Facts can be nasty things. When stating fact you know will offend the one you're saying it to you're offensive, and it is offensive. That being said people gotta man up a deal with reality, society soft pillowed everyone, I don't understand how people get hurt by facts. I'm 5'6 170. I've never taken offense in being called short or stocky, I am, sp what, it's great laughing material while I'm outsprinting and outlifting people a foot taller and a 100lbs heavier.
all the losers who criticize his style are the same people who would give their left nut to master that style if it meant they'd be an undisputed champion xD If it works, dont fix it lol Dricus isnt putting anyone to sleep watching his fights - his fights are entertaining brawls, so what exactly are they complaining about?
Hi Gents, love your show. You must understand, when you play rugby, you need more than one game plan. I don't think MMA fighters have more than one fight plan, DDP has. And we are South Africans, we love to fight
South africa has a big rugby culture and ddp grew up with it. In rugby you hit each other for 80 minutes and after the game you shake hands and have a beer together.
As a South African, handing over a "jersey" is a very important tradition in Rugby, it means you respect the hell out of your rivals. Rugby's greatest rivalry is SA - NZ, New Zealand are the greatest team in history and SA are the best in World Cups, and on the field our guys try to kill each other, as soon as the final whistle blows, the guys go and have a beer together in the dressing room. This is where the guys also swap jerseys.
The Aussies, English and Kiwis always find something to cry about when South Africans pull out "unorthodox" or innovative ways to win - I guess now you can add Yanks (notable exception Luke here) to that list. I was watching the Joe Rogan fight commentary when Dricus faced Izzy and they similarly just couldnt give the champ any respect lol Talking like the guy is just a goofy brawler who swings for the fences, blowing his tank... every comment was essentially about Izzy dominating and Dricus essentially being a powerful but low IQ fighter... that is until Izzy got rope-a-doped, submitted and then they went real quiet lol Clearly Dricus and his coaching team arent just some flash-in-the-pan dumb-dumbs who fly by the seat of their pants. That simply can't account for the continued success. Give credit and respect where its due.

DDP was sincere - those are SOUTH AFRICAN values -to stay humble and respectable likewise if you look sat rugby - even though we are back-to-back world champs - they stay humble and respectful to the oppositions
His coach also plays a major factor during fight he has incredible fight iq,and gameplan for each round definitely deserves coach of the year in my book
While Morne is obviously very good at what he does, 2 things count against him IMO. 1. He only has one fighter in the UFC (two if you add Saaiman who had a recent loss) and 2. His training techniques are maybe not great. I get it, and it works, but it's not going to work for all fighters. You don't see Rassie running about zapping Springboks with tazers.

16:43 The jacket that DDP gave Izzy was n gift given by the Springbok team( a VERY BIG HONOUR for a South-African sportsman to receive and since the Rugby team is the pinnacle/face of South-African sport) It is also a custom that Rugby teams(players) do at the end of some games. Where they would trade their Jersey with another opposing teams player that they admire or respect(again a show of respect and honour) The fact that DDP was willing to give Izzy that Jacket after the fight is a GREAT sign of RESPECT and I believe true sign of reconciliation. Hope this clears things up.
Most sportsman in RSA(South Africa) Wish to don the Green and gold colors of our nation. The fact that DDP managed to receive that as a Gift and then give it to Izzy is again nothing to be sinical about. I can tell you, as a SAFFA myself, if I would ever to receive such gift I would not give it to my opponent and instead keep it as a memento.
If it works then it’s the right way. It’s just not aesthetically pleasing to watch 😂. None would I show a none fighting his highlights. It’s gonna make them think they can do it too . Not realizing DDP is an anomaly
DDP shares the same mental state that the Springboks and a lot of South Africans do when it comes to contact sports. They are often criticized for maybe being a bit rough around the edges, they certainly don't follow the norm when it comes to gameplan and approaches. They are immensely physical, to the point that when you don't fully understand unless you feel it in person. And they have a self belief that is borderline delusional to some people. Glad to see that SA is finally getting some time in the light for positive reasons.
Helwani, given his heritage, has an inborn need to stir as much drama as possible, ESPECIALLY around this match. They can't help it. They always do it, no matter what.
