Never played Lufia 1, but i did play lufia 2. I loved it so much, and not just me, my mom and uncle even loved the game. Their favorite part was the ancient cave. They both reached the ending a couple of times but never cleared it. Sadly my mom passed away not long after having the game for a few months and (this is stupid i know) to honor her i made it my mission to clear the ancient cave. I did and never touched the game ever again.

@@Ghostblock you have to play the cave enough to completely outfit everybody...if you cheat you can make EVERY floor full of monsters and chests like the occasional floor you find...very handy against the dragons who drop blue chested items...don't forget to cheat an egg sword too...invaluable later on further down...

if I was forced to play only one snes game for ever, then Lufia 2 it would be. The gameplay is nice, it is funny, it has loads of secrets, lots of items and monsters to experiment with and then there are all the minigames: The casino games with slotmachines and a very decent cardgame and the ancient cave which is a new game unto itself (especially when you unlock newgame++ mode) There is just so much to do in this game.

Another thing to add about Lufia II is that even though it's a prequel, they added a lot of new lore on top of what the first game set up. The introduction of a fifth Sinistral, a certain someone's alter ego in the form of the prophet Iris, the idea that the battle against the Sinistrals was actually a test of humanity's heart, and the extra bit of ending we got to see after the Sinistrals were defeated. And speaking of the ending, it's incredible that even though you know how it ends if you played the first game, it's still a gut-wrenching conclusion to Maxim's story. Fantastic storytelling.
@Soloong_Gaybowzer
@Soloong_Gaybowzer Год назад
From what we know in the Japanese text, they're called "Shikyoushin", which means "insane gods". Arek the Absolute by his words and actions is a neutral god tasked to be an observer and overall ruler of the gods. The Sinistrals themselves are sort of "dark gods". And the story hints that there were supposed to be "good gods" to defend the earth from the evil ones, but they were not summoned by Arek because a human with the potential to challenge the Sinistrals had been born. I believe that Erim leans more towards neutral, because her domain of "death" is a natural force in the life cycle. Which explains why she was the one chosen by Arek to relay his commands to the Sinistrals but also to adopt her alter ego and guide Maxim along his path. So yes, it expanded on the lore a LOT.

lufia 2 is an amazing game, one of my all time favorites even pushing forward into newer platforms with better graphics, the gameplay and dungeon puzzles are absolutely brilliant and i would much rather play a game like lufia 2 rather than a newer age rpg with superb graphics. Sure it is rather easy as far as the combat side of the game goes, but there are more than a few puzzles that not only make you think, but stumped me as a teenager for days on end(before there were internet guides and easy access to them).

Sometimes I don't feel so confident, then I remember that I am a French man who played through this English game called Lufia at 8 years old. I am lucky to live in a bi-lingual country but basically loved video games and stories so much that I taught myself English earlier than other kids to play this "Awesome story game" my 17 year old cousin had beat. I remember crying at the end cause it felt so beautiful. I can't wait to replay this and it's sequel as an adult.

... Lufia 1's actually one of the JRPGs in which i feel the battle theme doesn't really get old. I mean, yeah, you hear it *A LOT*, but it's honestly one of my favorite battle themes ever. It's just so rockin' and unusual for the genre and even the game it's in. I have a lot of personal nostalgia for it and think it's colorful and has good dialogue and a nice story but it's still essentially "Dragon Warrior 2 but longer and with better graphics" when it really comes down to it. But yeah, Lufia 2 is the shit. It's a crying shame that none of the later entries in the series came even anywhere close to its level of quality, and its own 'remake' gutted so much of the game and made it a Ys clone for no reason, but it's definitely up there as a must-play RPG. Also is the Sinistral battle theme one of the best boss themes ever or what?

@DrachenKaiser 7 лет назад

@Dhalin
@Dhalin 7 лет назад
The battles are easy. The puzzles... the yellow/red block ones I thought were rather easy. There's a couple "Growing Plant" or "Shrub" puzzles that are "eh" that you gotta think about, and of course the sliding block puzzle, but that's optional anyways. The the battles are so easy... except for the optional win against Gades early in the game right after you get Selan in the group. Contrary to popular belief you CAN win against him, but it is hard-as-balls and you get a ridiculously powerful weapon for doing it.
@Dhalin
@Dhalin 7 лет назад
And then... the rest of the game is just so easy that's it's just ridiculous. Unlike Lufia 1, you can just hold the L button on most battles and watch a glorified FMV and that's most of the battles in the game. In fact, if you get the Egg Ring and put it on Artea and have his bow... Artea one-shots everything that's not in the last dungeon. Lufia 1 had far more interesting combat, because even normal enemies were oftentimes a challenge, and most of my friends couldn't even beat the first two bosses.

