Luka Doncic came out firing with a massive first quarter as the Dallas Mavericks buried the Minnesota Timberwolves early en route to a series-clinching blowout win. Ben Beecken (@bbeecken) breaks down what happened, from Luka's brilliance to the Wolves' lack of a counter-punch. Man, some DAL fans take things so personally and get so angry because the rest of the country isn’t also DAL fans. @@nicholasleemarks I’m not even a Dallas fan 🤣 , I’m a Nuggets fan and I’m not actually significantly rooting for Dallas. The amount of “wolves in 7” comments I seen just shows your low IQ and ignorance of Wolves fans, who is actually that optimistic when they’re down 3-0 and barely won a game against Dallas Without Lively. Good to see Miny Blunder Timberpuppy fans humbled and shut up for once.

Good to see a Locked On host actually give credit to his team's opponent after a playoff loss. Brendon Kleen of Locked on Suns had a very different approach after game 7.

So did the clippers, and OKC host. Clippers host said "I don't give it to you Kawhi was hurt. And Luka is too heliocentric to make the finals" and the OKC host kept bringing up regular season and OKC just missed shots. No Mavs def and Luka and Kyrie beat that @$$ lol

@@JJW419 I mean, it's still wrong, but since most of the games the Mavs won aganst them were close, and considering the Mavs eliminated them in Dallas, I can understand why they'd take that stance. Suns game 7 and T-wolves game 5 are both one-sided beatdowns on the road.

As a Mavs fan, game 5 we were finally healthy. Maxi came back who is our back up 4 & DLively came back (even though these Wolves tried to injure him again). We finally had our full rotation.

Losing game 4 was actually godsend. Maxi got a couple games of reps before the finals. And Gafford had to play bigger minutes to feel just a tiny bit more comfortable being the main 5

I always thought Gobert was your dirtiest player but nope, that honor goes to Naz Reid. That flagrant was 100% intentional. He was trying to put that kid in the hospital. Your team sucks so bad that they can’t win without literal attacks on their opponents. Karma came and this trash team will never go anywhere. Don’t get me started on that petty ass coach who subtly blames the refs and overtly blames his players. Him complaining about “illegal screens” would be like a coach blaming the loss on the eurostep lol.

@@thedoubtfuls Young team? Not really. Problem is, you have a young star, but not a young team. On average your rotation was 1.5 years older then the Mavs rotation... Luka 25, Gafford 25, Washington 25, Green 23, Hardy 22, Lively 20... thats a young core! Ad 27 years old DJJ and 7 of our 9 current rotation players (Kyrie 32, Maxi 32) are well under 30. And O-Max, a 22 years old, 6'8 ,235 lbs, 7'2 wingspan, highly athletic Wing who can shoot the 3 (42.5% on 5 3PA this season in 27 G-League games) will crack the rotation very soon to replace Maxi. As crazy as it sounds, but Dallas has a way better young core then the Wolves. And wont be over the Hard cap line, let alone the 2nd Tax Apron, next season as well. MIN has to make some hard decisions. Run it back and hope for the best, or get more flexible (and deeper) trying to get rid of that KAT monstrosity of a contract.

Thanks for the podcasts Ben, I listened to most of them throughout the season. I’ve never followed a season as closely or as intricately from start to finish before this year. I learned a lot about all the players 1-15 and the coaching staff, and enjoyed your insights. It was a fun ride ✌️

GG’s Wolves. In four close games, it came down to just making tough shots down the stretch. Ant just has to develop more and figure out how to lead his team through the finish line in close games. Have a nice summer.

Not sure if Denver completely drained the wolves but they were push overs for the mavs. OKC played wayyy more physical and with urgency

bad matchup. they were built to beat Denver. 3 bigs doesn't help you against 2 guards and bigs that just catch lobs and score easy dunks. Gobert can contest Joker's shot, but he can't do nothing about Luka draining a 3 in his face. Reid and KAT would experience the same outcome against Luka, but them 3 could wear down Joker who had to play 47 minutes in G7.

Another podcast observed that when a player is going nuts like that, and the other team doesn't believe they can stop him, it makes the other team feel some pressure to keep up with his scoring, which can lead to bad offense. I think we saw that in this game- It snowballed because he was giving them buckets and the Wolves got a little panicked and were trying to hit home runs

No ben, its not surprising that the wolves got blown out. 1) it happened all last series 2) they have no second scoring option. Outside of ant, everyone else is a role player scorer. Kat has been used like that for much of the season, but now u want him to batch score? Nah. Wolves have overachieved already, no O this bad ever wins. So once they saw they cldnt score, n the D wasnt working cuz Luka went nuts, it was a lost cause. Thus they gave up.

