Will never forget 1989, watching my little 10" tv in my college dorm watching Tracy Chapman perform her song live on the grammys, just her and a guitar. Great songs live forever. Good job on your version LC.
I could not play this enough when I heard it. So amazing when an artist from one genre covers a song from a different genre. Love collaborations from different genres, all walks of life, different races . I fucking love different races coming together. It's beautiful
‘Still Gotta Make A Decision, Leave Tonight Or Live And Die This Way’, weighs heavy on a lot of people. If not all people in this world, it probably comes to mind at least once in everybody’s life. I think this is why this song (whether sung by Tracey Chapman or Luke Combs) resonates with me and so many others.
Thank you Luke Combs. This song is a stepping stone in my life now. I have been sober 51 days now and this is my motivation song. Thank you even though we will never meet.
Congratulations, my friend. I have been told I was never an 'official' alcoholic, but I know myself...& if I wasn't yet, I was on the brink. Alcohol is the true definition of an imposter: it hugs you for a few days & beats you from then on. Kudos to you for saying No to its false promises.
This song Makes me think of my ex and driving fast in his car & being in love & happy with his kids and mine and our nights out together .. he made me feel like it was real and on top of the world .. like I was needed and someone special… but then found out he’s a heartless Narcissist but this song brings me back w tears to those nights cursing fast and happy just me and him.. 💔
I love both versions, but only Tracy’s version can bring me to tears. My husband and I were both raised by alcoholics and I can feel her emotion in the song.
Both make me cry. They remind me of my grandma. I miss her so much. We use to talk every day sending each other music to listen to. She’d always send Fleetwood Mac and Tracy’s songs. I wish I could send this to her.
@@mr.channel6467 1:00 the song is about her dad being an alcoholic and her mom leaving. “See, my old man's got a problem He live with the bottle, that's the way it is He says his body's too old for working His body's too young to look like his My mama went off and left him She wanted more from life than he could give I said somebody's got to take care of him So I quit school and that's what I did”
Tracy Chapman proves what a genius she is. I sob every time I listen to these lyrics. Luke does it justice. Not changing any lyrics so it hits so hard.
Although he should've changed the word girl to guy when he said checkout girl. Because he has such a deep manly voice and can't really work as a checkout girl, lol. It ruined it for me. When I was first listening, I was like wow this is crazy how different it sounds. Like a completely different song and visual. But when he said girl, it ruined it for me. Just a remake...
@@farwoodfarm9296 yeah, it misses the mark for me. Removes the heartfeltness and makes me think someone is just reading lyrics from a page. It changes the realness I was feeling at the beginning.
This song reminds me when my dad was nicer and did not just think about him self and now its different and it also reminds me how dumb i feel But i love the song it reminds me thst i can be better❤
I recently spoke with a stranger as part of a business call I made and she recommended I listen to this song when she heard my last name and I'm so glad she pointed me this direction ❤️
It's okay my dear. I'm always going to give my best to all my beloved fans. I would be no where near who I am today without your love. So tell me, how long have you been streaming my music here on RU-vid
Nothing beats the original but this is good. Glad to see that he didn’t change the lyrics just because he’s a man. Always think that’s mad disrespectful when people do that. If you’re singing someone’s song, sing it how they wrote it
I hope Tracey getting paid bank on royalties to her song. He just surpassed the original on the top100 charts. Nothing beats the original but he did great!!
I’ve never heard Tracy Chapman’s version and this cover really had me take a look at that song. It makes me think of my parents and how they are now after raising us to be 4 wonderful adults. My parents weren’t drunks but they did make sacrifices to make sure that we would have a better life. What I’ve learned is to not have regrets. If you’ve always wanted something go out there and get it!
I like that he still sings "checkout girl". I like when men are secure enough in their sexuality to keep opposite-sex pov lyrics intact. And it's a great interpretation.
Just in case you don't know, this is a cover by Tracy Chapman and it's always nice to hear a different version of one of your favorite songs ever. Go check them out after this if this happens to be your first time hearing this song.
This is a nice cover and definitely brings a new feel. And, more than anything, i think it shows the power of the original and of Tracy Chapman’s lovely songwriting. Nice work. 🎉
This takes me back to the good times. Us being care free and not worrying about tomorrow knowing there was plenty of time to figure it all out just me and her. Well time caught up. Life hits harder than anything I’ve ever encountered.
I’m FINALLY coming to hear what all the rage is about and literally one minute in I can say he did it again! Luke NEVER disappoints, goosebumps from the beginning and now I’m actually crying! Wth 😂😂😂😂 alright, Luke you win. I hope Tracy is insanely happy with this as well for you! You deserve all the love 💕
Having been around for the original, I was hoping that this new release might have taken it into some new directions, with the closing being ripe for some soaring lead guitar additions. And a male singing with the “girl” lyric seemed out of place, but it is still nice to see the track getting air time again, in 2023. That only reinforces how lucky we older listeners are to own, still, a lot of these classic songs on vinyl, cassettes and CD’s. And RU-vid archives fill in the rest. 👍😎 🎸
I'm a child of the 80s so Tracy Chapman's original version of this song speaks to me. While I still prefer her version better, Luke did an excellent job with this rendition. People may complain about cover songs but many times it's a way to deliver a really great song to a new generation that never heard it before.
No country artist unless they grew up in object poverty can really capture the power of this song. The TC version has a rawness, sadness, and power he can’t duplicate. I’m not anti Luke Combs but it just doesn’t resonate like the original.
In the current divisive political environment we find ourselves, it is so refreshing that someone like Luke Combs recorded this song. Perhaps I’m reading too much into this, but I don’t think so. Heavy props to Luke Combs.
First time I heard Mr. Combs’ remake. Damn he a great job! I always be partial to Ms. Chapman’s original, but Luke gave a nice country spin on this classic! Well Done Luke!

Mom an dad working hard...we barely getting by. Me wishing i could help, but still in school. Wishing we all could just go an run away from the hardship
Been hearing this version on the radio a lot lately. I only heard the original on the radio once, but I loved it the minute I heard it. I did like this version as well though
This is one of those Great Great songs ( Tracy Chapman) you don't think anyone could do it Justice by covering it but then comes along Luke Combs out of left field and does an amazing job🎉🎉🎉
Fast car is my all time favorite song. This is the only cover I’ve ever liked. Luke Combs understands the story telling of this song has to be the focus. Brilliant cover
Chapman's is the "real" version... and its so f-ing real, like she is singing to herself. Luke's version is the jukebox friendly breezethrough version. I like both, but the orginal better captures what makes this song a standout. To Luke's credit... he doesn't change the "checkout girl" lyric even though its him singing... respect to the orginal. 👍
I only heard this version because I was getting gas and it was playing. I found myself dancing to it. ❤ Tracy's version has this struggle ethos that almost always make me cry. 😢 I know what it's like to feel trapped. 🙏💯
This song is an absolute classic. Absolutely iconic. Tracy Chapman made this a masterpiece. Luke Combs does it Justice. It hits just as hard as it always did.

Not a bad effort, respect to him for liking this song. Anybody that wants to hear some great music should check out Tracy’s debut album with this. Classic.