I was fortunate to experience beating the first game before Lufia 2 was released. Stopped in a game shop, opened a magazine and saw news that Lufia 2 was set to release the following month. The surprise and hype swarmed over me that day. It was one of the best hype trains you could be on in the 90s. Lufia 2 was a whole-new-level exciting when you had so much untapped mystery around Maxim and his party. Lufia 1 was an amazing appetizer. Would love if developers could do these reverse prequels more often. It's a very fun ride to be on when the first game builds you up.

I played both Lufia 1 & 2 when they were fairly new games. They completely changed my view of what stories and endings could be in ANY game, ESPECIALLY for cartridge based games. For that alone, I sing the praises of both these games to this day, and still occasionally revisit them. While they're not perfect, they're absolutely timeless and thoroughly enjoyable by ANYONE who enjoys RPGs or a great story.

I never played Lufia 2 back when I was playing snes rpgs, I got kind of burnt out of those games for a long time and never bothered. I recently finally played through lufia 2. It's probably my favourite jrpg of all time now. Those zelda style dungeon puzzles are great. It adds some much needed gameplay to a genre that lacks it at points. And, I know it always gets talked about, but the ancient cave is a pretty neat implementation of a roguelike. It'd be cool to see some of those ideas developed into a standalone roguelike. Combined with some kind of diablo like item system, the blue chest, deeper runs mechanic would be pretty fun.

Haven't played these yet, but I have played Lufia TLR on gbc, and I liked it. +LimeC Roguelike dungeons were featured on 2 Chunsoft games before Lufia 2 did it, just look at the Mystery Dungeon series (not Pokemon Mystery Dungeon mind you). Torneko's Great Adventure for instance was done almost 2 years before Neverland finished Lufia 2. What I will note is that the composer for Pokemon MD that did Sinister Woods bgm may have been more than influenced by the cave theme on Lufia 2 something that has bugged for almost a decade now.

I think the thing that frustrated me the most about the Lufia games was the pattern of "head to village, solve village's problem" done basically over and over and over. I guess that's the "episodic" nature of the game's story. It basically just felt like a series of side quests that didn't really mean anything for most of the game. I enjoyed Lufia 2 especially when it came out and I was much younger, but now, I pretty much just play up to the point where I get to the ancient cave, grind the heck out of that, and then call it quits.

Lufia 2 is such a great game, I wish more people knew about it. It tends to get left out of the conversation when people list the best RPG's of the SNES era. The mechanics in it are interesting, I like the way they handled the item system and the battle system. Feeding items to your capsule monsters to get them to evolve was so much fun as a kid. Keep in mind this was BEFORE Pokemon was ever a thing. Lufia 2 is much better than Lufia 1, it's still worth playing though today imo. Lufia 1's intro song, Final Fantasy (Prelude), Super Ninja Boy (Peace Boom) & Zelda (fairy fountain). Best songs on the SNES. Have been in my head since my childhood.

I played this back then and that Ancient Cave and the concept behind it is still one of the best ideas I remember back of that time. I never completed it, but thats ok.

Lufia II is one of the very few games (five in total) that have EVER managed to make it atop the peak of my "Olympus Mons" of RPGs. What I mean by that: There are GREAT RPG's like "The Witcher III" or "Deus Ex" that make it atop "Olympus" on Earth. Absolute peak of their craft. But then there are, in my opinion, RPGs that go so BEYOND that limit that even the highest mountain peaks on earth would not be worthy for them. So they go to the metaphorical peak of the enormous Olympus Mons. And Lufia II is one of these, at least for me.

I missed out on Lufia 2 when I owned an SNES. But I played it as an emulator ROM and it quickly became one of my favorite SNES RPGs - the puzzles really made the game, and the dialogue was really interesting and different compared to the G-rated script of most SNES games. Highly recommended!

