Luke gives a quick update on each of the dogs’ progress over the last few days training. We’re very happy with their progress so far, they’re working hard and already showing so much that they want to learn how to do the right thing.
Making an initial connection is a big deal with our style of training. Luke and Jason try to figure it out with each dog. Each connection is different. They need it to start building a strong relationship of trust and respect.
Some were harder than others. For example Neveah was quite difficult. She refused to acknowledge Luke and Jason were there initially. Luke took a guess she likely had Boxer in her given her look, markings, physique. Knowing a bit about what drives Boxers and gets them worked up. He started dancing around a metre or so in front of Neveah. Just like he does to get Bandit excited. Neveah went from nervous, fearful aggressive and not looking at Luke … to bouncing, playful and now engaging whilst training. Whilst this is a very small moment in a long road of training, it’s a very important one to learn about Neveah and now she feels like this guy gets me.
Rosco is a love bug who is still asking himself how he wound up here, Chance is a big teddy bear that sometimes lets out the grizzly bear but is already learning how to let that one go, Molly just wants the affections of people and lots of it.
It’s sad that people have let these dogs down so badly, they really don’t deserve it.
NB: I will mention we don’t use choker chains in our training, but Chance came with one from the shelter because he attacks the lead and handler. We’re yet to replace this with a flat or training collar given the emergency/timing of the situation with these 4 dogs. We need to order one for his big size. During training at the farm, Chance like the other dogs, wears a training halter.