You guys are starting to get it, starting to understand "wat ons weet." Thank you for starting to respect our proudly South African fighter and champion, he's undoubtably earned it. Maar julle sal steeds nooit weet wat ons weet nie. 😉
If you guys ever spend a good amount of time in a Pretoria bar, you'll see at least x3 bar fights with DDP's style everywhere used by everyone 😂 but seriously, part of his success is being constantly underestimated. That's why DDP says, "Hulle weet nie wat ons weet nie."
Tony was eventually exposed when before he had one of the best runs ever. Extremely untechnical can work while young, durable, uncracked chin and athletic, but the second those start to slip it usually ends badly for fighters.
Thank you Luke. It's the South African way. It may not look pretty, but we get shit done. The sportsmanship after the fight was great, sincere or not. The fact that they made the effort says a lot about them both. And for all of the people who say that Izzy wouldn't have done the same, it doesn't matter.

Dricus getting a fight in South Africa... I do not envy the guy who'd face him. People have no idea how hard South Africans back a champion, and how hard it is for a South African camp to be beaten on his home turf.
But, South Africans don't boo other nations when they compete on SA soil - tbis happened in Canada and Australia now, and previously we experienced it in rugby matches. We back our people, but we are not rude or uncivilised.
DDP was classy in victory. Does anyone think Izzy would have been as classy in victory? Hell no! Izzy is the one who was trolling Alex P. Son after the ko. He made it racial with DDP . Izzy was planning to travel to South Africa to DDP hometown to rub it in. DDP showed real class and was humble in victory. Truly a good guy, unlike Izzy whose ego could fill up the stadium they fought in.
Dricus is a fighter. Not a ring fighter or an octagon fighter or a street fighter. He is just a fighter. He loves fighting, he loves the challenge and he loves people under estimating him. Welcome to a South African mindset when it’s unleashed.
Of all the Fight Podcasts, this is BY FAR THE MOST INTERESTING ONE I encountered. Not because it , finally, objectively and honestly analysed Dricus du Plessis, but the whole Presentation and Knowledge of the Presenters is amazing. You have a new fan.
The weird thing is that people still act like kickboxing is what we should REALLY care about in MMA fights. Like if you win by kickboxing only - thats much better than winning with other tools including grappling. Like "oh that dude was better but he got taken down and subbed" still means he was better somehow but accidentally tripped on a banana and lost by chance. You never hear that narrative when someone just knocks a dude out like "oh obviously the other dude was much better and totally wouldve taken him down and subbed if he hadnt tripped and gotten knocked out". That said, Dricus won on the feet. He subbed Izzy pretty quick and easily because Izzy was hurt by punches. I know Izzy is great att defending subs and getting up. He wouldve resisted ALOT more if he wasnt so hurt. Probably would not have gotten subbed.

Despite what certain people want to say, DDPs Team really are the first African Champions. And thats a huge deal. Kamaru is American, was schooled and trained in America, from a US Gym Izzy is a Nigerian- Kiwi , schooled and trained in New Zealand from a Kiwi Gym. Francis is certainly an African champion but he was trained in France and then in the US. He lives in the US and fought out if an Anerican Gym. DDP and his team were all born and raised in Africa, schooled in Africa, trained in Africa, lives in Africa and took the belt back to Africa. That's huge, and i have friends in Cape Town who've said he's lit a fire under people of all colours. If people want to start going purely by skin colour(seems a bit racist though), i guess Pereira is a Portuguese Champ, Jon Jones is an African Champ, GSP was a French Champion, Brock Lesnar was an English Champ etc. Its absurd.
People fail to realize how much its going to do for the sport in Africa. Fighters from all over Africa train at Morne Visser's gym. Fighters no longer need to go to America, Australia or Europe to train at a high level gym. Guys with potential have a better chance of making it out of Africa
You can't be African if you were not Born on the continent, this might piss some black people off, but its a fact, I'm Africa because I was born in Africa, im not Dutch-african because my forefathers are Dutch same with the African people whose descendants are from Britain, they don't call themselves British-african, only black Americans think they can be African without ever touching a grain of soil in Africa, 😂😂😂 they are black Americans or just Americans, they can decide themselves, you are where you are born, not where your ancestors are from..!
All that means nothing. Francis was born and spent most of his time in Africa. His head coach was African. He eventually moved to us like most athletes.
