Luke Black on Serbian tragedy and PZE backlash (What Really Happened at Eurovision, Episode 5)

It’s been one year since Luke Black announced himself to Serbia and won Pesma za Evroviziju. His iconic ‘Hello’ could rival Adele or Lionel Richie but it wasn’t always plain sailing for the Eurovision 2023 artist. After winning Serbia’s national selection Luke faced a huge backlash from Serbian celebrities who branded him everything from the devil incarnate to not being "Serbian enough."
“I think there was like a lot of misconception about the visual, actually. That was the first thing. And I think, you know, like a male artist having a pop choreo and being kind of dramatic” Luke told us.
Most difficult of all, however, was confronting national tragedy while in the public eye.
In the latest episode of "What Really Happened at Eurovision?" we’ll delve into the behind-the-scenes drama for the Serbian delegation in 2023. From the applause that abruptly turned to criticism to navigating the complexities of national identity, Luke Black's Eurovision experience was a rollercoaster of emotions.

As a Serbian, I saw a lot of bad comments about Luke's performance and the song but I honestly think he had one of the best Serbian songs in esc since we are competing

It’s an auto tuned vocal that can’t be replicated live. Riley was another example.

Luke said that some people think that there is autotune in the studio version, but that there is absolutely no autotune. And that he just sang in a sleepy way (because of the concept of the song) very close to the microphone so it would be louder than the music. There is a vocoder in the song I think, but that's different. @@nnex

One of my absolute favorite Eurovision entries of all time. It's not just a song, but a complex concept full of details, overlaying meanings and an incredible combination of musical genres. It's so sad that a few conditions prevented such an incredible artist from shining to his full potential, but it's great that he can be honest about it and let it go. I follow Luke's work and he is a true artist who reflects reality in his own wonderful way. It's so sad to hear that some narrow-minded people have tried to push him off the path because of prejudice, but his inner strength is immense. This is what music should be in this age - progressive, innovative but with deep meaning and sincere :)

Looking back at Eurovision 2023 as a whole and realizing today, 8 months later, that Luke had one of the best produced songs of the year

It's been almost a year now since I stumbled across him and I still admire his eloquence and humility at least as much as his music. He handled the interviews with such an openness, showing vulnerability and humanity in a situation that clearly moved him deeply. I can't imagine what it must have been like to perform under these circumstances, especially since it was his first performance after a long time and with a tragically fitting song. But I'm glad to hear that he doesn't beat himself up about it and the results. He certainly made the most out of it and I hope his interactions with his fans long after Eurovision show him that our unwavering love and respect for him exceed by far what some televoting numbers can express.

Serbia has sent so many different kinds of songs since 2018… Balkanija, Nevana, Hurricane, Konstrakta, Luke : totally different style but still they all succeeded to elevate their song as much as they could ! I don’t care about the results, for me Serbia is one of the most qualitative countries at Eurovision. Everyone can find a song they like in the recent entries 🫶🏻

Luke, I watch eurovision for 20 years you were my favorite last year. I think your performance is the most underrated ever. It was so unique and special. Sound was not so great (better in Serbia), however it was truly 10/10 for me. Keep going. You are not mainstream and thats ok !!!! 🥂

Luke Black is a complete artist who unfortunately has no support in his country.But that in no way diminishes the quality of the music he creates.The song " Samo mi se spava" wos among the best at the Eurovision Song Contest last year.I hope that his performance encouraged other young artists in Serbia not to be afraid to be different and not to follow trends.Go ahead Luke,love for everyone❤

I am so so so happy (no pun intended or..?) that he got to represent Serbia with that exact song and performance. It was the first time for me having Serbia number one at the adult Eurovision which is so surreal, never before thought it will happen so I thank Luka for that ♥ When it comes to the end result 1. he was in the final so that is the first most important step so to say so that's good ✔ 2. his overall result was extremely poor considering the love and the cheering he received ❌ from the jury it's not surprising but from the audience...

Tbh, from what I could gather from the diaspora, most people thought that he was weird and that the song itself was not representative of Serbian culture.