Luka had an amazing first quarter but even then the score was only 35-19. How many easy shots, yet again, did the Wolves miss? Why did the coaches decide the offense would be run through Gobert - of all people - to start this game? How does that get your actual scorers in a rhythm?? If they had been performing on the offensive end they could have weathered the punch. Instead their lackluster offense ensured there was no ability to keep things somewhat close or come back. There is no #2 consistent scorer on this team who can shoulder the load and create their own shot when Ant is getting double- and triple-teamed. You cannot win at the highest levels by having a random guy step up one game, then another the next while the first falls off a cliff. Because tonight showed what happens when that's what you rely on. Wolves have some hard decisions they are going to have to make this offseason, particularly if they get a chance to trade KAT for a legitimate #2 scorer. *Edit: just went back and looked at the last 5 minutes of the 1st quarter. Score was tied 18-18 and Luka had already scored 12 of his 20 first quarter points. The Wolves were weathering the storm just fine, then fell off a cliff. This is exactly what I'm talking about: 4:59 - Gobert misses 6-foot shot 4:46 - Conley misses 3-pointer 4:20 - Conley misses 2-pointer, Gobert offensive rebound then stone-hands turnover 3:36 - Ant misses layup 3:20 - Naz misses 2-pointer 2:35 -NAW misses 3-pointer 2:11 - Ant misses 19-footer 1:29 - KAT turnover 1:14 - Kyle Anderson turnover 53 seconds - Ant only makes 1/2 FT 19 seconds - Naz misses layup Again, Luka has already scored over half his points and the game was tied. Wolves ended the 1st quarter shooting 31/20/40 🤦‍♂️

Wolves didn’t have easy shots, I’m trying explain this to people, every inside shot was challenged at the rim. Dallas forced Minnesota to beat them from the outside and Minnesota couldn’t.

@@unbiascowboy1537 only 2 of the shots in the final 5 minutes was at the rim. It completely backs up my point. The Wolves were getting pretty solid looks away from the rim but could not shoot - i.e., fell off a cliff. A *consistent* #2 scorer is the guy who usually takes over in those types of situations - instead the Wolves had to rely on a random player to get hot and no one did. Before this series, Luka had off games and Kyrie had off games. But *they rarely if ever* were off in the same game. Compare that to this series, where our #2 scorer, through the first 3 games, was shooting 27.8% and 13.6% from 3. In this Game 5 1st quarter, Gobert ended up leading the team in scoring with 7 points on 3-7 shooting and 1-2 free throws. He ended the game with *9 points*. The offense in the 1st was terrible and just baffling from a coaching perspective. You already know you cannot rely on Rudy Gobert to drop 30+ points for you, let alone 40, but your strategy to start the game was to run everything through him?!? Nobody else had any rhythm to their game after that and the shooting at the end of the quarter showed it!!

As a Mavs fan, I'd say this is the list of T-Wolves problems. KAT has low bb IQ and tunnel vision, Gobert is an offensive disaster, Ant poor conditioning. Overall the team was too slow for the Mavs while the size difference could not compensate (game 1 was won in transition - easy buckets). The athleticism dif. between Lively/Gaff and Gobert/KAT is jarring, and costly. Rudy's swipe at Lively's neck, and Reid's intentional smack just a couple of signs of inmaturity. It made me mad 'cause I overall like your team - save Rudy (dirty player - as per French tradition in all sports). Save Mike, Slow-Mo is the most intelligent player on that roster. The offense is too predictable in general. I don't like your coach's attitude of calling out his players in public while he himself didn't do a great job this series. Got outchoached by Kidd in in-game management, adjustments, and all-around really. Hope Ant ups his game. The international game can be a good testing ground for him because of restricted space, and dif. rules under the rim. GG, good season, and good luck, Wolves.

Every team after they lose try to do the would’ve, could’ve, if game. The whole point is You couldn’t and that’s the reason they lose. It doesn’t matter if it’s close or a blowout, the WHOLE POINT of playing the game is to win. You couldn’t do that.

After G 5, I took a short nap. I had an interesting dream: the entire Minnesota team was in wheelchairs. They were in front of a large hospital window. Gobert and Reid were paralyzed from the neck down. Lively and DDJ walked by, smiling and eating hamburgers. I enjoy taking naps. I will definitely take them next season as well. I don't forgive. I don't forget. What goes around, comes around.

Is crazy that you guys keep saying open 3s like if they were all open. It’s not hard to tell that Dallas contested the 3s they wanted and allowed some they were willing to live with. You guys couldn’t score in the paint and turn into a jump shooting team off rhythm. Thats different.