Lufia 1 is colorful with excellent graphics, especially for an early SNES game. The soundtrack is surprisingly great, too. It's may very well be the "ultimate" 16-bit RPG for its time, because it was built on the expectations of what 16-bit RPGs should be at the time: Colorful and fun with rocking music and lots of battles against GIANT 16-BIT BOSS SPRITES. I'm not saying Lufia 2 isn't better and much more modern in design, but 1 can still be a real joy to play. And part 3, btw, is Lufia: The Legend Returns on Game Boy Color, and that is even more underrated than Lufia 1.

Lufia 2 ist not that difficult, but the Ancient Cave is really hard to beat completely(!). I've done it on a real console, had to let the SNES run over several nights. One of the best and nerve-stretching gaming experience I've had.

I can see that. Even back in the day Lufia wasn't exactly a very impressive jrpg. The second one wasn't the best out there either but it was a lot better that's for sure.

This might be the first jrpg I ever beat. The music and graphics are some of the best on the snes given that it was such a late release. It was also the only jrpg I've ever seen to get a Dutch translation complete with a guidebook and everything.

4:54 Another huge plus [Lufia 2] has for it is the soundtrack *Lufia 1's boss battle theme starts playing* I do agree with the statement, but that was a strange choice of music...

I would not say that Lufia 2 was very easy. There were sometimes when I came across a puzzle that I couldn't figure out for days. Being that, I don't usually play for hours and hours on end, but you just made it sound like the easiest thing in the world and that was jjust not my experience
@RettMikhal

Michelle Roach I think he was referring more to the battles than the puzzles. Even if you don't level grind by killing every enemy you see, you still become godlike by the end to the point the Sinistrals are a bit of a joke end boss. This is made even worse by Replay mode, which ups the experience (and gold) by 4x. Using replay, it's easy to level enough to beat Gades the first time you encounter him, and at that point the game couldn't be easier if it tried. Every time I replay I tell myself not to kill as many monsters to make the boss fights more challenging... but you can't. Some rooms require you to clear them and some enemies cannot be dodged. It would be nice to see a next gen remake with a difficulty slider.

I have no idea why, but Lufia 2 is impossible to find. I’ve checked mostly every retro game store in my area, and they say it’s a rare game. I’ve checked eBay, and it’s either just the manual, just the box or a reproduction cartridge. And I’m not about to emulate the game, partly because my computer doesn’t like emulators. I usually don’t get repro carts unless it’s a game that never released in North America, so I have no idea how I’ll be able to play the second game. Edit: Never mind, I managed to track down a copy of the second game.

As good as the plot twist was at the end, I kind of find it annoying that it came at the cost of the gameplay. Specially if you decided to level grind late, as most of the fight will be spent on resurrecting the constantly dying party member. I don't recall much of my playthrough itself, though (will have to revisit it someday), but I do clearly remember that by the end, I was kind of fed up with the dungeon exploration and it's random encounter rate, and just cruised through the final ones. The second game is WAY better. In a "you can kill a ghost ship by casting resurrection at it" kind of better.

Attacking enemy groups isn't unique; Dragon Warrior 3 and 4 also had the same mechanic. The first Final Fantasy needed you to target specific enemies, and if one died before another character who targeted it had attacked it, that character would miss.

I didn‘t find Lufia 2 *that* easy, to be honest. Back then when I first played it, I was avoiding grinding for half of the game (until reaching the second continent) and that really came back to bite me in the ass. Many, many hours of grinding were necessary to stand any chance in the upcoming dungeons. Towards the end of the game, it again became hard as heck. So, in my opinion definitely not an easy game. But a really good one.

I couldn't finish Lufia 1, the encounter rate was much too high and the slow movement in dungeons was so annoying... Meanwhile Lufia 2 is probably one of my favourite games of all time. I loved the puzzles and couldn't wait to get to the next dungeon to see what clever puzzles the game would throw at me. As well, I became really attached to the characters with the great writing and witty dialogs, which did not help with the waterworks, even though I knew the ending already (from Lufia 1). I did like the IP techs in the battle system, innovative mechanic where you could strategize instead of just holding down A. But yes, the battles were too easy and the Sinistrals were cake.