One thing Dricus has is that he actually goes for it. Lots of fighters talk about it, but quite few come off the stool in the 4th round and give it hell. Most play it safe to some extent because worse than a loss is getting finished, for 95% of fighters I think. But Dricus just goes out there and GOES
I agree. With Dricus I have the feeling he truly doesn't care about the whole narrative. He hasn't built himself this idea of being a warrior and going out on his sword. He doesn't need the recognition from so called alpha males. He does his own thing, keeps his head space clear and simply goes for it, with the only thing that matters is being able to look himself in the eyes in the mirror after the fight. Meanwhile guys like Strickland are all up in their emotions, trying to mask it with an alpha facade, but in reality, they're unable to distance themselves from all the media narratives. And DDP is having a lot of fun playing on these guys' emotions.
Swapping jerseys atter a big game is a long-standing rugby tradition and a massive show of respect. Dricus' gesture with the jacket came from the same place. Ditto him speaking to Izzy's parents after the fight.
I'd consider myself a 'bit' of an anarchist, I love things and people who shake up the natural order of things and challenge authority. DDP is doing exactly that to the MMA media, and a lot of fans. They're acting like "HOW DARE HE" win title fights with that crude brawler style, like he's almost cheating, and there's been an injustice. Trying to belittle or downgrade his achievements. Fact is, 'experts' like to think they know everything about the game, and the fighter with the most silky technical skills is the 'better' fighter, and therefore 'deserves' the belt... DDP has f**ked all that up, so has Strickland, and they don't like it. There is also a political/social white South African vs a black guy element which people like Helwani get real excited about... And salty. The guy is just showing that, yes, this is a sport, but it's a fight and he's an absolute dog, never stops coming forward and swarming you with punches and keeps trying for a takedown even when he fails. He should be a lot of people's favourite fighter because he's showing if you just want something bad enough, hard work and being a dog can overcome elite 'talent'. Anyone can take a lesson from that. Good luck to him. That comment was a lot longer than I planned...
Lots of it is connected to a sort of racism, sadly. Even within the MMA media, you have to be woke to an extent. A white african who is proud to be african stings in the eyes of american media, they cant comprehend it.
Great post and funny thing is, they doing and did the same with our rugby team. The mainstream guys complained about our style of play and our dangerous 8-1 split and how we use our scrums blah blah… funny how people envy us South Africans just cause we do things differently
If you understand South African rugby culture, you’ll better grasp DDP. For instance, the Springboks and All Blacks fiercely compete on the field, but off the field, they share a beer and camaraderie. These two nations strive to outplay each other but hold deep mutual respect.
DDP never really called anyone any ugly names. He replied with pretty much exactly what people were saying to him. Thats not really "going after people", now is it? He would not have said anything about Erceg for example if Erceg hadnt slighted him before the fight.
Please bring us DDP’s next fight here in South Africa. You’ve never seen a whole country show up for a fight. Since January he has been climbing into the conscious awareness of every South African outside of the MMA world like Hercules performing the 12 labours. By the time the fight happens he will be a local god. I pity who ever faces him here. They won’t be facing a single South African in an octagon, they’ll be facing off with 60 million South Africans shouting his name. Nkosi sikelel’ iAfrika.
Another reason people don't take him seriously is because he's from South Africa. Americans struggle to acknowledge that Africa can produce such talent and that their ways are not the gold standard.
Humble in victory and gracious in defeat... the post match engagement was genuine. Its how we are brought up with all our sports. And I hope it does not change with all the new chest beating show boating that has become the norm.
DDP is going to “Make Strickland Cry Again”. Sean is a closeted libtard. Always brings up apartheid when DDP had nothing to do with it. Buys a tesla. Cries like a snowflake when his feeling are hurt. Only for me not for thee.😂
I am so glad that Luke is giving Dricus some credit. My word how much more does he have to do to earn respect from more people, while back at the ranch, his fans knew all along how good he is???
Just for clarification: Stillknox is a wordplay on Stilnox the sleeping tablet - this is where the nickname originates from...he puts people to sleep! I like the "Keep knocking till the door opens" analogy though.
