffy delivered the news like this to ussop for a reason he doesn't want him to feel responsible for anything or feel like it's a big deal that's just why

Arlong Park made me fall in love with One Piece and Water Seven made One Piece stay in my heart forever.

everytime i rewatch these episodes i cry every single time these episodes are really rough the first time around, but the 57th time still hurts too

It specifically became really tough to watch one piece after this because it was the longest that Luffy went on without a single smile on his face…. This shows how it was tough on Luffy to have a fight with his best friend and lose him. Can’t wait to see more of your reactions on this amazing arc of one piece where people get super hooked on the series.

Even though I know the story like the back of my hand, these episodes are seriously hard to make it through. My heart is grabbed and squeezed with each word and action.

It's been 3 years since i saw this arc and damn, it was one of the saddest moments in one piece

You may have wondered what is up with the Water 7 saga from all the hype. Well, this is it. And this is not just it, it is just the beginning.

One of the great things about this arc is this fight. It hurts, cause the conflict feels incredibly real and well-managed. They don't fight for a stupid thing, they fight because the conflict was growing around them with no one -even them- noticing it. And it is not a seinen, it is a shonen. These things hardly happens in this genre.

Usopp is closest to Merry bc they were gifted it from Kaya and Merry (her butler) at the end of Syrup Village.

Still remember reading this part when I was young back in like 2004 in the Shonen jump magazine week to week with my best friend at the time. We couldn’t believe what was happening.. felt like the crew was falling apart and we had NO WAY to read the rest until it came out in English every few weeks. Up there with memories like reading Arlong’s finale for the first time. Love your reactions and love for the story, excited for you to continue the journey!

This is a really hard moment in the series because even though Usopp's clearly in the wrong, you really understand where he's coming from. First of all, Merry was given to them by Usopp's love interest, so it has a special place in his heart. Secondly, his role up until this point has been pretty much taking care of the ship, and he sucks at that. Third, he's the one who lost the money. And last, but not least, he's the weakest of the group, and he knows this, so on top of feeling really guilty about them losing the Merry, he's also dealing with his own insecurities. If they are willing to give up on Merry just because someone says Merry can't sail anymore, what assures him that they won't leave HIM once they suddenly realize he's useless. He's clearly on the wrong, of course, and he's letting his personal issues get the better of him, but you understand where this guy's coming from. At the same time, Luffy's in a real tough position because Usopp's arguably his best friend, but he can't let this just fly. He's the Captain, and they are a crew. And regardless of the love they have for each other... Usopp needs to respect that, not just for Luffy but for the rest of them too. Usopp can't just duel Luffy for the ship and then act like nothing happened, because if he can't respect the crew here, why should they trust him moving forward? They're not playing, they're aiming for the top, and they need to be serious about it. I love that you notice that Zoro's always backing Luffy down because that's why he is the second in command. He understands this isn't a game.

Luffy and Zoro, as Captain and First Mate, both know that you don't say "I quit" lightly, and Usopp knows too, as the son of a Pirate. The moment Usopp said it, it was beyond their control. He is out and they have one less partner, that's the chain of command. That's the rules... The whole thing is like two trains colliding in slow motion.

As all One Piece fans will tell you. This show is a masterpiece that you must watch, but you will cry your eyes out.

It taught readers and viewers the author's intention that adventure is not only fun. This is a very precious scene in One Piece.

There are some arcs that step One Piece up, like Arlong Park; W7/EL is another one, with so many emotional and impressive moments. It's impossible for me to not get at least tearing up. I look forward to see the rest of this arc, prepare yourself.

Usopp is actually the first one who knew that the ship cannot sail anymore. He is just in denial and lying just like he always does, he is the one who is taking care and fixing Merry that is why he knew that from the start.

Just a heartbreaking episode it's like watching family fight😢

This is the turnaround point of One Piece. This show is always making us laugh because of goffy things they do but hey, we're not playing pirates here. It's a life or death adventure not meant for the weak ones. I mean by weak not just physically but also mentally. This episode hit every One Piece viewers so hard, that you can reflect to it in real life. The struggle of real life, your insecurities, the pain, and the expectations you need to meet so they won't be disappointed on you. I cried a lot, coz I feel like I'm Usopp. I can't do anything good, I feel useless and I can't keep up. Good lesson tho. Made me stronger as a person. Well done Oda 👏👏

I'm up to date with both manga and anime and, to me, this is the most REAL One Piece moment, maybe not the best one, but the most real one without a doubt, damn!

people need to give Usopp more credit for this fight. Luffy was taking it seriously fro the very beginning, but doubted Usopps skills as usual. Usopp had this entire fight planned out. even taking Luffys punch just to bait out his bazooka for the impact dial the best weapon to use against Luffy. Still heartbreaking to see tho every time i watch it i think of how Luffy tells him to be serious and how often he used to tell people Usopp was just a liar. that defineitly didnt help his destroyed confidence

Usopp was not ready with Merry situation. When you lost someone in a brutal way you have several step like being delusionnal, angry, sad ... and i think Usopp felt guilty against himself to not be able to fight strong opponent. First time watching he was my least favorite mugiwara. I hated him SO much to be bad against strangers but good against Luffy with new attacks very interesting. But i was too implicated on the story ahaha 9

I understand Usopp's position, but he crossed the line. Why would Luffy do that? Luffy also traveled with the Merry, so he asked her to repair the Mary to continue sailing again, but experts said the Merry was no longer a navigable ship. But why do they go against the law? No matter how relatively horizontal the relationship is, Luffy is definitely the captain. A sailor shall obey the captain. Even if it's a bad decision, the captain is responsible. If you're going to do this, why is the captain here? Later, Zoro will say, but the pirates can't unite unless the crew doesn't listen to the captain when they're doing real pirate activities, not just playing pirates. If it is just work or school, I think personal behavior during group life is acceptable to some extent. But that's what happens with pirates? Later, it could be directly related to the lives of all real pirates. Usopp at this time was a real nuisance.

FYI, I hate Usopp. Thus, this is one of my favorite episodes of all time. I cheered and laughed at these two episodes.

I dont think Usopp really loves Merry more then the crew you get very angry on people you love then they do something you very much dont like! So in hes anger and disapointment [and also denial about Merry really is broken] he lashes out and is not thinking clearly and he will bitterly regret what hes done once he calms down. Also he did not try to actually kill Luffy only knocking him out (if possible)and he knows that Luffy can survive evrything he throws at him.

There’s always a weird reaction where people hate Usopp for fighting Luffy “trying to kill him” but no hate for Luffy when he attacks Usopp. I’ll never understand it. Also Luffy wasn’t holding back or trying not to hurt Usopp. He tried several times but Usopp countered every time. It’s moments like these where you can tell a lot about a reactor from this episode. Barring her weird interpretation of the fight, she gets a pass.
