The WDR BIG BAND plays the music piece "Chi-Chi" composed by Charlie Parker, arranged by Michael Abene. Guest soloist Luigi Grasso (alto saxophone) and the first alto saxophonist of the WDR BIG BAND, Johan Hörlén, put the music of Charlie Parker in a special light. Another solo will be played by Hans Dekker on drums. The WDR BIG BAND is conducted by Jörg Achim Keller. The concert "Birth Of A Bird" was recorded at the Kölner Philharmonie on September 5, 2020.
With the concert project "Birth Of A Bird" the WDR BIG BAND remembers Charlie Parker, one of the pioneers of modern jazz. He is not only considered the "inventor" and brilliant interpreter of bebop, an orientation of jazz that emerged in New York in the 1940s, but also one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. Together with his congenial partner of those years, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker led bebop to its stylistic perfection. In March 1955, Parker died much too early from his drug and alcohol addiction.