Wish I could dislike this trash. Ddp has explained his name, these people are lying to you, you gave an incorrect and a terrible break down of his name
I hate how worked up everyone is getting about styles the last few years , this gym ,that gym. This style, that style. Mma is built on the backs of fighters proving style and schools didn't mean jack "oh great your a karate master how do like getting choked ?" Oh great your a wrestler? How do you like getting kicked upside the head ?everyone thought mc Gregors movement was a stupid gimmick until he took aldos head off in ten seconds then his haters say it was because he got pieced up by kahbib its so dumb you don't get style points in the ring ddp is a physical monster who grabs hold of people and they struggle to stop him , hits like a truck, has a great chin and doesn't stop moving all fight long that's his "style"
In re sincerity of post-fight reconciliation... it almost doesn't matter if it's sincere or not. It's a formal ritual for making peace, and burying the hatchet.
The "Ritual" of humbling yourself to your competitor and his family is a very African sentiment. There was never any bad blood, we respect our elders, at least Dricus and Izzy's generation, my generation. I can tell you this, that jacket is symbolic because it's a gift of love but also recognition to the other fighter, from mine to yours, nation, family, prosperity etc... Out of all the events leading up to, during and after the fight, that handing over of the jacket is the thing that made me emotional.
DDP has elite situational awareness. There were moments when Adesanya wanted to press forward for the kill, but each time he was met by an explosive outburst. Either a takedown attempt or combination of power punches. For example, in round 3 Izzy hit DDP with a spinning elbow and proceeded to move forward with bad intentions. Ten seconds later Izzy had his back to the cage like a wounded animal after eating a left hook. That was a microcosm of the match. DDP understands that offence is the best defense which breaks his opponents rhythm. He is deceptively dangerous.
Sport has played a huge role in keeping the peace in South Africa. Althletes take representing our country very seriously. What Dricus did after the match did not surprise any South Africans. He is the real deal, I can assure you of that. You just don't know what we know😉
I'm a south african. I've been following Stillnoks for a long time. Dricus is a good fighter. He knows what he is capable of and he doesn't overstep his own capabilities. He's been fighting since childhood. Juijutsu, kickboxing, boxing. He is very decorated
Loopy punches, not great movement on defense, seemingly average cardio, but he’s crazy strong and he transitions very smoothly from striking as DDP can grapple and submission wrestle.
Still great defence tho. Very responsible with his guard. Constant movement, doesn't just shell up and let the opponent pick away with no resistance. Look to when he missed the takedown badly and izzy went to capitalize? He immediately went on the offence again and stopped Izzys momentum immediately. I've not seen ANY other fighter do that to Izzy, it tells us Dricus has great fight IQ even if it doesn't "look good".
The way he just puts everything into takedowns without worrying about efficient movement or clean technique is interesting. It means his opponents can defend properly but still usually get dragged down or held in position. Downside is that he gasses from it.
I did Kyokusin for a dozen years and played rugby almost as many. The respect one has for one's opponents cannot be replicated in any other way than full contact. It builds nice people and better relationships accross bridges.
Have to disagree with you guys about izzys reaction post fight: its exactly like his demeanor after getting beat by Alex pereira. He took it well and people jumped to the exact conclusions you guys did here.
Does Dricus wear corrective lenses? He fights like Gaethje before he got his eyes fixed. That hook and overand he fires without looking is a pretty good tell that his vision may be fucked too.
South African elite sportsmen are sincerely good sports and show respect to their opponents....win or lose. DDP is a true Sout African warrior who shows the utmost respect after doing the deed. You UFC commentators and supporters will get to know what the South African sportsmen are all about in due coarse..... humble and respectful people.
If you even doubt that the jacket exchange and friendliness after his win from DDP was sincere, then you've obviously never been to South Africa or genuinely know a South African. There is a reason why tourist are always blown away by the hospitality. South Africans are super friendly and sincere. That was definitely not for show.
I genuinely think the fact that he is an actual African fighter matters. Not specifically because of Africa but because he lives and trains in a place with people who aren't entrenched in the common stale MMA camps/communities. He is isolated from what everyone else is doing and it clearly results in a style that everyone else doesnt know how to handle because of their weakness not him being wrong
People are still looking on the surface !!! He's 8/0 in the UFC , and that might be why his not so clinical and technically 100 % but how many people know he is a K1 kickboxing Champion 33 wins 30 KO's 0 loses . His a Two division EFC WORLD CHAMPION , and now a UFC MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION . With one title defense against arguably the best previous middle weight . He's still evolving and will just get better !!!! Izzy and Coner McGregor is at the same place mentally . They are on a down ward spiral , they are not at 100 % level . They still able to on a good day win a fight , after there first losses after being champions it's a mental warfare with themselves , I'm I still good enough I'm I still capable . The fight in the dog is fading , I think McGregor is scared shit liss of losing again because that would be the final nail in the coffin .
I heard a guy say Dricus is the MMA version of Rocky Marciano... awkward, hard-hitting, incredible resilience and will to win. I kind of like the comparison, except that Marciano was famous for his cardio, heh.
Stop with cardio. DDP’s cardio is excellent. You are not taking into account his explosiveness, size or the high pace/demand of his style. His cardio held up vs Strickland for five rounds. That says it all.
Rugby tackles are designed to take people down brutaly, bend them, push them back. Those body tackle downs are rugby physicality 101, clear as day to any rugby fan.... And they are clinical and efficient for damn sure, cornerstone of the sport and turn defence into bone crunching attack🤣
17:25 Luke you dont have servants if youre poor, period. Was Izzy rich growing up ? likely not. But he wasnt dirt poor. His servants were poor. Anyways it doesnt matter if he had servants or not, what matters is that he lied about his past and tried to make it seem like he was super poor when he wasnt. And he also went on dricus about "his ancestors owning slaves" when Izzys Yoruba tribe used to sell slaves in the transatlantic slave trade. It was just so many lies and slander.
As South Africans, we fight hard and then we shake hands, its seldom that you find there are grudges. BUT then again, we cannot wait until the next fight. You will see this in our national sport of rugby. Go check it out!!!
Sure, servants are more common in 3rd world countries, but that isn't the point. If you have servants, even in those countries, you are not struggling like someone that grew up in a favela or like Ngannou's background. The servants have more in common with that background than Izzy does. That is the point. If you have servants, even in those countries, you are doing well. Servants are not so common that every working class family has them. What percentage of families do you think have servants in those countries? None of this would even matter to anyone if Izzy didn't try to lump himself in with other fighters who have had extremely harsh pasts. No one cares if a fighter had servants. They only care when you claim to have had an economically tough childhood when you had servants.
As a Saffa. we have a saying... You don't what we know! Dricus is real the UFC will get to know what South African means. We never stop and never give up. The respect to opponent is part of our ethos.
yes. Well maybe except the wrestling and takedowns, he does it in a very opportunistic way like his timing is insanely good but the technique is very odd and unorthodox. But who cares? Ben askrens wrestling was mega unusual and everyone loved it.
@@Monscent he tackles guys just like a rugby player, all about stopping motion and dragging to the floor. Unorthodox, but very effective and adjustable
I think Ddp being able to get away with running the red light and driving recklessly is more of a commentary on three so called “world class fighters”. It really highlights their lack of great countering skills and trust in their own style. Cos they all literally get out the way and don’t attempt to counter
NZ and SA has a 100+ year fierce rugby rivalry. They exchange jerseys after matches and drink beer in the locker room afterwards. Izzy is a NZ. The Sprinboks beat Australia the night before in a test match. Quite fitting to exchange a sport item. What does stand out is Izzy's mom showing gratitude & respect to DDPs parents for raising a warrior. This is a very African thing to do.
You are describing a rugby tackle. Wrap the legs up, they can't run anymore. He even attempted a heel tap at one point. Not strange if you watch either of the rugby codes. The Whittaker fight tells you everything. He's paying attention during the fight and is able to act on what he's seeing. Whittaker was getting his rhythm, his timing, he was starting to get a read on Dricus... we finish with Rob being read, perfectly, by Dricus, being wobbled by a fierce jab and then run down into the finish. Everything in the middle, the phases of the fight, show how it was done. Understanding what was happening, what to do, and then able to deliver on it. His timing is quite impeccable, especially when judging what his opponent is doing.
I know right. Any Springbok fan knows a rugby tackle when they see one, brutality of our rugby, we tackle to knock the opponent down, knock them back, make them feel it. Absolutely classic seeing it in the ring from DDP. The Saffa tackle designed to exhaust the enemy, drain them, hurt, until they cant take it anymore, the wild dog as Rassie said in 2023

I have a feeling that DDP's style is gonna unravel and crumble at the first moment his "technique that works for him" gets cracked.
